{"id":2502,"date":"2020-10-04T07:28:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-04T12:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/weakley\/?p=2502"},"modified":"2020-10-04T07:28:48","modified_gmt":"2020-10-04T12:28:48","slug":"southernosity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/weakley\/southernosity\/","title":{"rendered":"SOUTHERNOSITY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Every Southerner Knows &#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\" border=\"0\" width=\"80%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\"><caption>\u00a0<\/caption>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><b><\/b>\u00a0 <br \/>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Only a Southerner knows the difference between a hissie fit and a conniption and that you don&#8217;t &#8220;HAVE&#8221; them, but &#8220;PITCH&#8221; them.<\/b>\n<p><b>\u00a0Only a Southerner knows how many fish, collard greens, turnip greens, peas, beans, etc. make up a MESS.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0Only a Southerner can show or point out to you the general direction of &#8220;YONDER.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0Only a Southerner knows exactly how long &#8220;DIRECTLY&#8221; is &#8211; as in &#8220;Going to town, be back directly.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Even Southern babies know that &#8220;GIMME SOME SUGAR&#8221; is not a request for the white, granular sweet substance that sits in a pretty little bowl in the middle of the table.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0All Southerners know exactly when &#8220;BY AND BY&#8221; is. They might not use the term, but they know the concept well.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Only a Southerner know instinctively that the best gesture of solace for a neighbor who&#8217;s got trouble is a plate of hot FRIED CHICKEN and a big bowl of cold POTATO SALAD. If the neighbors trouble is a real crisis, they also know to add a large BANANA PUDDIN.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Only Southerners grow up knowing the difference between &#8220;RIGHT NEAR&#8221; and &#8220;A RIGHT FAR APIECE.&#8221; They know that &#8220;JUST DOWN THE ROAD&#8221; can be 1 mile or 20.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Only a Southerner both knows and understands the differences between a REDNECK,\u00a0 a\u00a0 GOOD OL&#8217; BOY, and PO&#8217; WHITE TRASH.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>No true Southerner would ever assume that the car with the flashing turn signal is actually going to make a turn.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Only a Southerner knows that &#8220;FIXIN&#8221; can be used both as a noun, verb and adverb.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0True Southerners make friends standing in lines. We don&#8217;t do &#8220;queues,&#8221; we do &#8220;lines.&#8221; <span style=\"color: #990000;\">And when we&#8217;re in line, we talk to everybody.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #990000;\">Put 100 Southerners in a room and half of them will discover they&#8217;re related, if only by marriage.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>True Southerners never refer to one person as &#8220;ya&#8217;ll.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>True Southerners know grits come from corn and how to eat them.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Every true Southerner knows tomatoes with eggs, bacon, grits and coffee are perfectly wonderful; that redeye gravy is also a breakfast food; that fried green tomatoes are not breakfast food.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>When you hear someone say, &#8220;WELL, I CALLED MYSELF LOOKIN&#8217;,&#8221; you know you&#8217;re in the presence of a genuine Southerner.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Only true Southerners say &#8220;SWEET TEA&#8221; and &#8220;SWEET MILK.&#8221; Sweet tea indicates the need for sugar and lots of it &#8211; we do not like our tea unsweetened; &#8220;sweet milk&#8221; means you don&#8217;t want buttermilk.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>And a true Southerner knows you don&#8217;t scream obscenities at little old ladies who drive 30 on the freeway &#8211; you say, &#8220;BLESS HER HEART &#8221; and go your way.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>And there&#8217;s the ole time favorite of &#8220;goin&#8221; back home to see &#8220;mommernem&#8221; for some &#8220;DOWN HOME COOKIN'&#8221;.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><b>To those of you who&#8217;re still a little embarrassed by your Southerness: Take two tent revivals and a dose of sausage gravy and call me in the morning.
