BURRITT HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

     The Freshmen and Sophomores of Burritt College took a trip to the show at Sparta Wednesday night.  All report a good time.
     The eighth month exams are over and all are expecting the close of school in about four weeks.
     The first and second grades' pro- gram went over big Saturday night.
     Misses Magdaline Guy and Anna Lee Haston attended the funeral of Fred Shockley Tuesday afternoon.
     Miss Jodie Guy spent Sunday with Aline Keyt.
     Miss Katherine Hillis was the weekend guest of Helen Rich at Chalybeate, Tenn.


School Happenings

     All the elementary school rooms in Spencer have closed with the excep- tion of Mrs. Osma Lewis' room.

John W. Cole, 80,
     Dies at His Home

(Sparta Expositor)
     John W. Cole, 80, died at his home, after an illness of several months, Monday, May 4, and was buried at Lost Creek Cemetery on Wednesday, May 6.
     Funeral services were held at the Lost Creek Methodist Church of which he was a member, conducted by the Rev Bleming of Doyle, in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives.
     Mr. Cole had many friends and was loved by everyone.  He was a devoted husband and father.  He owned one of the largest farms in his community and was a very successful farmer and one of the eldest citizens of White County, having lived here all his life.
     He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Beecher Wallace and Miss Elizabeth Cole of the Lost Creek community.  He had several brothers and sisters who live away from here... [illegible]

A DOUBLE WEDDING

     Two couples from Van Buren County were married in Roswell, Ga., Saturday, May 2.  Miss Audrey Hillis and Joe Lee Rascoe and Miss -ing sisters.  Mr. and Mrs. Rascoe were Jewel Hillis and Lloyd Shockley were joined in wedlock by a single ceremony.  Mr. and Mrs. Rascoe were two of Van Buren's popular teachers during the past school year.  The many friends of both couples wish for them much happiness in the future.
     The happy newly-weds spent the weekend in Chattanooga visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hodges.

Fred Shockley Shot 
    In Quarrel Over Dog

     A youth and a young man were being held at the White County Jail this week, charged with first degree murder in connection with the slaying at the youth's brother-in-laws on Sunday afternoon in the Big Bottom community, fourteen miles South of here. 
     The victim, Fred Shockley, 29, was instantly killed when he was shot through the heart at 5 o'clock with a .22 caliber pistol bullet.
     According to Sheriff Toy Taylor, Charles Dodson, 19, admitted firing the fatal shot, but blamed George Scott, 24, with starting the trouble.  Both Scott and Dodson are held at the jail charged with first degree murder.
     Dodson said he shot Shockley, his brother-in-law, in self-defense,  when...[illegible]
