Somewhere between Oak Grove and Whitten’s Crossroads is a small cemetery which according to Mrs. Virgie Whitten Rich was located on the side of the old road. It is possible that these graves are those of
Thornton, Josiah 22 Aug 1758-c/1848, Rev. Soldier from South Carolina and his wife Thornton, Sarah 1 Mar 1765-October 1849.
Josiah owned land in this area and died in Wayne County as did his wife. Her death is recorded on the 1850 Mortality Schedule, 1850 U. S. Census for Wayne County. Information by Edgar D. Byler, III and Nellie Berry.
