CLAY, Thomas Eakin, educator, born in Shelbyville, Tenn., May 21, 1855; Scotch-Irish descent; son of Silas Webb and Ellen (Nevins) CLAY; received common school education Athens, Ala., and graduated in academic course from Edgefield Male Academy June 15, 1879; in early life engaged in farming, later became a school teacher; in 1885 elected principal of Robertson Academy, Davidson Co., then the oldest school in Tenn.; has been engaged in educational work for thirty-one years, is at present Superintendent of Public Schools for the City of Franklin, Tenn.; has real estate interests in Nashville; married Lula RIGGAN Feb. 5, 1891; member of I. O. O. O. F.; Democrat (Independent); member M. E. church, South.
