Treadwell, Tandy W.

Tandy W. TreadwellTREADWELL, Tandy W., was born in Wayne County, Tennessee on 14 December 1896. He was the son of John V. Wright TREADWELL and Elyza Jane SHARP TREADWELL. After his father passed away when he was only a young boy, Tandy worked cutting timber on Ike COPELAND’s farm to help support his mother and children. He had one brother, Grady TREADWELL, and nine sisters: Callie, who passed away at age 2 years; Pina FRALEY, Martha CHRISTIAN, Daisy POPE, Dell RILEY, Izora KEETON, Mary HASSELL LOYD, Lillian VICKERY and Johnnie HOLLIS. Izora KEETON, Waynesboro, passed away this past August [1992]

Three surviving sisters still live in Tennessee: Dell RILEY, Nashville; and Lillian VICKERY and Johnnie HOLLIS in Waynesboro.

In August 1918, Tandy volunteered for the United States Navel Reserve. He was called to active duty two weeks later and was immediately shipped west to Balboa Park Training Station, San Diego, CA. In 1920, at the end of World War I, he returned home for inactive duty for the remainder of his term.

In 1921 he attended Central Barber College, Nashville, Tennessee and was a barber in Waynesboro and in Sheffield, Alabama. He later moved to Miami, Florida where he worked in construction and then for Florida East Coast Railway for 38 years before retiring.

He met Wilton Inez POPE at a church dinner on the ground while he was on vacation in Waynesboro. They had a long distance relationship through letters and vacations. On 22 September 1929, they were married in Mount Hope Methodist Church. After honeymooning at Lookout Mountain, they returned to Miami, Florida. They were both very proud of their three children, Dr. Tandy Walter TREADWELL, Jr. of Macon, GA; Helen TREADWELL SHAW of Miami, FL; and John Reginald TREADWELL of Austin, TX. Tandy now has 14 grandchildren.

His beloved wife, Wilton, passed away 5 July 1990 and now rests at Mount Hope Methodist Church Cemetery.

Tandy TREADWELL served as Fireman, 3rd Class, USN, serial number 104,55-71.
