Obituary of J. A. Highfill
James A. Highfill was born in North Carolina July 27th 1827, and was
stricken with Paralysis at his home in Weakley County, Tenn, Jan. 18th,
1885 which terminated his life two days later. He was married to
Miss B. L. Edwards in the year 1849 and was baptized into the Baptist
church at Cottage Grove, Henry County, Tenn. in 1850. He was
twice married, but both wives preceded him to the better land.
He afterwards moved near Thompson Creek church near Como, Henry County,
Tenn, and united with the body worshiping at that place and was
ordained to the office of Deacon by J. W. Bell. A pillar of the
church a burden bearer who was ever ready to respond to the call of
duty, and eminently useful and beloved brother has been taken from the
church. one who was a true friend to the cause of Christ. In our
visits to his home we never found him too busy to talk with us on
religious matters. He loved to tell to the church his Christain
experience. He was a friend to all faithful ministers of the
gospel. His support to his pastor was shure to come. He was
a friend to the poor and an affectionate father. But he has been
taken from this world of sin and sorrow to that blessed repose reserved
for the heir of glory and has left us sorrowing but not as for those
who have no hope. Long may we cherish in memory's sacred urn the
bright example of kindness he has left us. May the God of heaven
who has ? ? (meted out??) to the children this cup of
bitterness give them that Christain resignation that will calm their
sorrow and trouble and shed a ray of comfort o'er the vale of their
pilgrimage to sweeten the cup of their affliction and may he throw his
arm around the little grandchildren. He leaves three children and
a host of friends to mourn his loss. Goodbye brother for a little
while and only a little while by the abounding grace of Christ- we hope
to soon to meet again.
Done in conference Saturday before the 2d Lords day in May 1885.
