Information used with the permission of Lorraine Bennett Rae.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">From volume 1, page 130 \u2013 entry 36 \u2013 shown as Tipton Cemetery<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><em>\u201cLocated on property included in the Heritage Park Trailer subdivision off State Highway 23, near the Washington-Carter County line.\u00a0 The plot is surrounded by an eight foot chain link fence.\u00a0 The area contains quite a bit of underbrush and garbage.\u00a0 There were 12 graves, 8 marked with fieldstones and 4 unmarked.\u00a0 There were no inscriptions.\u00a0 Information sources state that a CRAWFORD is supposed to be buried here, as is Abraham TIPTON.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">During a thorough review of several deeds and also some death certificates (DC), it has been determined that the actual name of this burial ground would be the Isaac Vaught Cemetery.\u00a0 This burial ground has been shown to be a burial ground of color, primarily confirmed by deed review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">An unproven reference to the \u201cCole\u201d burial ground is discussed in the BURIALS section below.\u00a0 If that connection is correct, this subject burial ground could date earlier than when Alice Vaught died in 1929.\u00a0 The \u201cVaught Cemetery\u201d name will be used, as it is what was proven through the deed trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">It is believed, but undocumented, that Abraham Tipton most likely would have been buried with other Tiptons at the Tipton-Haynes location.\u00a0 That burial ground is approximately \u00bd mile directly west of the Vaught Cemetery on Arroyo Drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The Crawford, also undocumented, may have been a referral to Nancy Crawford or another Crawford family member who had been buried at the Henson Hunt Cemetery.\u00a0 Those buried at Henson Hunt were moved to Snyder\u2019s during the I-26 highway project.\u00a0 The Henson Hunt burial ground was just several hundred feet east of Vaught.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Those buried at the Vaught Cemetery were moved to West Lawn and buried there on the east side of what is now defined as section C during the I-26 highway project.\u00a0 A couple of those were identified and marked with named granite markers.\u00a0 The others are unmarked.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9781\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/records-data\/cemeteries\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee-u-v-w-x-y-z\/vaught-isaac-cemetery\/3-vaught-view-003-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9781\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9781\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9781\" src=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/3-Vaught-View-003-1-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"Vaught (Isaac) Cemetery 2015\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/3-Vaught-View-003-1-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/3-Vaught-View-003-1-768x388.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/3-Vaught-View-003-1-1024x518.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/3-Vaught-View-003-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vaught (Isaac) Cemetery<br \/>2015<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>LOCATION<\/strong> \u2013 Within the I-26 right of way, just southwest of Vance Drive in Johnson City, Tennessee.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">GPS Location: +36\u00b0 17.810, -82\u00b0 19.635 (approximate)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>DEEDS<\/strong> \u2013 Both Carter County and Washington County deeds were reviewed.\u00a0 The Washington\/Carter boundary was changed and recording was done in both counties.\u00a0 All these deeds reviewed together, not all mentioning a burial ground, go to establishing location, Isaac Vaught\u2019s ownership, and his establishment of the burial ground.\u00a0\u00a0 Washington County deed at Deed Book 610, Page 142 is probably the most informative, and would lead the researcher through the sequence of the other deeds mentioned below.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Carter County \u2013<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deed Book, 24, Page 338 (1908) \u2013 Robert C &amp; Martha Cole to J. W. Wagoner \u201c\u2026..lots 5, 6, &amp; 7 of the Range land\u2026..\u201d\u00a0 This deed needs to be read with Washington County record in Deed Book 293, Page102.\u00a0 Isaac Vaught and J. W. Wagoner shared \u00bd interests in this 9 acre parcel.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Several other deeds were reviewed and plotted.\u00a0 These helped to locate the property but did not directly mention a burial ground.\u00a0 Deed Book, 72, Page 520; Deed Book 68, Page 511; Deed Book 116, Page 223; Deed Book 129, Page 272; Deed Book 144, Page 376; Deed Book 149, Page 449; and Deed Book 150, Page 239.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Washington County \u2013<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deed Book 293, Page 102 (1951) \u2013 Isaac Vaught to N.E. &amp; W.M. Clark.\u00a0 Mentions \u201c\u2026..cemetery located on this tract and owned by Vendee and where his wife is buried\u2026..\u201d.\u00a0 The parcel is described as \u201c\u2026..lots 5, 6, &amp; 7 of the Range land\u2026..\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deed Book 431, Page 329 (1970) \u2013 Heirs of N.E. &amp; W.M. Clark to Harmony Homes.\u00a0 Mentions \u201c\u2026..graveyard 40 feet by 25 feet, together with a 12 foot right of way to same\u2026..\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deed Book 433, Pages 297 &amp; 300 (1970) \u2013 Harmony Homes to Heritage Park.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deed Book 435, Page 275 (1970) \u2013 Clerk and Master to Heritage \u2013 this vests the graveyard to Heritage in fee simple absolute.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Deed Book 610, Page 142 (1984) \u2013 This is a rather lengthy document that won\u2019t be completely presented here.\u00a0 It essentially is the condemnation of the burial ground.\u00a0 It established that the graveyard was vested in (defendant) Heritage Mobile Home Park.\u00a0 And then\u2026.. \u201c\u2026..It is ordered, adjudged, and decreed that&#8230;..vested in the Plaintiff, the State of Tennessee, its successors and assigns, in fee simple, forever.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It is within the body of this document (Page 153) that the burial ground was \u201c\u2026..used to bury persons of the Negro race therein\u2026..\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Also reviewed were Deed Book 432, Pages 613 &amp; 615 (1970) \u2013 Heirs of Isaac Vaught \u2013 partial interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>BURIALS \u2013<\/strong> <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Isaac Vaught\u2019s wife, Alice<\/strong> (TN Death Cert 16743 \u2013 died 31 May 1929 aged 71 years).\u00a0 DC states \u201cHome Cem\u201d, however Deed Book 293, Page 102 clarified this.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Isaac Vaught<\/strong> (TN Death Cert 55-19260 \u2013 born 26 August 1860 and died 8 August 1955).\u00a0 DC states \u201cVaught\u201d in cemetery block.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Five markers were found at West Lawn, known to have been moved from when the highway was built.\u00a0 These markers have the old location sequence noted in the upper left corner.\u00a0 Based upon current location and the West Lawn burial sequencing, it appears that these were moved about 1981. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Infant Girl Young<\/strong> #6 (W.L. C\/4\/11) \u2013 Is believed to be the child of Will Young and Ethel Cole.\u00a0 Ethel Cole was the daughter of Robert and Martha Cole (see Deed Book 24, Page 338 above).\u00a0 A death certificate was not found for a female, but one was found for a male (TN DC Wash Co 186).\u00a0 Born and died 10 November 1922.\u00a0 The cemetery is listed as \u201cCole\u201d.\u00a0 No proof has been found, however, based upon property ownership, this may represent the same subject burial ground.\u00a0 No other \u201cCole\u201d burial ground has been found.\u00a0 Robert Cole\u2019s sister, Dora Belle, was married to James Vaught.\u00a0 The connection between James Vaught and Isaac Vaught is unproven.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Ellek Pearson<\/strong> #7 (W.L. C\/4\/12) \u2013 Died 15 August 1916.\u00a0 Ellek, also known as Alexander A. Pearson.\u00a0 (TN DC Carter 171).\u00a0 Burial location is \u201cBuffalo\u201d.\u00a0 Another marker has been found on the Pearson farm, about 1 mile southeast with the same death date.\u00a0 Both locations could be considered \u201cBuffalo\u201d, in the general sense.\u00a0 It is unknown whether grave #7 at Vaught is that of Ellek\/Alex, or an unnamed person.\u00a0 No connection between Ellek\/Alex to the Coles\/Vaughts has been established.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Infant Boy Vaught #8<\/strong> (W.L. C\/4\/14) \u2013 No supporting death certificate has been found.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Lucille Gray #9 (W.L. C\/4\/15) \u2013 No supporting death certificate has been found.\u00a0 No familial connection has been established.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Carl Vaught #10<\/strong> (W.L. C\/4\/16) &#8211; No supporting death certificate has been found.\u00a0 Carl Vaught was a son of Isaac and Alice.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Markers #1 through #5 have not been located, nor even known to have existed.\u00a0 This does seem to indicate that at least 10 graves were moved.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\nResearched, surveyed, transcribed, and donated to the Washington County TNGen Web October 2015 by Gordon M.
