Information was obtained from an article written by J.M. Boyd, Sr. which appeared in the Johnson City Press-Chronicle of April 16, 1939, and is a sketch of the JONES family that came from Botetourt County, Va. In 1770 and says: Later John Jones Jr moved to Meadow Brook in the edge of Washington County, Tenn. He died there about 1850 and lies buried in the old Elsea cemetery. John Jones Junior’s wife was a widow, Jane (?) Headrick.”

Many deeds have been reviewed and several individuals have been interviewed during the search for this burial ground with no conclusive results. John and Jane Jones appeared in the 1850 census enumerated with Fords, Coxes, Douglases and specifically between Levi Wallace and Elisha Smith. Based upon deed research, it does not appear that the Elsea’s were in the Meadowbrook area until about 1859. The Elsea’s were in the Sinking Creek area prior to that.

A couple possible theories –
What is currently known as the Henry Martin Walker burial ground was on property that was owned by Thomas Elsea (1807 – Deed Book 10, Page 140). This is Sinking Creek, not Meadowbrook, however.

There is a Jones Cemetery just over the county line from Meadowbrook, however this is in Sullivan County. John Jones’ father was buried on his farm, which was also located in Sullivan County (see the Jones Cemetery – Snapps Ferry Road entry under Sullivan County at https://tngenweb.org/sullivan/jones-cemetery-snapps-ferry-road/ and the Hargis-Jones Cemetery entry at https://tngenweb.org/sullivan/hargis-jones-cemetery/ ).

No conclusive evidence has been found to substantiate either of the theories. They are simply presented as outside possibilities. Unless and until additional information is found, John Jones, Jr. may be lost to time.

Researched, surveyed, transcribed, and donated to the Washington County TNGen Web August 2015 by Gordon M.
