Sgt. Dustin Daniel Laird, 24, of Martin, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006, while serving on active duty in Iraq for the United States Army. Funeral services for Sgt. Laird were held Saturday, August 12, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at Westview High School in Martin. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Full military honors were provided by the United States Army. Rev. Ed Eubanks officiated the services.

 Sgt. Laird was serving in the United States Army. He was a member of Daystar Bible Church. He graduated in 2001 from Westview High School and was deployed with his unit last September, but returned home in May for his brother Derek's graduation from Westview. During his leave, he visited with students at Caroline Coleman's fourth-grade class at Ridgemont Elementary School in Obion County.

Sgt. Laird was born March 24, 1982 in Martin. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Billie Finley Laird, and Ester Popoff McWherter.

Sgt. Laird is survived by his father, Billy Laird of Martin; his mother, Linda McWherter Lutz of Union City; his fiancé, Nicole Davidson of Martin; two brothers, Billy Joe Laird of Union City, and Derek Laird of Martin; a sister, Heather Hale of Union City; maternal grandfather, James McWherter of Dresden; and paternal grandfather, Arlee Laird of Paris.

Sgt Dustin D. Laird of Martin, Tenn., 23, was assigned to 913th Engineer Company, 46th Engineer Battalion, Tennessee Army National Guard, Union City, Tenn. He is a Honor Roll Soldier, his name is listed on the Weakley County War Memorial at Dresden, Tn.
