PASSONS, Major
Major Passons
Major Passons was born in Virginia, Feb 17, 1796, and died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. B. Grissom, in Van Buren Co., Tenn., July 24, 1876. He married Anne Anderson, in White Co., Tenn., about 1816. He served under Gen. Jackson in the campaign against the Creek Indians and in the battle of Horseshoe Bend. From the best information the writer could obtain, Father Passons and his wife were both converted, and joined the Methodist Church in 1819. His wife died in 1866.
I suppose from the time he took upon him the vows of the Church until his death, his Christian character was never sullied. He was successful as a farmer, having secured by economy and industry a comfortable living. His house was open for the itinerant. He was fond of religious literature, and delighted in the songs of Zion.
The writer was with him a few times during his last illness, and always found him apparently patient and resigned to his severe afflictions. He was rendered helpless by a fall some time before his death. The writer heard him more than once exclaim, “O how thankful we should be that we are not permitted to look into the future – that God, in the morning of life and in the day of health and prosperity, does not permit us to behold the day of affliction, helplessness, and adversity!”
He leaves several children and grandchildren. Some of his own children are considerably advanced in life, and what is a little remarkable, none to them but an only daughter are members of any branch of the Church. O that the children would turn about and follow in the steps of their father, live as he lived and died as he died, with a glorious hope of heaven!

Aaron Payne, 93
Rock Island resident and Van Buren County native Aaron Payne, 93, died March 30 at Raintree Manor after a two-month illness. A farmer and a member of Harmony Church of Christ, he was the son of William Clayburn and Louzena Hillis Payne; and was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Payne. He is survived by his wife, Annie Pearl Mayfield Payne; two sons, Gerald C. and Ben A. Payne, both of Rock Island; one daughter, Joetta Payne of Rock Island; three grandchildren, two step-grand- children, and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at High's Chapel with Marion Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Crain Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County. PAYNE, Oata O'Brian (1865-1952)
Oata O'Brian Payne, 86, Campaign merchant for over a quarter of a century, died at his home Friday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock. He had been ill a year. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Campaign Church of Christ. Allen Phy, minister of Central Church of Christ, officiated and burial was in Fuston cemetery at Gath. Mr. Payne, native of Bardwell County, Kentucky, was born August 15, 1865. He was a son of Benjamin Payne and Amanda Paine Payne and he was married in 1895 to Miss Hallie Locke. She survives. For a number of years Mr. Payne was in the general mercantile business at Laurelburg in Van Buren County and he was also engaged in the insurance business there. He had been at Campaign for about twenty-five years where he operated a general store and took an active interest in the affairs of the community. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and the Masonic Lodge. Survivors, in addition to his wife, is one son, T.H. Payne, Atlanta, Ga.; one son, T. H. Payne, Atlanta, Ga., one daughter, Mrs. George F. Christenbery, Chattanooga; one brother, Ben Payne, Hazel Green, Ala., and a sister, Mrs. Fannie Cope, Tyler, Texas. Apr. 4, 1952, p. 8.[Contributor: Maxine Reggio, 2001]Campaign Community - Campaign Church of Christ was the scene Sunday afternoon of the funeral of our veteran merchant, church leader, and highly respected citizen, O. B. Payne, who passed away at his home here on Friday p.m., after a year of illness caused by a bad heart condition. Mr. Payne was 86 years of age, born in Kentucky in 1865, but spent the most of his life in Tennessee. He worked in the insurance business several years, but located at Bone Cave over thirty years ago and went into the mercantile business, moving here in the year of 1924 and continuing the same business. A few years after locating here he lost his home and store by fire. He rebuilt and went on until he thought best to go out of business and locate in Chattanooga with his children. He did not tarry with them long as Campaign and his former business beckoned and he returned to continue in business until the day of his death. He was known in the business world as O.B. Payne, to his friends as Odie, but his real name was Ota O'Brien Payne. Fifty-six years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Hallie Locke at the Locke home on Mountain Creek near Gath. To this union four children were born, two of whom survive, T.H. Payne and Mrs. George Christenbury, both of Atlanta, Ga. Two more dutiful children to their parents never lived and their mother, who is very badly crippled from arthritis will never want for the lack of care. A large crowd heard Bro. Phy of the Central Church in town pay a fitting tribute to our neighbor and many went on to the Fuston Cemetery at Gath for the interment. Our sympathy to Mrs. Payne, Thruman and Thelma and the grandchildren.

Quebeck resident and Sparta native David Franklin Phifer, Sr., 39, died Sept 8 at St. Thomas Hospital after an extended illness. A Vietnam veteran and an employee of Magnetek Century, he was the son of Doris L. Brogno Phifer of Quebeck and the late Emmett S. Phifer, Jr. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Judy Faye Rains Phifer; one daughter, Jelena Nichole McBride of Sparta; one son, David Franklin Phifer, Jr. of Quebeck; one sister, Dwana Frances Tanner of McMinnville; one brother Albert Louis Phifer of Florida; and one grandson, Bronson Shane McBride, Jr. of Sparta. McMinnville resident and White County native Harold Newton Phifer, 80, died Jan 10 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center after a three-day illness. A retired salesman and a member of the Baptist Church, he was the son of Magness Charles and Betty Hollingsworth Phifer and was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Reece, Benjamin Franklin and Claude Phifer. He is survived by two sons, Gordon Phifer of Florida and Charles Newton (Toby) Phifer of Indiana; three brothers, Merrill Eugene Phifer of Florida, Clarence Phifer of Doyle and M.C. Phifer of Michigan; one niece Merrilyn Pegg of Morrison; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived locally by a sister-in-law, Marietta Phifer. Graveside memorial services will be held Jan 18 at Greenwood Cemetery in White County with Alvin Pegg officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity. PHIFER, Roy Russell (circa 1911-1987)Ill for the past several months, former Van Buren County coroner Roy Russell Phifer, 76-year-old Spencer resident, died at 11 p.m. Monday in St.Thomas Hospital, Nashville. A native of White County and member of the Church of Christ, he was retired from the Van Buren County Highway Department. A son of the late Samuel C. and Alta Hollingsworth Phifer, he was married to the former Eunice Barnett who preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1980. He is survived by a son John WInston Phifer of Madison, two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. The body will be in state at High Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Services will be held in High's Chapel at 3 p.m. Thursday, interment to follow in Mt. View Cemetery.

POTTER, Auby Franklin (1933-1977)
Auby F. Potter, Jr. died Thursday, December 1, 1977 as a result of a gun shot wound in a hunting accident in George County, Mississippi. Auby, a retired Master Sargent from the United States Air Force of 20 years, had resided in George County, Mississippi, since 1972. Auby was a native of Spencer, Tennessee. He leaves to treasure his memory: wife: Goldye Lorraine Ferguson Potter; sons, Joseph Anthony (Tony) Potter, Jerry Randall (Randy) Potter, Auby Ellis Potter, and daughter Regina Luwana Potter all of Mississippi. Also, mother, Evelyn Potter, of Spencer, brothers, Tommy Potter, Alvie Potter of Spencer, Steve Potter of Kentucky; sisters, Ruth Rogers, June Chavez, Stella Butcher, Lisa Potter of Spencer, Gladys Armstrong of Indiana, Reba Simmons, Tracy City, Lois Grissom of Bone Cave, Charlotte Potter of Florida, Shirley Baker, McMinnville. Auby was preceeded in death by his father, Auby Franklin Potter, Sr. and his mother Mae (Jackie) Childs Potter. Auby was layed to rest on December 4, 1977 at Daisy Vestry Cemetery in the edge of Jackson County, Mississippi with full Military Honors. Auby was a veteran of the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict.

McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Versa Jane Powers, 88, died July 9 at NHC Healthcare after an extended illness. A homemaker, she was the daughter of A.E. Bidge and Nancy Ann Hillis Roberts; and was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Clinton Powers Sr. in 1967; one daughter, Juanita McBride; two sons, Oscar (Bud) Powers and Albert Clinton Powers Jr.; one grandson, David Powers; and one great-grandson, Richard Killian. PRESLEY, Arrie E. Mitchell Cummings (1892-1987)
Leaving 119 living descendants, 95-year-old Mrs. Arrie E. Cummings Presley succumbed to a four-month illness in McMinnville Health Care Center at 12:30 pm Saturday. A resident of Route 1, Spencer and native of White County, she was a member of the Spencer Church of God of Prophecy. A daughter of the late Crock and Susan Baker Mitchell, she was first married to Homer Cummings and later to Harlem
Presley who died in 1976. She is survived by five sons and two daughters, Arthur Cummings and Vascoe Presley of McMinnville, Beecher Cummings of Sparta, Clifford Cummings, J.D. Presley, Betty Johnson and Nannie Tase, all of Spencer, 36 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren. The body is in state at the church of her membership where Ricky Graves will conduct services at 10 am Tuesday. Interment will be in Spencer Town Cemetery. Mrs. Annie Martin Rains, wife of Crit Rains, Jacksboro farmer, died at Faulkner Springs hospital Friday morning at 11: 40 o'clock, following an illness of ten months. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Jacksboro Church of Christ with Rufus Higgins, minister of Chestnut Grove Church of Christ, and John W. High officiating. Burial was in the Jacksboro cemetery. Mrs. Rains, a native of Van Buren county, was born January 8, 1888. She was a daughter of Jesse Martin and Rachel Bouldin Martin and she was a member of the Church of Christ. RAY, David Robert (Bobby) (1945-1969)
Mr. and Mrs. David Ray, 204 Ridgecrest Drive, McMinnville were notified late Sunday of their son's death. HM2 Ray was reportedly killed when the Marine unit to which he was attached was over run on March 18. The body is to be returned to High's Inc., here, and is expected to arrive by this weekend. Arrangements will be announced by the funeral home. David Robert (Bobby) Ray, 24, Navy corpsman second class,
has become Warren county's sixth victim of the Vietnam campaign.Young Ray was serving at An Hoa, Vietnam, as a medic. While the information given the family was limited, a letter written by Tommy Vickers, a close friend of Ray's now serving as an operating room technician at Da Nang, states that Ray was killed while treating the wounded, but had continued to treat the more seriously injured until he was hit the second time. The second wound took his life. The letter below was received by Mr. and Mrs.Tom Vickers, Corpsman Vickers' parents, the day before the Rays were notified of their son's death by armed forces officials. It read, in part, as follows:
"I guess you know by now, Bob Ray got killed last night. They ran over AnHoa. This is the story I got from a Marine he patched up.
'They started when one got through the wire and pulled a satchel charge under a hutch. When it went off everyone ran outside. They started mowing them down as they ran out.'
Bob got hit, but was still treating wounded when he was hit the second time. I hope this isn't true, but this Marine said he and Bob were real close. We worked until 2:30 this morning, and then I got off. I was on second call. At 6:30 this morning six choppers came in from An Hoa, and I got called back. The first thing I did was go to triage and look for Bob. When I didn't see him, I started asking because most of them were from 15, Bob's outfit. Everyone said he had been hit, but no one knew how bad. Then this one kid told me what happened. I couldn't work. All I could do was sit and stare. He didn't come here that I can find out.
After his mother has calmed down, tell her this little Marine said Bob knew his job and he was doing it. He fixed my arm. Then he started to cry. He said, 'Gooks were all over them, plus rockets and mortars as thick as flies.' We had mass casualties last night. We caught a few rounds about 4:30. I don't think anyone got hurt. The choppers are coming in. Thank God, I'm off."A graduate of McMinnville high school, young Ray attended the University of Tennessee before volunteering for service in March of 1966. He was scheduled to come home in July on leave, but had already volunteered for six months additional duty in Vietnam. He planned to return to the battle zone immediately following his leave and a visit with his parents, friends and relatives here. Vickers arrived in Vietnam about a month ago, and he and Ray had planned to have a reunion in Vietnam as soon as their respective duties would permit. Vickers, like Ray, volunteered for service. Ray received his hospital training in San Diego and underwent field training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. In addition to his parents, Ray is survived by a sister, Mrs. Barry Lentz of Orlando, Fla.

RAY, Donnie Lee Molloy (circa 1913-1997)McMinnville resident and Spencer native Donnie Lee (Molloy) Ray, 84, died Jan. 17 at NHC Health Care after an extended illness. A retired employee of Magness Library and Grizzell's Jewelry and a member of Central Church of Christ, she was the daughter of James Logan and Elfleda (Lowery) Molloy. She was preceded in death by one son, Medal of Honor Recipient David R. (Bobby) Ray; three brothers, H.S., Emmit and Rayden Molloy; and two sisters, Lillian Roach and Louise Gross. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Don Bixby of Houston, Texas; one grandson, David Bryant Lentz of Houston, Texas; and six brothers, T.B. Molloy of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lynn Molloy of Signal Mountain, L.H. Molloy of Mississippi, H.L., Edward and Robert Molloy, all of McMinnville. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at High's Chapel with Jim Gammon officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. tonight at High's. Brady Roberts, 53, died Tuesday at his home in Pound,Virginia. He was a native and former resident of Spencer. Funeral Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Spencer Baptist Church. Rev. ROBINSON, David (1946-2001)David Robinson, 55, of Bloomington Springs, passed away Friday, April 27, 2001. Robinson was born April 3, 1946, in White County, to Bill and Mae Robinson. He was a member of Union Hill Church of Christ in Jackson County. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era and was a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 741. Robinson was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Robinson and Hebron Robinson. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Birdwell Robinson of Bloomington Springs; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dwayne and Tammy Robinson of Gainesboro, Randy and Lauri Robinson and Phillip and Dana Robinson all of Bloomington Springs; parents, "Preacher" Bill and Mae Robinson of Sparta; one brother, Douglas Robinson of Georgia; three sisters, Ruby Holman, Rose Brown, and Thelma Spears all of Sparta; and six grandchildren, Heather, Macayla, Brittany, Shokota, Daniel, and Tiffany. ROBINSON, L.V. (1939 - 1999)L.V. Robinson, 59, of Spencer passed away June 23,1999 at White County Hospital in Sparta. Robinson, a retired Lineman for Caney Fork Electric, was born October 1, 1939 in White County to Hubron Robinson and Nina Mae Black Robinson. Services were Saturday, June 26, 1999 in the chapel of Love-Cantrell & Cope Spencer Chapel with burial in the Town Cemetery. Lofton Graves officiated. Rogers, 84, died Aug. 24 at NHC Healthcare after an extended illness. A retired lineman for the Chrysler Corporation and a member of the Baptist Church, he was the son of Pat and Attie Lou Emery Rogers. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Goodson Rogers; one daughter, Linda Tabbaa of McMinnville of McMinnville; three sons, Ronald H. Rogers of Hudson, Ohio, Luther H. Rogers of Harriman, and Paul D. Rogers of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Claiborn Rogers of Spencer; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at High's Chapel with Greg Sweeton officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-10 p.m. today at High's. High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RUGH, Cynthia Lyn Black (1963-2001)Cynthia Lyn Black Rugh, 37, of Colorado passed away Sunday, May 27, 2001. Rugh was born October 18, 1963, in IN, the daughter of Jim and Wanda Black. Memorial services were Saturday, June 16, 2001, in the First Baptist Church of Sparta. James Harvey officiated. Rugh was preceded in death by her grandfather, Leslie Demps; and grandmother, Reba Robinson Demps Hutchings. Survivors include her parents, Jim and Wanda Black of FL; daughter, Grace Rugh of CO; sister, Stacy Black of FL; and brother, James Black of CO. Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

RUSSELL, Colley Leon (circa 1907 - 1998)Bone Cave resident and Van Buren County native Colley Leon Russell, 91, died May 27 at River Park Hospital after a two-week illness. A retired farmer and a member of Central Church of Christ, he was the son of Elzie and Ersa Sparkman Russell, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Otto and R.J. Russell, and two sisters, Alberta Myers and Shelia Marseglia. Mr. Russell was the president of the Van Buren County Farm Bureau for 32 years and was a past president of the Van Buren Fair Association. He was also a former member of the Van Buren County School Board and a past secretary of the Modern Woodman. He is survived by one son, Milton Russell of Rocky River; two grandchildren, Steve Russell and Gail Solomon, both of Rocky River; six sisters, Shirley Hillis, Lorene Rigsby, Lorrell Smith and Mary Jo Steakley, all of McMinnville, Evelyn Wood of Shelbyville and Clata Escovedo of Texas; one sister-in-law, Elsie Safely of McMinnville; brother-in-law, Lawson (Nell) Safely of Springfield; six grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at High's Chapel with Jim Gammon officiating. Burial will follow at Crain Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County.
