{"id":10224,"date":"2017-04-12T20:56:20","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T00:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/?page_id=10224"},"modified":"2017-04-12T21:00:33","modified_gmt":"2017-04-13T01:00:33","slug":"scalf-william-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/washington\/records-data\/cemeteries\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee\/cemeteries-of-washington-county-tennessee-r-s-t\/scalf-william-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"SCALF (WILLIAM) CEMETERY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">It is unknown whether the grave of William Scalf has been lost to time or whether his remains were moved, possibly to the Longmire-Kinnick Cemetery.\u00a0 William\u2019s wife, Mary Curtis Scalf has been found to be buried at Longmire.\u00a0 She has no marker, however, Tennessee death cert #385 dated 1923 so indicates.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> A recent physical walkdown and visits with a few neighbors failed to find any indication of a gravesite near the projected vicinity based upon deed calls.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> In William Scalf\u2019s will (signed June 29, 1894), he names Martin (W.M.) Lewis \u201c\u2026..whom I have raised from a child, as my own\u2026..\u201d.\u00a0 W. Martin Lewis\u2019 wife Isabel is buried at Longmire and her grave is marked.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> From Deed Book 77, Page 59 (1899) &#8211; Mary Scalf, W.M. Lewis, and Isabel Lewis to John A. Broyles \u2013 13.54 acres.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> \u201c\u2026..to a planted stone near the corner of the William Scalf burial plot.\u00a0 Thence\u2026..\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> <strong>GPS:<\/strong>\u00a0 36.347825, -82.371990 (approximate)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> <strong>LOCATION:<\/strong>\u00a0 Near the intersection of Princeton Lane and Keyes Lane, off Princeton Road in the Princeton Hills Addition to Johnson City.\u00a0 Exact location of gravesite has not been determined.\u00a0 This addition took place in the 1950\u2019s.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> <strong>DEEDS:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 47, Page 415 (1880) \u2013 Crumley Heirs to Henry H. Carr \u2013 150 acres<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 54, Page 328 (1887) \u2013 Henry H. Carr to William Scalf \u2013 51 Acres<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 77-59 (1899) \u2013 Mary Scalf, W.M., and Isabel Lewis to John A. Broyles.\u00a0 The grave was not reserved or excepted, however, it was noted in one of the calls.\u00a0 The same survey was used for several deeds.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Several deeds were reviewed and are listed here.\u00a0 Each utilizes the same call that mentions the grave.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 151, Page 99 (1922) and Deed Book 151, Page 120 (1922 re-recorded).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 187, Page 209 (1929) and 208 (1931).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 205, Page 499 (1939).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> The following deed appears to ignore the grave.\u00a0 Whether or not the remains were moved is unknown at this writing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> Deed Book 266, Page 224 (1952) \u2013 Edna Dooley to Bilt-Well Homes.\u00a0 This deed is quiet on the grave.\u00a0 Bilt-Well Homes recorded Plat Book 2, Page 130 \u2013 the Princeton Hills Addition, in 1952 and no notation of a grave was indicated.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> <strong>BURIALS:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\"> All that is presently known is the notation recorded in several deeds.\u00a0 No physical evidence has been found.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Researched, surveyed, transcribed, and donated to the Washington County TNGen Web April 2017 by Gordon M.
