Van   Buren   Gets
First   Newspaper

Reprint from the Official Public- ation of the Tennessee Press Association

The Middle Tennessee county of Van Buren now has its own newspaper - believed to be the first.
Scott M. Crutchfield, publisher of the North Grundy Star in neighboring Grundy County, produced Vol. 1, No. 1, May 8.
In his first issue of the six-column weekly, Crutchfield said he hoped to move the printing plant and "home" to Spencer, the county seat of Van Buren.

Wildcat Chocked to Death.

T.B. Bouldin, a Van Buren County timber worker, was attacked by a rabid wildcat while leaving his home Sunday, but with the aid of his son, chocked the beast to death.
The creature growled like a dog, then jumped from underbrush, stabing his fangs into Bouldin's right arm.  With his left hand he grabbed the cat around the neck and held it off until his son reached them.
Both are taking anti-rabies treat- ment after a state laboratory examin- ation indicated the animal was rabid.

Uranium Ore found
in Coffee County

One Coffee County farm has an almost unlimited store of uranium ore.  In the opinion of W.L. Hill, a prospector for the Tennessee Research Enterprises, of Decherd.
Hill told the Times that he had prospected over five counties in the Middle Tennessee area, using a professional type geiger counter, and that a deposit on the farm of G.M. Pearson in the Mount View community gave the strongest gama count which he had found.
The lode outcrops in high bluffs along a small creek which runs through the place.  Old residents of the section knew it as "Turning Lathe Hollow," and the little creek that runs down the hollow and over a 50-foot waterfall was called by the same name.  The deposit is near Duck River, in what is known as Sugar Camp.
Pearson bought the farm several years ago from R.D. Cribbs, and Hill discovered the uranium lode last week.  A long time worked in oil fields and mining regions in the West, Hill says that there are indications of other minerals in the locality.  He does not know how thick the vain is, nor how extensive, but indicated with a wave of his hand - "These hills are loaded with it."
He says that the counter now shows "15 to 20 on the dial," and that the count will get stronger as the lode is uncovered.  The outcroppings leach away and give weaker response on the counter.
"I fully believe that the deposit has commercial value." said Hill, "and we plan to contact the Atomic Energy commission at an early date.  If Uncle Sam wants uranium, we have it right here.
