According to testimony given by Mrs. Harmon (Hiram) Lakey in Chancery Court case #1086 entitled, “Lonnie Tilley, et. al. vs., The Tenn. Valley Iron and R.R. Company”. Mr. J.W. Darnell, “a Bushwacker” was found dead one morning at the Lakey gate on the old Waynesboro-Florence Road. Because they feared retribution from other bushwackers they buried Mr. Darnell on the south side of the road. His date of death was 1864-5.
