Information used with the permission of Lorraine Bennett Rae.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">From volume 2, page 277 \u2013 WCCL<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">\u00a0\u201cKENNEDY \u2013 2 miles Southwest of Jonesboro.\u00a0 Established in the 1770\u2019s by the CHESTER and KENNEDY families.\u00a0 This cemetery was used for both white and Negroes.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Although the actual burial location has not been located and no tombstones have been found, it is believed that this reference is made to the Judge John Kennedy farm.\u00a0 John Kennedy was married to Katherine Greer.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Some mystery still surrounds this entry.\u00a0 Several sources have been reviewed and no conclusive proof of a burial ground has been found.\u00a0 A physical walkdown of the property yielded a patch of \u201cEaster flowers\u201d located on a high spot, behind where the old house had stood.\u00a0 No significant depressions were found.\u00a0 No further scientific study has been done.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">John Kennedy had purchased approximately 175 acres from William P. Chester in 1829 (Deed Book 18, Page 300).\u00a0 A thorough study of deeds and wills has not been done, however, it is known that Thomas Ruston Kennedy (son of the judge) and his wife, Harriet Hargrove Emack Kennedy, were living at this location.\u00a0 Harriet survived her husband, living into the 1870\u2019s.\u00a0 One of their children, Margaret Bowie Kennedy married William Madison \u201cMatt\u201d Gresham.\u00a0 The property became known as Matt Gresham\u2019s.\u00a0 In 1904, the property, which was about 275 acres at that time, passed (Deed Book 85, Page 291) to F.B. Vines and then again in 1911 (Deed Book 107, Page 178) to Abe &amp; Martha Rosenbaum.\u00a0 It currently remains in the Rosenbaum family.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Another child of Judge John Kennedy and his wife Katherine, was Rebecca Greer Kennedy, who married John Patton Chester, son of William P. Chester. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">It is clear that the Kennedy family and the Chester family had many connections, both familial and business.\u00a0 Much is known and written in other sources about these two families and will not be repeated here. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">LOCATION \u2013\u00a0 Southeast of the apartment complex at 183 Old State Route 34 and located within the boundaries of Washington County tax parcel 059-234.00 up near the highest elevation.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10193\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/records-data\/cemeteries\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee-h-i-j-k\/kennedy-cemetery\/kennedy-view-001-1b-unconfirmed\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10193\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10193\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10193\" src=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-View-001-1B-Unconfirmed-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-View-001-1B-Unconfirmed-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-View-001-1B-Unconfirmed-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-View-001-1B-Unconfirmed-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-View-001-1B-Unconfirmed.jpg 1504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennedy Cemetery<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">GPS: Location is about 36.276250, -82.484590\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Although the house is gone, remains of bricks and limestone foundation rocks are still present.\u00a0 The flowers previously mentioned are about 50 to 75 feet south of the house location.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">DEEDS \u2013 Deeds reviewed were silent on any existence of a burial ground.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">BURIALS \u2013 No confirmed names have been found.\u00a0 All that is known is the Bennett entry above.\u00a0 It is not known who supplied that information to Mr. Bennett, however, it was compiled during the Works Progress Administration enumerations of county burial grounds in the late 1930\u2019s.\u00a0 These families were rather prominent and some have been found buried at Old Jonesborough Cemetery (Rocky Hill).\u00a0 It is not logical that family members would have been buried, unmarked, on the farm, but it is possible.\u00a0 Perhaps stillborns\/infants\/children, as well as slaves could be those buried there.\u00a0 It is known that the Kennedys owned several slaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10195\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/records-data\/cemeteries\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee-h-i-j-k\/kennedy-cemetery\/kennedy-bets-001-1-slave-of-mrs-thos-r-kennedy\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10195\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10195\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10195\" src=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-Bets-001-1-Slave-of-Mrs-Thos-R-Kennedy-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-Bets-001-1-Slave-of-Mrs-Thos-R-Kennedy-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-Bets-001-1-Slave-of-Mrs-Thos-R-Kennedy-768x1373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-Bets-001-1-Slave-of-Mrs-Thos-R-Kennedy-573x1024.jpg 573w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kennedy-Bets-001-1-Slave-of-Mrs-Thos-R-Kennedy.jpg 881w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bets Kennedy, personal slave of Mrs. Thomas Rustin Kennedy.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">If any reader has more information on this burial ground, please contact the Cemetery Survey Team or the Heritage Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\">Researched, surveyed, transcribed, and donated to the Washington County TNGen Web March 2017 by Gordon M.
