HURST, Elijah S., practical surveyor; born in McNairy Co., Tenn., Dec. 13, 1855; Irish descent; son of David and Elizabeth (CARPENTER); father’s occupation, farmer; received common school education; taught school in Chester and McNairy Cos. from 1874 to 1888; married Mary E. MUSE, Dec. 14, 1876; Democrat; three times elected justice of the peace in Twelfth District; appointed census enumerator, 1900-1910; has served as deputy sheriff, county surveyor and deputy trustee for a number of years, and practiced law in J. P. Courts fifteen years; interested in farming, etc.; lay-member of Primitive Baptist church.
