SAFLEY, Charles Remus (1883-1966)Rites Wednesday For C.R. Safley, Former VB Judge
Charles Remus Safley, 83, retired Laurelburg community farmer and longtime Van Buren County judge, died at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday in Warren County General Hospital, following an illness of six weeks. Funeral services were held at High's Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday with John W. High and Rufe Higgins officiating and interment was in Crain Hill Cemetery. A native of Van Buren County, he was born March 6, 1883, and was the son of Lawson Safley and Jerusha Thomas Safley. He was married to the former Pearl Hillis, who died in 1956, and he was a member of the Church of Christ. Prior to his election as county judge, he served several terms as a member of the county court. He leaves two sons, Clarence E. (Red) Safley, of McMinnville, and Lawson Safley of Springfield; three grandsons, Milton Russell of Bone Cave, and Charles Safley and Mac Safley of Springfield, and two great-grandchildren.Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN. SAYLORS, Dempse Cordell (1909-2001)Dempse Cordell Saylors, 91, of Sparta passed away Friday, March 2, 2001. Saylors was born August 24, 1909, in White County, the son of Monrow and Hattie Hash Saylors. He was a teacher, mail carrier and farmer. He attended the Black Oak Church of God. Services were Sunday, March 4, 2001, in Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Saylors Cemetery. Glea Shelley and Howard Thomason officiated. Saylors was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Gertrude Saylors and Clara Hefner Elam. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Howard Saylors of Sparta; a son, Eugene H. Saylors and wife Rhonda of TX; three daughters, Linda Wilson and husband Gary of Chattanooga; Dinah Saylors of NY; Julia Ruby of IL; two brothers, Dillard Saylors of AL; Grady Saylors of Nashville; eight grandchildren, Gregg Wilson, Stephanie Wilson, Aaron Ruby, John Ruby, Brad Saylors, Melissa Saylors, Renee Saylors, Tracy Humphrey, John Humphrey, and a great-grandchild, Reagan Humphrey.

SCOTT, Arcie (1893 - 1980)
Arcie Scott, 86, died Sunday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Nashville following an illness of four days. A Warren County native and retired employee of the Van Buren County Highway Department, he was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a veteran of World War I and was the son of the late Joseph Prater and Flora Lee Martin Scott. His wife, Bettie Ann Hennessee Scott, died last Dec. 14. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Spencer Church of Christ with Bobby Wilhite and Andy McElroy to officiate. Burial will be at Spencer Town Cemetery. Betty Ann Scott, Spencer, died Friday night at Cedar Crest Senior Citizens Home, Calvert City, Ky., following an extended illness. She was 78 years old. A housewife and Van Buren County native, she was a member of the Church of Christ. She was the wife of Arcie Scott, who survives. Her parents were the late W.C. and Martha Ann Roberts Hennessee. Services were yesterday at Spencer Church of Christ with Bobby Wilhite and Andy McElroy officiating. Burial was at Spencer Town Cemetery. John Wesley Scott, 41, of McMinville passed away Sunday, October 14, 2001. Scott was born March 11, 1960, in Warren County, the son of Everette Scott and Barbara N. Scott. He was a nursery worker. Services were Tuesday, October 16, 2001, in the High Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery. George Roberts officiated. Mrs. Nancy Rowland Seamons, 91-year-old resident of Bone Cave, died following an illness of three weeks duration at McMinnville Nursing Home Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. A native of Van Buren County and a member of the Baptist Church, she was the widow of the late W.H. Seamons. She was a daughter of the late W.T. and Martha Hash Rowland. Survivors include a son, Nile Seamons, Bone Cave; three daughters, Mrs. Raleigh Patton, LaFayette, Ga., and Mrs. Mack Mullins and Mrs. L.E. Harris, both of McMinnville; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Neal, Rock Island, and Mrs. Emma Johnson, Bone Cave, as well as 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. SEAMONS, Thomas Bryant (1901-1953)
Bryant Seamons, Merchant, Dies, Rites Friday
Funeral services for Thomas Bryant Seamons, 52, retired merchant, were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the chapel of High Funeral Home. Rev. Bill A. Jordon, Bapitst minister of Chattanooga, and Stanley J. McInery, Minister of Westwood Church of Christ, officiated. Burial was in Mt. View cemetery. Mr. Seamons, a McMinnville merchant for six years, died at Faulkner Springs hospital Wednesday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock as a result of injuries received in a truck accident near his Bone Cave home on the previous Sunday. He suffered several broken ribs and a punctured lung in the accident. A native of Van Buren county, Mr. Seamons was born January 13, 1901. He was the son of W.H. Seamons and Nancy Rowland Seamons and was married December 31, 1922 to Miss Emma Gertrude Miller. She died September 24, 1950. Mr. Seamons was engaged in the grocery business on Rebel Hill here from 1941 to 1947, moving to Florida at that time where he opereated a motor court at St. Augustine until 1951. Returning here he had lived at Bone Cave since that time. Mr. Seamons was a member of the Baptist Church. He is survived by his parents; five daughters Mrs. G.H. O'Neal, Chattanooga, Mrs. Edwin Whitlock, Brunswick, Ga., Mrs. G.H. Partin, Misses Tommye and Patricia Seamons, St. Agustine, Fla.; one brother, Sam Seamons, Bone Cave, and three sisters, Mrs. R.M. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 14, from the chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with Fred Sharp and Joseph Smith officiating. Burial followed in Haston Cemetery in Van Buren County. She is survived by her husband, Tandy Powell Shockley, of Van Buren County; two sons, F.D. Shockley of Van Buren County and Montgomery Shockley of Huntsville, AL; three daughters, Faye Davis of Sparta, Juanita Adamson of McMinnville, and Flora Sherrell of Sparta; two brothers, Dave Haston of Sparta and George Haston of Texas; one sister, Vollie Moss of Lewisburg; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A native of Van Buren county, she was a daughter of Drew Spears and Lodema Yates Spears. Mrs. Shockley was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors include three brothers, G.G., R.C., and C.C. Aged Van Buren Farmer Passes
Gustavis Beauguard Shockley, 90-year-old retired Van Buren farmer, died at his home, near Reno bridge, Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Old Union Church in White County. Burial was in same. Mr. Shockley, native of Van Buren County, had been a prominent farmer of the Cummingsville Community for many years. He was born Mar. 12, 1869, the son of Thomas J. Shockley and Emiline Mitchell Shockley, and was married to Miss Avo Spears, who survives. Mr. Shockley is survived by his wife and several nieces and nephews. James M. Shockley, 92-year-old Van Buren resident, died at his home in the fourth district Friday afternoon at 4: 25 o'clock. He had been ill for a period of two weeks. Funeral rites were held at 2:30 o'clock at the Spencer Baptist Church. Rev. Reid Compton, the pastor officiated and burial was in Molloy cemetery. Born June 14, 1860, Mr. Shockley was a lifelong resident of Van Buren county. His parents were Wiley Shockley and Lucretia McCormic Shockley and he was married to Miss Carolyn Medley, who preceded hin in death. Mr. Shockley was a member of the Baptist church. Mrs. Mary Vida Shockley, long-time resident of Warren county died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Bruce Curtis on Route 6, Sunday after an illness of nine months. She was 87. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 4, at High's Chapel, with interment to be in the Crain Hill Cemetery. Houston Stiles and John W. High will officiate. Born in Warren county, Mrs. Shockley was the daughter of the late G.H. and Elizabeth Roberts Campen, also natives of the county. She was married to Tom J. Shockley, who preceded her in death, and was a member of the Church of Christ. The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Irving Hillis, of Bone Cave, Mrs. A.D. Boyd of Salino, Kansas, and Mrs. Curtis. She also leaves two sons, Parker Gillentine of Anderson, Ind., and Charlie Gillentine of Nashville and one sister, Mrs. Maggie Galloway of McMinnville. Leo Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late James Drew Baker and Gertrude Davis Baker and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Evans Simmons, and a son, Charles Simmons. She is survived by a daughter Vera Elizabeth Templeton of McMinnville; a son James L. Simmons of Blountville; a brother Augustus Baker of Pikeville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Polly Ann (Annie) Simmons, 65-year-old resident of Spencer, died of a lingering illness in Park View Hospital, Nashville, at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. A native of Van Buren County and member of the Church of God, she was married to Carroll Edward Simmons who preceded her in death April 30, 1981. She was a daughter of the late Reverdy Manus and of Mrs. Goldie Yates of Spencer. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son and three daughters, Carroll Lynn Simmons of Stanford, Fla., Mrs. Margaret Johnson of Old Hickory, Mrs. June Shapers of Leesburg, Fla., and Mrs. Carolyn Mooneyham of Spencer. Cooper Landis Sparkman of the Quebeck community of White county, died in a Murfreesboro hospital Tuesday, April 8, following an extended illness. He was 68. Mr. Sparkman, born in White county, October 11, 1894, was a son of Temple Sparkman and Permelia Hunter Sparkman and he was married to Miss Pearl Hill. She Survives. He attended the Springhill Baptist Church. Sparkman served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Abba Shrine Temple Greeters Unit. Dillard Steakley, 65-year-old resident of 114 Kirby Street, succumbed to a two-month illness in River Park Hospital noon Sunday. Retired from the quality control division of Century Electric, he was a World War II Army veteran and native of Van Buren County. A member of the Locust Street Church of God, he was a son of the late Will and Ola Gooch Steakley. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Jo Steakley, and daughter Mrs. Pat Stembridge of Florence, Ala. STEAKLEY, Fred Lancer (circa 1922-1967)
F.L. Steakley Fatally Shot on Wednesday
A McMinnville man was fatally shot Wednesday night at Pikeville, and a Bledsoe County man has been charged with murder as a result of the shooting. Dead is Fred Lancer Steakley, Sr., 45, a former resident of Spencer. Charged in the shooting is Thomas (Doc) Evitt, 35 of Pikeville. He is free on a $10,000 bond, and a preliminary hearing is set for December 2. Bledsoe County Sheriff Carlton Nipper said the shooting occurred at Evitt's home. Steakley was shot three times with a .25 caliber Colt pistol, and died shortly after being admitted to Bledsoe Memorial Hospital. Sheriff Nipper quoted Evitt as stating Steakley came to his house drinking and forced his way inside. He refused to leave and an argument developed, leading to the shooting. Sheriff Nipper and a deputy went to the Evitt home shortly after 8 o'clock Wednesday night after a neighbor had phoned to say there seemed to be a disturbance at the home. Steakley died at 8:30 o'clock, only a few minutes after being admitted to the hospital. The three shots struck Steakley's mid-section. Sheriff Nipper was quoted by a Chattanooga newspaper as stating Steakley was arrested a month or so ago when he was at the Evitt home drinking and causing a disturbance. Both Steakley and Evitt were employed at Pikeville Sportswear, Steakley as a foreman. Funeral services for Steakley were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Spencer Church of Christ, with burial following in the Spencer Town Cemetery. Bobby Wilhite officiated, and High's Inc. was in charge of arrangements. Steakley was born in Bledsoe County, but had lived in Van Buren County before moving to McMinnville. He made his home at 114 Virginia Street, here. The deceased was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Mary Russell Steakley; a son, Fred Lancer Steakley, Jr. and a daughter, Evelyn Gale Holder, all of McMinnville; also his father, John C. STEAKLEY, John C. (circa 1887-1969)John C. Steakley, 82-year-old Spencer resident, died of a lingering illness at White County Hospital on April 11, 1969. A son of the late William C. and Amanda Whittenburg Steakley, he was married to the former Mary Lou Sapp who survives. Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. John C. Steakley, Jr, Spencer, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at Spencer Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Saturday by Bobby Wilhite, burial following in the Town cemetery. High's, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Death Claims Mrs. Steakley; Rites Tuesday
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Romans Steakley, 81, widow of E.L. Steakley, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Quebeck Church of Christ with Rev. William H. Moss, pastor of the First Methodist Church of McMinnville, officiating. Burial was in Preston Heights cemetery at Quebeck. Mrs. Steakley died in Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville, Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock after an extended illness. The deceased, a native of Van Buren county, was born October 20, 1865. She was a daughter of Solomon Romans and Lydia Haley Romans. A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, her husband preceded her in death seven years ago. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. S.C. Patterson of Homerville, Ga., and Mrs.Pearl Earle of Nashville; seven sons, W.E. Steakley of Atlanta, Ga., J.M. and C.E. Steakley of Chattanooga, E.S. Steakley of Sanford, Fla., John Steakley of Sheffield, Ala., C.B. Steakley and C.C. Steakley of Nashville; three sisters, Mrs. J.C. STEAKLEY, Ola C. Gooch (circa 1890-1976)
Mrs. Ola C. Steakley, 86-year-old native of Huntsville, Ala., succumbed to a lingering illness at her Bone Cave residence at 3 a.m. Wednesday.
A member of the Church of God, she was the wife of Will Steakley, who preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1960, and was a daughter of the late William and Ada Whitworth Gooch.
Survivors include a daughter and five sons, Mrs. Hoyte Goff, Dillard Steakley, both of this city; Clarence and Carl Steakley, Bone Cave; herman Steakley, Route 1, Rock Island, and Charles Steakley, Manchester; two sisters, Mrs. X.E. Baucom, Huntsville, and Mrs. E.W. Fanning, East Point, GA., as well as 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grand children.

STRAGGS, Montie Ville (1931-2001)Montie Ville Straggs, 70, of Sparta passed away Sunday, June 18, 2001. Straggs was born February 18, 1931, in KY, the son of Jessie H. and Wanda Dee Johnson Skaggs. He was a factory worker and an army veteran. Services were Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Jack Collins and John Osborn officiated. Dibrell resident Mrs. Annie Louise Sullivan, 59, died of an extended illness in McMinnville Health Care Center at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. She was retired after 26 years as a cook at Centertown School. Betty Sue Sullivan, 41-year-old Spencer resident, died of a two day illness in Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville, at 11:15 a.m. Thursday. Employed by USA Enterprises, she was a Baptist and native of Van Buren County. She was a daughter of the late Titus Page Sullivan Sr. and Mrs. Cora Guy Sullivan of Spencer. Besides her mother, she is survived by sisters Marlin McCoy and Ella Jane Knowles of Spencer, half-sisters Lola Mitchell of Massachusetts, Vida Madewell, Katherine Simmons and Clata Ray Mooneyham of Spencer, brothers Larry, Ira Lee, Nathan and Wade Sullivan, half-brothers Jim, Chester and Joe Sullivan, all of Spencer, and Titus Lee Sullivan of Sparta. Route 1, Doyle resident and Spencer native Jack Morgan Sullivan, 84, died Aug. 21 at Sparta Health Care Center after an extended illness.
A retired employee of the Van BurenCounty Highway Department and a member of the Doyle Nazarene Church, he was the son of Sam and Myrtle Brymer Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife, Dovie Sullivan; three daughters, Lorene and Delma Brymer and Reba Phifer, all of Spencer; one son, Joe Sullivan of Walling; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Jim Emery Sullivan, 84, of Bone Cave, passed away Monday, May 9, 1999. Sullivan was born October 15, 1914, in Van Buren County to James Parker Sullivan and Vergie Brymer. He served as the sheriff of Van Buren County from 1960-1964.
Sullivan was preceded in death by one grandson, Bruce Steakley; five brothers, Brady, Adger, Floyd, J. P. and Elbert Sullivan; and one sister, Delma Gilbert. Survivors include his wife, Lyla Pack Sullivan of Bone Cave; two sons, Joe Sullivan and Burton Sullivan both of Sparta; seven daughters, Charlotte Rains, Jimmy Queen, Virgie Sullivan, Donna Kerr, Phyllis McCoy, and Sharon Moody all of Bone Cave and Bettye Hayes of Manchester; 22 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Austin P. Sullivan of Pikeville and John Sullivan and Leaton Sullivan both of Spencer; and one sister, Elvina Davis of Quebeck.

Retired lumberman Titus Page Sullivan Jr, 68-year-old resident of Hill Road, Spencer, died of a two year illness in East Ridge Friday. A native of Van Buren County and member of the Missionary Baptist Church, he was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by five sons and three daughters, Dexter and Billy of Massachusetts, Wayne of McMinnville, Arnold of Spencer and Jessie Sullivan of Chattanooga, Beverly Forsythe of Spencer and Betta Helms of Cookeville.
