HALE, Claude  (circa 1910-1998)

Claude Hale, 88
Oliver Springs resident and Van Buren County native Claude Hale, 88, a former resident of the Faulkner Springs community, died March 27 at his home after an extended illness.  A retired machinist for Mid-South Funeral Supply in McMinnville and a member of Madison Street Baptist Church, he served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.  The son of Bill and Mary Hillis Hale, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Jane Hillis Hale, in 1984, and one son, Claude Edward Hale, in 1971.  He is survived by one daughter, Joy Pryor of Oliver Springs; seven grandchildren, Barry Wayne Pryor, Greg Pryor, Renee Clowers, Harlan Hale,  Denise McManus, Chrissy Pryor and Nikki Pryor; and three great-grandchildren, Logan Clowers, Aaron and Matthew Hale.  Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at High's Chapel with Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Mt.View Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at High's.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HALE, John C.  (circa 1912-1993)

John Hale
Route 1, Bone Cave resident and Spencer native John C. Hale, 81, died Jan. 7 at River Park Hospital.  A self-employed carpenter and a member of the Laurel Creek Baptist Church, he was the son of Joe E. and Ella McCoy Hale.  He is survived by his wife, Mary Etta Rowland Hale; on son, Mason Hale of Bone Cave; one daughter June Woodlee of Rock Island; four grandchildren, Tammie Gribble, Billy and Harrison Woodlee all of Rock Island and Annette McKeehan of Bone Cave; and three great- grandchildren, Mary Ruth Gribble of Rock Island, Bobby Hodges and Christy McKeehan, both of Bone Cave.  Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Laurel Creek Baptist Church with Garvin Haley officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.  Visitation begins today at 10 a.m. at High's.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HALE, Lela Mae Grissom (1889 - 1978)

Mrs. Lela Mae Hale, 89, of Spencer died Wednesday at Warren County General Hospital following an extended illness. Services were scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Harmony Church of Christ with Billy R. Boyd and Lewis Savage officiating. Burial was to be in Long Cemetery. Mrs. Hale, a housewife, was a native of Van Buren County. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was the widow of Daniel A. Hale who died in 1962. Survivors include two sons, I. V. and J. P. of  Spencer; a daughter, Mrs. Lewis Savage of McMinnville; a sister, Mrs. Belle Johnson of McMinnville; three brothers, Herod Grissom of  Spencer, A. E. Grissom of McMinnville and Lee Grissom of Bone Cave; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-granchildren. High's Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

HALE, Mary Martina Hillis  (1877-1948)

Mrs. Mary Martina Hale, 71, widow of William Hale, died in the fifth district of Van Buren county Wednesday, September 29, at 9:10 p.m. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Crain Hill church with John W. High officiating. Burial was in the Crain Hill cemetery.  Mrs. Hale was a native of Warren county, born August 4, 1877.  Her parents were Ike Hillis and Nancy  McBride Hillis, she was married to William Hale, now deceased. Survivors are: Mrs. Jesse McGuire, R.L. Hillis, Claude Hale and  Mrs. Rebeccah Davis. Arrangements by High Funeral Home.

HALL, Hazel Venoy Cannon

Hazel Venoy Cannon Hall, 83, of Sparta, TN passed away Friday, November 26, 1999 at the National Health Corporation in Sparta, TN. Hall was a homemaker. She was born August 28, 1916 in White, Co. the daughter of Grover and Arie Cannon. Services were Sunday, November 28, 1999 at the Bear Cove Baptist Church with the burial at the Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Dave Shelly and J. T. Davis officiated. She was proceeded in death by her husband William Ernest Hall. Survivors include one son Robert Hall and wife Evelyn of Sparta, TN; one daughter Carol R. Emeigh of Colorado Springs, CO; one sister Betty Jo Parkey of Sparta, TN; four grandchildren Jennifer Boggs of Sparta, TN, Steven Hall of Sparta, TN, Michelle Day of Colorado Springs, CO and Eric Emeigh of Colorado Springs, CO; four great grandchildren. HAROLD, Brenda S. Jones  (1941-2001)

Brenda S. Jones Harold, 59, of Harrisville, WV,  passed away Monday, February 26, 2001.  Harold was born May 13, 1941, in Sparta, the daughter of Jeff and Kina C. Lawrence Jones. She was a homemaker.  Services were Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery.  Fate Wilson officiated.  Harold was preceded in death by her father.  Survivors include her mother, Kina c. Lawrence Jones of Sparta; three sons, Stephen Harold of OH; Curtis Harold of TX; Michael Harold of TX; two daughters, Teresa Lafferre of WV; Debbie Nichols of WV; two brothers, Hoyte Jones of Sparta; Sam Jones of IN; a sister, Hassie Cleveland of MI; and 12 grandchildren.  Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

HASTON, Lester

SPENCER
           Lester Haston, 25, and married whose home is on Cane Creek, five miles east of Spencer was found dead at the intersection of the Spencer-Herbert Domain and the Sparta-Pikeville roads. He had served in the recent World War, had been gassed and as a result had suffered from a weakened heart. He seemed to have been lost at this place and wondered around a great deal with a lantern which was found broken lose by. He was buried Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Haston graveyard.

HASTON, Richard Cornal

Richard Cornal (Dick) Haston, 79, of Sparta passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001.  Haston was born June 10, 1921, in White County, the son of H.C. and Lou Ella Rutherford Haston. He was a carpenter.  Services were Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Gum Springs Baptist Church with burial in Shady Grove Cemetery. Tony Wilson, Fate Wilson and Steve Jones officiated. Haston was preceded  in death by his parents.  Survivors include his wife, Emma Jean Winstead Haston of Sparta; a daughter, Margaret Beaver and husband and bill of KY; three sons, Richard Haston and wife  Selisa of Sparta; Jimmy Haston and wife Marsha of FL; Doug Haston and wife Cindy of Sparta; two special children, Tonya Mayhan; Jermey Holman; sister-in-law, Jessie Haston of Sparta; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.  Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

HEMP,  Catherine Herndon

Catherine Kemp Dies at 59; Frist field representative
                   Catherine Hamill Herndon Kemp, a senior field representative for U.S. Senator Bill Frist, died Monday, December 13, 1999, at the Chattanooga home. She was 59. Mrs. Kemp had worked in the campaigns of many Republican candidates and former office holder, including Senator Bill Brock, Governor Lamar Alexander, Mayor Gene Roberts and Hamilton County District Attorney General Gary Gerbitz. She served as vice chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party in the mid-1970's and was a member of the Hamilton County Republican Women's Club. Senator Frist chose Mrs. Kemp as a senior field representative soon after his election to the Senate. She was based in Chattanooga and had responsibilities for 11 counties in southeast Tennessee. Mrs. Kemp previously served as the regional representative of the governor's office during the administration of Lamar Alexander. She was a former member of the Tennessee Board of Education and had worked as a community development specialist for the city of Chattanooga. She was an avid supporter of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Athletics, particularly the basketball program. When the UTC Arena was being built a contest was held to select a name for the new facility, with a $1,000 prize for the person submitting the winning name. Mrs. Kemp won the contest with her suggestion "The Roundhouse," and subsequently donated her prize money to the UTC Athletic Department. She was a native of Charleston, W.VA. and the daughter of the late Judge Zeb H. Herndon and Nell C. Herndon. She was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church and its McFerrin Sunday school class. She attended the University of Kentucky, where she was homecoming queen, and graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in English. Survivors include her husband, Joseph C. Kemp; and a son, Andrew H. Kemp of Murfreesboro, TN. The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Reverend Brent Hall Officiating.  Burial will be in the Brainerd United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Brainerd United Methodist Church Choir Fund, 4315 Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37403.

Long illness claims Rayburn Hennessee
McMinnville resident and Van Buren native Rayburn Hennessee, 73, died July 19 at Centennial Medical Center after an extended illness.  A retired farmer and nurseyman and a member of the Church of Christ, he was the son of the late A.C. and Lillie Hillis Hennessee and was preceded in death by one brother, Thurman Hennessee and one sister, Florence Hillis.  He is survived by his wife, Eno Hillis Hennessee; two sons, Kenneth and Mason Hennessee, both of Bone Cave; two daughters, Mildred Hennessee of McMinnville and Helen Womack of Morrison; four brothers, R.J. Hennessee of Spencer, Cherful and Waymon Hennessee, both of Bone Cave and Clifton Hennessee of Doyle; six sisters, Pauline Young, Loueva McBride, Avo Billings and Agnes Wilson, all of McMinnville, Lilla Mae Roberts of Walling and Hassie Wilson of Doyle; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Love-Cantrell & COpe Funeral Home with John A. HENSLEY, Gladys Velma Sparks

Gladys Velma Sparks Hensley, 89, of Spencer passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001.  Hensley was born February 3, 1912, in White County, the daughter of Leis and Maltilda Conley Sparks. She was a homemaker. Services were Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Mooneyham Free Will Baptist Church with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Wayne Sullivan and Billy Smith officiated.  Hensley was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Helsley, her parents, two brothers, eight sisters, and a daughter-in-law.  Survivors include two sons, Hershel “Ray” Hensley of Crossville; Bobby Hensley of Spencer; daughters, Connie Bickford of Spencer; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.  Burris Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

HERREN, Gillis Lee
             Gillis Lee Herren, 47, of Sparta passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001.   Herren was born March 23, 1954, in White County, the son of Golden Hollis Herren and Bernice Price Herren. He was an avid farmer and a livestock exhibitor. He was a member of the 1971-72 White County High School “Blitz” Kids Basketball Team.  Services were Wednesday, August 29, 2001, in the Hunter Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Saylors Cemetery. Randy White, Randall Bickford, and Gary Bickford officiated. HICKEY, Claude E.  (circa 1910-2001)

Claude E. Hickey, 91, of Pikeville, passed away Thursday, April 26, at Life Care Center of Sparta. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Hickey of Pikeville; two daughters, Agnes Sims of Chattanooga and Barbara Robinson of Dunlap; two sons, Kenneth Hickey of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and James Hickey of Sparta; two brothers, Leslie Hickey of Pikeville and Clay Hickey of Sparta; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.  Services were held Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church with burial in Blankenship Cemetery in Bledsoe County.  Putnam-Reed Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

HICKS, Stanley E.  (circa 1916-1976)

TVA workman Stanley E. Hicks, 62-year-old resident of Spencer, died of an extended illness in East Ridge Community Hospital, Chattanooga, at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.  A native of Morgan County, he was a member of the Spencer Baptist Church and was married to the former Thelma Anderson Hicks, who survives.  Mr. Hicks, a son of the late Joseph Calvin and Allie Blair Hicks, is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Drake, Spencer, and Mrs. Linda Martin, McMinnville; two sisters, Mrs. John McGee, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Lois Lloyd, Athens, Ga., as well as four grandchildren.  Brother Dan and Ronnie Maples conducted final rites in the church of his membership at 3 p.m. Saturday, interment being in the Spencer Town Cemetery.  High's, of McMinnville, was in charge of arrangements.

HIGGINBOTHAM, Mary Charles   (1926-2001)

Mary Charles Higginbotham, 75, of McMinnville passed away Saturday, March 3, 2001.  Higginbotham was born February 14, 1926, in Warren County, the daughter of Johnson Higginbotham and Mae Bell McGee Higginbotham. She was retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation and attended the Baptist Church.  Services were Monday, March 5, 2001, in the Love-Cantrell & Cope Chapel with burial in Shellsford Cemetery. Titus Ward officiated.  Higginbotham was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Amos Higginbotham.  Survivors include two nieces, Wanda and James Harris of McMinnville; Mildred and John Hunter of Rock Island; a nephew, Billy and Brenda Higginbotham of Antioch; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Higginbotham of McMinnville.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

HILLIS, Arch E.  (1883-1948)

Arch E. Hillis, 64, Is Death Victim
Arch Edley Hillis, an employee of the Manchester Manufacturing Company, died in a local hospital Friday morning at 1:45 o'clock. Mr. Hillis suffered a hemorrhage a week previous to his death, from which he never recovered. He was 64. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Hillis cemetery in Van Buren county. John W.  High officiated and burial took place there. Mr. Hillis was a native of Van Buren county and was born December 17, 1883. He was a son of Johnson C. Hillis and Luster Wiseman Hillis.  He was married to the former Miss Lucy Ward, who survives. The deceased had been a lumber sawyer for the local mill for some time.  Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Lawrence Hillis, Marian Hillis and Hurbert Hillis, all of McMinnville; three daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Hillis, Edna Hillis and Ova Hillis, all of McMinnville; one step-son, Isaac Burks of Van Buren county; two stepdaughters, Mrs. John Atwell of McMinnville, and Mrs. George Dean, Springfield, Mo., and one brother, Titus Hillis of McMinnville.  Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

HILLIS, Barry Melvin  (1957 - 1999)

Barry Melvin Hillis, 41, of Spencer passed away July 23, 1999.  Hillis was the owner of the We Haul 4 U. He attended Pioneer Community Baptist Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was born September 11, 1957 in Van Buren County the son of John M. Hillis and Elizabeth Measles Hillis.  Services were held Sunday, July 25, 1999 at Love-Cantrell and Cope Spencer Chapel with burial in Molloy Cemetery. John Thompson officiated.  Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Hillis of McMinnville; one daughter DeVon Hillis of Sparta; his mother, Elizabeth Hillis of Spencer; his father, John Hillis of  Spencer; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Darrel and Brenda Hillis of Spencer, Nolan and Jackie Hillis of Quebeck; nephew, Travis Hillis of Spencer; niece, Ashley Hillis of Spencer; great nephew, Tanner Hillis of Spencer.  His son Caleb Dean Hillis, and grandparents, Irving and Maggie Hillis, and Bill and Ethel Measles preceded Hillis in death.  Love-Cantrell and Cope Spencer Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

HILLIS, BLACKSTONE O.  (1854-1941)

Blackstone O. Hillis, 86, one of the oldest citizens of Van Buren County, died at his home at 9:30 o'clock January 25, at Laurelburg.  Funeral Services were conducted from the River view church Monday afternoon by Elder Marion Thompson.  Burial was in Hillis cemetery.  Mr. Hillis, who was the last surviving member of a family of 21 children, was the son of the late Isaac and Mary Logue Hillis.  He was born in Van Buren County March 12, 1854, and devoted his entire life to farming.  He is survived by one son, Ralph Hillis of Rocky River and two grandsons, Dennie and Collie Hillis of Rocky River.  Arrangements by High Funeral Home.

River View community - The death angel visited this community last Saturday night and claimed for its victim Uncle Black Hillis.  He had been in failing health only a short time before his death.  This community will greatly miss him for the kind deeds he showed toward everyone.



HILLIS, Clarence C.  (circa 1913-1994)

Van Buren native Clarence Hillis dies

West Baden, Ind. resident and Van Buren County native Clarence C. Hillis, 81, died May 24 at Medco Center in French Lick, Ind.  A farmer and member of the South Liberty Church of Christ, he was the son of the late Clabe and Mae Thomison Hillis and was preceded in death by his first wife, Elma Curise in 1960.  He is survived by his wife, Lorene Meehan Hillis, two sons, Seborn Hillis of Montgomery, AL and Wayne Hillis of Knoxville, TN; four step-children, Jack, Bill and Jerry Reynolds, all of West Baden and Robert Reynolds of Indianapolis, Ind; four granddaughters and five great grandchildren.  Services were held Thursday at Brosmer-Drabing Funeral Home with James Babcock officiating.  Information courtesy of High Funeral Home.

HILLIS, Della Jane Dodson  (circa 1902-1985)

Della Hillis
Bone Cave resident Mrs. Della Jane Hillis, 83, died of a lingering illness in Sparta Health Care Center at  6: p.m. Tuesday.  The Van Buren County native was a member of the Church of Christ, the widow of Nolan Hillis who died Sept. 29, 1974 and a daughter of the late Dan Lou Mitchell Dodson.  She was a retired schoolteacher and homemaker.  She is survived by a daughter and sister, Mrs. Joy Bouldin and Mrs. Pearl Dodson Sparkman, both of Bone Cave, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.  Bobby Wilhite and Tim Lavender conducted services in the chapel of High Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday.  Interment was in Crain Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County.

HILLIS, Earmon  (circa 1905-1993)

Retired Farmer Mr. Hillis Succumbs

Huntsville resident and Madison Co., Ala. native Earmon Hillis, 88, died March 25 after a lingering illness.  A retired farmer and a member of the Rice Baptist Church, he was the son of Squire and Sara McPherson Hillis and was preceded in death by his wife, Theo Cantrell in 1988.  He is survived by six sons, Junior, Lawin, Wayne, Kenneth, Larry and Garry Hillis, all of New Market, Ala.; one daughter, Lorene Bowen of Toney, Ala.; two brothers, Charlie and Walter Hillis of New Market; four sisters, Sadie Sharp of Huntsville, Ruthie McCord of New Market, Mai Ward of Elora and Minnie Wiseman of McMinnville; two nieces, Mrs. Titus Ward and Mrs. Birdie Tenpenny, both of McMinnville;  17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  Services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Gallant Funeral Home Chapel in Hazel Green, Ala. with Rev. Winfred Stayton and Rev. C.W. HILLIS, Ellis Leroy  (circa 1912 - 1989)

Ellis Hillis, 77
Creamery Street resident Ellie LeRoy Hillis, 77, was dead on arrival at  Warren Regional Hospital at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.  A native of Van Buren County, he was retired from McMinnville Manufacturing Co.  Married to the former Clessie Mae Walker, he was a son of the late Oliver Edley and Fluellar Russell Hillis.  Besides his wife, he is survived by son Donald Lee Hillis of Oak Ridge, sisters Lettie Jane Tucker and Mary Ruth Carr of this city, brothers Morgan of McMinnville and Flin Hillis of Olivet, Mich. and two grandchildren.  Willard Ralph, Jr. conducted last rites in High's Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday, with burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Emily Virginia Hillis, 88
Red Boiling Springs resident and Kansas City, Kan., native Emily Virginia Hillis, 88, died Dec. 27 at Macon County General Hospital in Lafayette after an extended illness.  She was the daughter of Floyd and Selmer Davenport Hillis, and is survived by sister, Frances Hillis Higgins of Ivy Bluff; nieces, Wanda Gann of Morrison and Beverly Davis of Murfreesboro; and nephews, Wayne Higgins of Park City, Utah, and John David Hillis of Fairfax, Va.  Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Oak Grove Cemetery at Barren Fork with Ken Mears officiating. HILLIS, Ersie Dodson  (1889-1962)

Mrs. Ersie Hillis Dies; Rites Held
          Mrs. Ersie Dodson Hillis, 72, year old retired Postmistress, died at her residence in the Laurelburg Community of Van Buren County at 7:20 a.m. Thursday.  She had been ill for three months.  Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Shellsford Baptist Church.  John W. High and Clayton Gribble officiated, and burial was in Shellsford Cemetery.  A native of Warren County, Mrs. Hillis was born Dec. 15, 1889 and was the daughter of James and Augusta Katherine Evans Dodson.  She was married to Walter Hillis, who preceded her in death by some 30 years.  Mrs. Hillis was for many years the Postmistress of the U.S. Post Office at Laurelburg, having retired four years ago.  She was a member of the Church of Christ.  Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Joe Lee Rascoe of Laurelburg,  Mrs. Lloyd Shockley of Bone Cave, and Mrs. John E. Smith of Chattanooga; four brothers, Rom Dodson, James A. Dodson, Richmond Dodson and Lester Dodson, all of McMinnville, and four grandchildren.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Everett Lynn Hillis, 56
Bone Cave resident and Van Buren County native Everett Lynn Hillis, 56, died Feb. 27 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville after a brief illness.  An engineering department employee of A.O. Smith and a member of the Church of Christ, he was the son of Murphy and Laura Jewell Cummings Hillis.  He is survived by several cousins.  Services were held Tuesday at High’s Chapel with Tim Fariss officiating.  Burial followed at White Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

McMinnville resident and Grundy County native Grover (Shag) Cleveland Hillis, 78, died Nov. 27 at River Park Hospital after a one-and-a-half week illness.  A nursery worker and a member of the Baptist Church, he was the son of Jess and Della Jane Holland Hillis and was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Busey Hillis.  He is survived by stepdaughters, Lula Mae Roach and Katie Cantrell, both of McMinnville; stepson, George Busey of Michigan; 12 step-grandchildren, four step- great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at High's Chapel with Larry Neal officiating. HILLIS,  Harvie B.  (1933-2001)

Harvie B. Hillis, 67, of McMinnville passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2001. Hillis was born September 3, 1933, in Van Buren County, the son of Dennie Hillis and Margie Bouldin Hillis.  He worked for the State Highway Department. He attended Gath Baptist Church and was a R.A. Leader there. He was also a member of the Lions Club. Services were Thursday, February 22, 2001, in Gath Baptist Church with burial in Gath Cemetery. Ray Gilder and Danny Barnes officiated. Hillis was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Faye Hillis, and his sister, Sue Taylor. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Hillis of McMinnville; three daughters, Jody Duncan of McMinnville; Pam Hillis of FL; Sharon Muzard of IL; four sons, Harvey Hillis, Jr. of FL; Donald Hillis of McMinnville; Ronald Hillis of McMinnville; James McGonigal of CO; a sister, Bettie Atwell of IL; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. HILLIS, Homer Cleveland  (circa 1914-1997)

Spencer resident and Van Buren County native Homer Cleveland (Cleve) Hillis, 83, died March 14 at Columbia River Park Hospital after an extended illness.  A retired supervisor of highway maintenance with the Van Buren County Highway Department, a coal miner for 20 years and a member of the Church of Christ, he was the son of Ruben T. and Della Roberts Hillis and was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Johnson Hillis in 1974; two brothers, James Marion and B.B. Hillis; and one sister, Nora Jane Hillis.  He is survived by five sons, Donald T., Stanley, Douglas, James Hugh and Marty Hillis, all of Spencer; three daughters, Glenna Kay ____ of Sparta, Sue Grissom of Campaign and Sharon Shockley of Spencer; one brother, Jake Hillis of Spencer; 18 grandchildren and __  great-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at High's Chapel with Billy ___ and Titus Ward officiating.  Burial will follow at Shockley Cemetery in Van Buren County.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HILLIS,  James Earl  (1921-1988)

James Hillis
Bone Cave resident James Earl Hillis, 66, died of an extended illness in River Park Hospital at 6 p.m. Monday.  A farmer and cattle trader, the Van Buren County native was a veteral of World War II.  Married to the former Virginia Prater, he was a son of the late Irving and Mrs. Maggie Hoyte Gillentine Hillis of Bone Cave.  In addition to his widow and mother, he is survived by sons Billy of McMinnville and Mark Hillis of Rocky River, sister Vida Pearl Parker of Bone Cave, brothers Karl, Winslo and Parker Hillis of Bone Cave, John M. Hillis of Spencer and Walter Hillis of Chattanooga, as well as several nieces and nephews.  The body is in state at High Funeral Home.  Ron Martin will conduct services at 2 p.m. Thursday in High's Chapel, interment to follow in Crain Hill Cemetery.

HILLIS, James Irving  (1888-1976)

James Irving Hillis
World War I veteran and retired farmer James Irving Hillis, aged 87, succumbed to a lingering illness in River Park Hospital at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.  A member and deacon of Harmony Church of Christ, he was married to the former Maggie Gillentine, who survives, and was a son of the late John Huston and Nellie Barnes Hillis.  The Van Buren County native is survived by his wife, six sons and a daughter, Karl, Earl, Wince and Parker, all of Bone Cave; John M. Hillis of Spencer, and Walter Hillis, Chattanooga, and Vida Pearl Parker, Bone Cave; a brother and two sisters, Leslie Hillis, Doyle; Lonnie Graham and Jerusha Kell, both of Spencer, as well as 19 grandchildren.  Brothers Ron Martin and John W. High conducted last rites in the church of his member- ship at 2 p.m. Friday, intombment being in Crain Hill Cemetery.  High's, Inc., had charge of the arrangements.

Josie Adean Hillis, 92, a resident of Route 1, Bone Cave, and the widow of the late Revedy Hillis, died at her residence July 5 following an extended illness.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.  Last rites were conducted July 7 in the chapel of High Funeral Home.  Marion Ward officiated, and burial was in the Hillis Cemetery in Van Buren County.

HILLIS, Karl Irving  (1920-1994)

Karl Hillis succumbs to two-month illness

Sparta resident and Van Buren County native Karl Irving Hillis, 74, died Aug. 6 at White County Community Hospital after a two month illness.  A retired employee of 40 years of the Agriculture Stablization Conservation Service and a member of the Harmony Church of Christ, he served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.  The son of Irving and Maggie Gillentine Hillis, he is survived by his wife, Jeanette Hillis; one step-son, Garry Parker of Sparta; one step-granddaughter, Amber Guy of Sparta; one sister Vida Pearl Parker of Cedar Grove; four brothers, Wince and Parker HIllis of Cedar Grove, Johnny Hillis of Spencer and Walter Hillis of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.  Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at High's Chapel with Marion Ward officiating.  Burial will follow at Crain HIll Cemetery in Van Buren County with military graveside rites administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HILLIS, Laura Jewell Cummings  (circa 1908-1985)

Jewell Hillis
Rocky River community resident Mrs. Laura Jewell Hillis, who had suffered an extended illness, was dead on arrival at River Park Hospital at 2:11 p.m. Sunday.  She would have been 77 years of age Monday.  A member of the Church of Christ and native of Warren County, she was the wife of Murphy Hillis and a daughter of the late Gabriel Penn and Elizabeth Grissom Cummings.  The body will be in state at 10 a.m. Monday in High's parlors.  In addition to her husband she is survived by a son and sister, Everett Hillis of Rocky River and Mrs. Roth Koester of Florida, as well as several nieces and nephews.  Vernon Joines and Chuck Mulican will conduct services in High's Chapel, the funeral home in charge, at 2 p.m. Tuesday.  Intombment will be in White Hill Cemetery.

Lena Hillis
Ill for the past year, Mrs. Lena Maria Hillis, 88-year-old resident of Route 1, Morrison died in McMinnville Health Care  Center at 12:30 a.m. Sunday.  A member of the Church of Christ and native of Van Buren County, she was the widow of James Robert Hillis who died in 1956 and was a daughter of the late Dalton and Eliza Martin Hillis.  She is survived by sons Willard Hillis of Morrison and Loyd Hillis of Fairborn, Ohio, sisters Mrs. Eula Yates of Spencer and Miss Bula Mae Hillis of Bone Cave, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Funeral rites are scheduled at 3 p.m. Monday in McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel, Lloyd Gale to officiate and burial to follow in Crain Hill Cemetery.

HILLIS, Martha E. Payne  (1859-1948)

Mrs. Martha E. Hillis, 88, widow of John Hillis, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amanda Bowman, in Dunlap, Tuesday morning, November 23, at 7 o'clock.  The remains were brought to McMinnville in a High Funeral Home ambulance and funeral services and burial took place at Friendship. John W. High conducted the funeral.  Mrs. Hillis was a native of Van Buren county.  She was born December 18, 1859, the daughter of Ben Payne and Amanda Payne.  Besides her daughter mentioned above, the deceased is survived by three sons, Virgil Hillis, Huntsville, Ala., Sam Hillis, Oak Ridge, and Dewey Hillis, Campaign; three daughters, Mrs. Violet Brown, Campaign, Mrs. Frances Johnson, Hill Creek, and Mrs. Julia Johnson, Campaign; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Cope, Texas, and Mrs. Lou Bouldin, Spencer; and two brothers, O.B. Payne, Campaign, and Ben Payne, New Market, Ala.  Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

Mary Susanna Hillis, 83, passed on June 22, at Raintree Manor in Warren County.  Hillis, a homemaker, was born August 25, 1915 in Madison Co. Alabama.  Graveside services were held Wednesday, June, 23  at Crain Hill Cemetery.  Survivors include five daughters, Beatrice Martin of McMinnville,TN, Annie Mae Hillis of North Carolina, Vera Osborne of Taft, TN, Dorothy Hillis of Nashville, TN, and Mary V. Mr. Nolin B. Hillis, who was 66 years of age and a farmer by occupation, died of a lingering illness in River Park Hospital at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.  A native of Van Buren County and resident of the Rock Run community, he was married to the former Della Dodson, who survives.  A son of the late John Houston and Mattie Stubblefield Hillis, he was a member of the Church of Christ.  He and Mrs. Hillis were married Aug. 3, 1933.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Billy Bouldin, Bone Cave; two brothers and two sisters, Leslie Hillis, Doyle and Irving Hillis, Bone Cave; Mrs. Lonnie Graham and Mrs. Jerusha Kell, both of Spencer, and two grandchildren, Rance and Terry Bouldin, both of Bone Cave.  Brothers Rufe Higgins, Tim Lavander and Tom MIlstead will officiate at last rites scheduled in High's Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, interment to follow in Crain HIll Cemetery.  High's, Inc., in charge of arrangements.

HILLIS, Revida (1898-1949)

Revida Hillis, 50, Van Buren county native, died in Fayetteville, Sunday morning at 1:10 o'clock. He passed away at the home of a cousin, Henry Hale, and death was attributed to a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o:clock at White Hall. Rev. James Dodson, pastor of the Shellsford Baptist Church, officiated and burial was in the White Hall cemetery. The deceased was born May 6, 1898, the son of C.C. Hillis and Naomi Wiseman Hillis. He had resided in Lincoln county for past 15 years. Surviving are two brothers, Jott Hillis, Altamont, and Oliver Hillis, McMinnville, and one sister, Mrs. Hother Roberts, Beersheba. Arrangements were by High's.

HILLIS, Roswell Isaac  (1890-1962)

Interment Sunday For Mr. Hillis
          Rosewell Isaac (Ros) Hillis died unexpectedly at his home on Route 6, after suffering a heart attack at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning.  He was 72.  Funeral services were held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel.  Rev. Don Owens and John W. High officiated, and burial was in Crain Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County.  Nephews served as honorary and active pallbearers.  Mr. Hillis was a native of Van Buren County.  He was born May 5, 1890, and was the son of the late John H. and Nellie Barnes Hillis.  He was married in 1910 to the former Ethel Kell, who survives, and was a member of the Church of Christ.  Mr. Hillis was a retired farmer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeff F. Hillis of Indianapolis, Doyle Hillis and Kelley Hillis of McMinnville; five daughters, Mrs. Theron Grissom, Mrs. Olney Hitchcock and Mrs. James A. Walker of McMinnville, Mrs. C.G. HILLIS, Russ  (circa 1898 -1993)

Extended illness claims Russ Hillis

Route 9 resident and Van Buren County native Russ Hillis, 95, died Nov. 22 after an extended illness.  A retired farmer and a member of the Baptist Church, he was the son of Coy and Viola Hillis and was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Teeters Hillis in 1977.  He is survived by two sons, Otto Hillis of the Rocky River community and Ralph E. Hillis of McMinnville; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at High's Chapel with Dennis Deweese officiating.  Burial will follow at McGlothlin Cemetery in Sequatchie County.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sol Hillis Dies At Fairview Home

Sol Hillis, 72, retired Faiview farmer, died at his home Wednesday afternoon at 1:15 o’clock, following an illness of three years. Funeral arrangements were not complete at press time, but will be announced by Love-Chantrell & McGrath, funeral directors in charge.  Mr. Hillis is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nannie Lou Hollis, and four sons.

Mr. Hillis’ Rites Held At Crain Hill

Funeral services for Sol Hillis, 72, who died at his home in Fariview community Wednesday, June 10, at 1:15 p.m., were held Friday at 11 a.m. at Crain Hill Church of Christ. Burial took place there.  Mr. Hillis was a native of Spencer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Losie Hillis and he was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nannie Lou Hillis; three sons, Albert, Fayetteville, Aubrey, Martin and Remus, McMinnville, and four daughters, Mrs. Leonard Whittaker, Mrs. Charles Roberts, Mrs. Eliza Marlow and Mrs. Ella McClain, all of McMinnville; two sisters, Mrs. Lawson Smitty, Huntsville, Ala., and Mrs.Winfield Hale, Louisville, Ky.  Also three brothers, Ross and Ernest Hillis, McMinnville, and Jim Hillis. HILLIS, Zora Lee Grissom

Zora Lee Hillis, 60, of Rock Island passed away Friday, August 24, 2001.  Hillis was born June 9, 1941, in Delphi, Indiana, the daughter of Ivan Doyle Grissom and Sally Lourine Hillis. She was a homemaker.   Services were Monday, August 27, 2001, in the High Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Blaxton B.O. Hillis Cemetery. Ralph Tucker officiated.  Hillis was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth “Sonny” Grissom and Freddie Grissom.  Survivors include three sons, Dewayne Hillis of Sparta; Kenneth Hillis of Rock Island; Jerale Jr. Hillis of Rock Island; five grandchildren, mother, Sally Lourine Grissom of McMinnville; brother, Austin Grissom of Rock Island; sister, Evelyn Powers of McMinnville; several nieces and nephews.  High Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

HITCHCOCK, Minnie Isabell Grissom  (1882-1952)

Mrs. Hitchcock, 69, Dies At Bone Cave

Mrs. Minnie Isabell Hitchcock, 69, wife of Murphy C. Hitchcock, well known Van Buren county farmer, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at 1 o'clock at her home in the Bone Cave community. Her death resulted from s heart attack.  Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Long cemetery  Chapel with Rev. W. J. Thompson, Baptist minister, and John W. High officiating.  Burial took place there.   A native and lifelong resident of Van Buren county, Mrs. Hitchcock was born October 17, 1882.  Her parents were Sam Grissom and Harriet Bouldin Grissom and she was married to Mr. Hitchcock in 1904. Mrs. Hitchcock had been a member of the Laurel Creek Baptist Church for a period of 47 years. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Lawrence Hitchcock, Bone Cave, and Eldridge Hitchcock, McMinnville; a daughter, Mrs. J.C. Dillon, Willoughby, Ohio; one brother, J.A. Grissom, Campaign, and a sister, Mrs. Clint Simmons., Bone Cave. Arrangements were in charge of High Funeral Home.

HITCHCOCK, Morris Sampson  (1894-1984)

Mr. Hitchcock
Retired Spencer farmer and merchant Morris Sampson Hitchcock, 90, succumbed in a two-day illness in River Park Hospital at 8:05 a.m. Monday.  A native of Van Buren County and member of the Church of God of Prophecy, he was a veteran of World War I.  A son of the late Sam and Nancy McCoy Hitchock, he was first married to the former Mary Leona Jaco, who died in 1979, and later to the former Alvaree Harris.  In addition to his widow, he is survived by four sons and two daughters, Liston and Gerald of Bone Cave, Leard of Rock Island and Morris S. Hitchcock of Cleveland, Mrs. Shirley Brady and Mrs. Grace Drake; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Dymple WIlliams of Sparta; three brothers and five sisters, Marlin and Aulton of Rock Island and Gordon Hitchcock of Albany, Ga.; Mrs. Alma Chambers of Columbus, Ga.; Mrs. Louise Lytle of Miami; Mrs. Cleo Delong and Mrs. Lorena Cox of McMinnville; and Mrs. Bobbie Bryant of Bone Cave; 23 grandchildren, 46 great-grand- children, two step-grandchildren, and a step-great-grandchild.

Murphy C. Hitchcock
Murphy C. Hitchcock, 89-year-old blacksmith and native of Van Buren County, died of a lingering illness Friday, Dec. 11, at 8:15 a.m., at Warren county General Hospital.  A member of the Church of Christ, he was a son of the late John  and Margaret York Hitchcock. He was married in 1958 to Lillie Phifer Barlow Hitchcock, who survives.  Other survivors include two sons, Eldridge Hitchcock, McMinnville, and Lawrence Hitchcock, Manchester; one daughter, Bessie Maye Dillon, McMinnville; two step-sons, Powell Barlow, Quebeck, and J.T. Barlow, U.S. Air Force, Quam, Germany; one step-daughter, Mary Edna Rogers, Spencer; 16 grandchildren, and 17 great- grandchildren.  Funeral services were scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 13, at  2 p.m., at Laurel Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Garvin Haley and John W. High officiating, and burial to follow at Long Cemetery. High's Inc., was in charge of arrangements.

Rock Island resident and Warren County native Robert Carl Hitchcock, 71, died Dec. 12 at River Park Hospital after an extended illness.  A retired farmer and member of the Church of Christ, he was the son of Horace and Electa George Hitchcock and was preceded in death by one brother, Houston Hitchcock and one sister, Winona Sellars.  He is survived by his wife, Mildred Hale Hitchcock; four daughters, La Juana Palk of Sparta, Kathy Mathis of Lascasas, Carla Pope of Springfield and Julie Bohannon of Monterey; one son, Steve Hitchcock of Rock Island; seven brothers, Olney Hitchcock of the Hillsville community, Euclid Hitchcock of Nelsonville, Ohio, Alvin Hitchcock of Carthage, Carson, Randle and Buford of Rock Island and Kenny Hitchcock of McMinnville; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Services were held Wednesday at High's Chapel with Bill Weaver and Danny Ninck officiating.  Burial followed at Gath Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to CHrist Church in care of Bill Weaver, Box 605, McMinnville.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Robbie Winfred Hitchcock, 77, died Dec. 24 at Columbia River Park Hospital after a two-month illness.  A homemaker and a member of Grace Temple Assembly of God, she was the daughter of Isaac Roswell and Ethel Kell Hillis and was preceded in death by one brother, Doyle Hillis.  She is survived by her husband, Olney Hitchcock; two sons, Allen and Mike Hitchcock of McMinnville; two daughters, Martha McGregor and Margaret Hitchcock, both of McMinnville; four sisters, Minnie Grissom, Katherine Jones and Rose Walker, all of McMinnville and Clara Barton Smith of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two brothers, J.F. and Kelly Hillis of McMinnville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at High's Chapel with R.L. Geren and Glen Kight officiating.  Burial will follow at Crain Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Spencer resident and Grundy County native Edith Inez Hobbs, 55, died Oct. 2 after a three-day illness.  A homemaker and a member of Freewill Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Luke Minister and Esta Lee Campbell Sartain; and was preceded in death by daughter, Lautricia Hobbs in 1976.  She is survived by her husband, Morris Hobbs; two daughters, Alease Madewell of Spencer and Ruchelle Gibson of Tullahoma; son, Luke Hobbs of Spencer; three grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Services were held Tuesday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Chapel with William Wanamaker and Jerry Stoik officiating. HOLLAND, Lena Mae Drake  (1898-1985)
 
Van Buren County native Mrs. Mae Drake Holland, 86-yea-old resident of Oklahoma City, died of a three-day illness in Northeastern Health Care Center there Saturday morning.  A member of Jehovah's Witnesses and former teacher in the Van Buren County school system, she was the widow of Sheridan Holland and a daughter of Silas Abraham and Nancy Grissom Drake.  Survivors include a son and two daughters, Gordon Holland, Mrs. Lillian Ann Hicks and Mrs. Sherry Barnwell, all of Oklahoma City.  Locally, she is survived by several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services and interment will be Tuesday morning in Oklahoma City.  The information was provided by McMinnville Funeral Home.

Marie Danielle Hollandsworth, 18, of Warren County, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001.  Hollandsworth was born August 17, 1982, in Warren County.  She was a homemaker.  Survivors include one daughter, Abigail Denise Birdwell of McMinnville; fiancee, Jeff Birdwell of McMinnville; mother and step father, Debbie and Ralph West of Sparta; one sister, Nancy Denise Hollandworth of McMinnville; step brother, Ralph West, Jr. of McMinnville; grandmothers, Betty Powell Short and Ernestine Smartt both of McMinnville; great grandmother, Ruby Powell of McMinnville; step grandmother, Jean West of Sparta; aunt and uncle, Nancy and Jeff Lance of McMinnville; niece, Alexandria Marie Hollandsworth of McMinnville; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Services will be held Friday, May 4, 2001, at High Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Friendship Cemetery. HOOPER, John Patrick  (1870-1952)

Spencer Rites For Mr. Hooper

John Patrick Hooper, 81, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.C. Fowler, in Spencer Thursday morning at 11:30 o'clock.  He had been ill two months.  Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Spencer Church of God. Burial took place in the Spencer cemetery. Mr. Hooper was a native of Dover, Tenn., born December 28, 1870; he was married to Miss Eveline Norman, who died November 3, 1918.  Mr. Hooper moved to Spencer in 1946 from Decatur, Ala., and had resided there with his daughter since. He was a member of the Catholic church. In addition to his daughter he is survived by two sons, William Michael Hooper, U.S. Navy, and J. D. Hooper, Decatur, Ala.; two other daughters, Mrs. Sadie Motts, Decatur, Ala., and Mrs. Ruth Rockhill, St. Petersburg, Ala. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elvie Lou Howard, 83
Spencer resident and Bledsoe County native Elvie Lou Howard, 83, died April 13 at Sunrise Health Care & Rehab of Decatur.  A homemaker and a member of Pineland Gospel Mission, she was the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Elizabeth Keady Solomon; and was preceded in death by her husband, James Brady Howard in 1986.  She is survived by two sons, Carl J. Solomon of Whitwell and Woodrow C. Lester of Decatur; one brother, Owen Solomon of Red Bank; one stepson, Eddie Howard of Spencer; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at High's Chapel with Darrell Nance officiating.  Burial will follow at Seitz Cemetery in Van Buren County.  Visitation will be held from 2 - 9 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Thursday at High Funeral Home.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HOWARD, Larry Winford (circa 1952 - 1999)

Larry Winford Howard, 47, of McMinnville, passed away July 7, 1999 at River Park Hospital.  Howard was born January 13, 1952 in Van Buren County the son of Eli Howard and Alberta Clendenon Howard. He was retired from Magnetek Electric and attended the Methodist church.  Services were Saturday, July 10, 1999 in the Love- Cantrell and Cope Spencer Chapel with burial in the Seitz Cemetery. Phil Tollett officiated.  Survivors include his wife, Charlotte McCracken Howard of McMinnville; his mother, Alberta Clendenon Howard of Spencer; one sister, Kathy Hale of Spencer; three brothers, Terry, Thomas and Joe Lee Howard, all of Spencer; three nieces and two nephews.  Love-Cantrell and Cope Spencer Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Normandy resident and Van Buren County native Ora Belle Hughes, 68, died May 13 at Manchester Health Care Center after an extended illness.  A retired clerk with Roses Department Store and a member of the Women's Moose Auxiliary, she was the daughter of James and Esther Walker Chapman; and was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Hillis; second husband, Hubert Hughes and one son, Thomas Hillis.  She is survived by her companion, O.W. (Hotwire) Young; two sons, Morris and Paul Hillis, both of McMinnville; one daughter, Dorris Copeland of St. Louis, MO;  seven grandchildren and seven great-grand- children.  Services were held Saturday at High's Chapel with burial following at New Union Cemetery on Highway 30.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

HUTSON, Marvin Edward

                Marvin Edward Hutson, 61, of Sparta passed away Thursday, August 23, 2001.  Hutson was born November 29, 1939, in White County, the son of Marvin and Sarah Lular Mabe Hutson. He was a farmer.  Services were Saturday, August 25, 2001, in Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Taylors Providence Cemetery. David Lee England and Joe Richard England officiated.  Hutson was preceded in death by his father, and brother, Kenneth Hutson.  Survivors include his wife, Tina Horn Hutson of Sparta; son, Kenneth Hutson and wife Lisa of Quebeck; three daughters, Darlene Clark and husband Marvin of Quebeck; Kathy Horn and husband Teddy of Sparta; Lisa Hutson of Sparta; his mother, Sarah Mabe Hutson  of Dowelltown; three sisters, Geneva Simmons of Sparta; Mary Joines of Dowelltown; Fannie Lou Jones of Sparta; six grandchildren, Albert; Ken; Thomas; Kyla; Jackie; and Sydney.  Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
