[Sherfey]<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">20 Aug 1848<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">31 Dec 1930<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-427 from cache -->\n<p><strong>Deed History \u2013<\/strong><br \/>\nThis property has remained in the Hodge family for many years \u2013 now in the 4th generation.\u00a0 In 1884 David Garst conveyed 40+ acres to James Hodge (Deed Book 51, Page 126).\u00a0 The tract was partitioned once, after James died.\u00a0 Two sons, William and Noah split the 40 acres into two tracts of approximately 20 acres each.\u00a0 Although a will and several deeds are involved due to the partition and several siblings signing off, those parcels remain intact today.\u00a0 The current property owner of this burial ground and surrounding acreage is James\u2019 great grandson, David Lynn Hodge.\u00a0 The old dwelling remains (moved rearward on the property several years ago), to make room for a new, modern brick structure now serving as the residence.\u00a0 The old, 2 story structure is the second home \u2013 the first being a log house, now gone.<br \/>\n<strong>Burials &#8211;<\/strong><br \/>\nA death certificate has been found for James Hodge (25 Nov 1848 \u2013 17 Aug 1927), which shows the place of burial as \u201cHodge Cemetery\u201d, taking place the next day after his death.\u00a0 His parents are shown as James Hodge and Mary Curtis.\u00a0 James is shown as \u201cmarried\u201d, although his wife, Martha E. Sherfey Hodge, was not named on that document.<br \/>\nIn the 1900 census, James and Martha Hodge (married 22 years) are shown as having lost 3 children.\u00a0 Given their ages, it would appear that those 3 children would have died before the 1894 \u201cestablished date\u201d, however, the property was owned by James and Martha from 1884 forward.<br \/>\nTwo markers were found, mostly covered in dirt, but in fine shape for restoration.<\/p>\n<p>Family tradition also accounts for two children, names unknown, nor the ages.\u00a0 It is unknown whether they were stillborn, infants, or youngsters.<br \/>\nNo other evidence of any more graves.<br \/>\n<strong>James Hodge Military Service<\/strong> \u2013<br \/>\nUnconfirmed information indicates that James was a Private in Company B, 4th Tennessee Infantry.<br \/>\nSurveyed, researched, transcribed and donated to the Washington County TNGen Web July 2015 by Gordon M.
