1836 Tax Lists of Wayne County

This tax list was taken under the directions of the Tennessee Legislature for the purpose of redistricting the counties of Tennessee. Under the provisions of the 1834 Tennessee State Constitution, the old Militia Districts were abolished for the purpose of representation on the County Court. The old Militia Districts were succeeded by the Civil Districts which were required under the 1834 State Constitution. The 1836 Tax List was used to initially establish the Civil Districts and the subsequent 1838 Tax List was used to either confirm the established district boundaries or require their change based on the population. Copies of both the 1836 and 1838 Tax Lists were to be sent to the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office as required by law.

Under the 1834 State Constitution, Wayne County was divided into twelve civil Districts (See the 1836 Civil District Map). The 1838 Tax List confirmed the 1836 Civil District Boundaries which continued in use with only minor modifications until after the 1850 Federal census.

The listing of the 1836 Tax List is generally alphabetical by Civil District. Please use the District links below to proceed to a specific district.
