Galloway Rites Held Thursday
Mrs. Margaret Jo Ann Campen Galloway died at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday at Faulkner Springs Hospital following an illness of two weeks. She was 92. Funeral services were held at High's Chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday. John W. High and Rev. B.C. Gibbons officiated, and burial was in Long Cemetery in Van Buren county. She was a native of Warren county, and was the daughter of Gavin Hoyte Campen and Sarah Elizabeth Roberts Campen. She was born Nov. 20, 1870, and was married in 1889 to the late William Samuel Galloway who died in 1947. She was a member of the Church of Christ. survivors include one son William Marvin Galloway of McMinnville; two daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Grissom of McMinnville, and Mrs. Mattie Fitzpatrick of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren. GAMBLE, GRADE (1905 - 1963)
Funeral services for Alton L. Gamble , 51, Doyle garage owner, Mason, and Legionaire, were conducted Monday afternoon from the Doyle Methodist church by the Rev. Guy Hawkins and the Rev. J.M. Williams. Burial with full Masonic rites was in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Hunter Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Gamble , who had been in ill health for several months, died at his home in Doyle early Sunday morning. He was active in Doyle business life and in the Sparta unit of the Masons and the Hennessee-Baker Post of the American Legion, until ill health forced him to retire from all duties. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Erin Sims Gamble: a son, Barnett Gamble: and a daughter, Miss Velna Gamble.Grade Gamble buried at Pleasant Hill
GAMBLE, JAMES M. (1862 - 1946)
Grade Gamble, son of Clint and Fanny Gamble, was born in Van Buren Co. on December 19, 1888. In 1905, he moved with his family to Pleasant Hill, where he attended school and graduated from Pleasant Hill Academy with the class of 1915. He served with the infantry in World War 1 and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of World War 1 He spent his later years farming. He passed away at Eastern State Hospital on May 26, 1963. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, May 28, with Rev. Jack Irwin officiating. He was laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery beside his parents and sister, Edna, who preceeded him in death. He is survived by one sister Flora Gamble.James M. Gamble buried March 12
James Mc Grady Gamble, vetren White Co Banker, died at his home in Doyle Sunday afternoon, following a short illness. He was 84 years old and served as president of the Doyle Bank during it's existence. Funeral Services were conducted at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, March 12 at the Church of Christ in Doyle, with Brother E.H. Hoover of Chattanooga officiating. Interment was in Bethlehem Cemetery with Hunter Funeral Home of Sparta in charge. Mr. Gamble was born in Van Buren County on Feb. 12, 1862 and for many years was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Byrd D. Gamble, a daughter, Mrs.Tom Bolin of Knoxville; one son, Alton L. Gamble of Doyle, and five grandchildren. Active pallbearers were: Warner Bowers, Chester Miller, Ernest Rogers, Charley Green, Jim Steakley, Hugh Moore. Honorary pallbearers were: Morgan Lewis, O.C. Stone, A.W. Grissom, Alvin Keathley, C.D. Bosson, S.G. Bulter, S.H. Mccormick. S.M. Arnold and Waymon Mitchell acted as ushers.

GILLENTINE, Charlie (1897-1962)Mr. Gillentine Dies; Rites Wednesday
Charlie Gillentine died at 5:30 p.m. Monday in a Nashville hospital, following a lingering illness. He was 65. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel, with P.D. Martin officiating. Burial was in Old Bybee Cemetery. Mr. Gillentine was born in Van Buren county January 10, 1897 and was the son of Joe and Vida Camping Gillentine. He was married in 1923 to the former Mary Ethel Womack, who survives. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived, in addition to his wife, by one son, J.C. Gillentine of Rock Island, one daughter, Mrs. W.A. Rogers of Rock Island, one brother, Parker Gillentine, of Anderson, Ind.; and three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Hillis of Bone Cave, Mrs. Bessie Curtis of Irving College and Mrs. Marion Boyd of Celina, Kansas. George Frank Gillentine, 69, died at 5 a.m. at Faulkner Springs Hospital. He had been ill six days. Funeral arrangements are in complete and will be announced by High Funeral Home. Born February 10, 1891, he was the son of Joe Gillentine and Vida Campen Gillentine. He was married in 1916 to the former Cora Christian, who died in 1930. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Vida Shockley of Irving College; four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Hartrick of Amarillo, Texas, Mrs. Pearl Frazehas of Texas, Mrs. Bessie Nell Cook of Nashville and Mrs. Ruth Watson of Viola; two sons, Grover Gillentine and William Gillentine, both of Route 5; two brothers, Parker Gillentine of Anderson, Indiana and Charlie Gillentine of McMinnville; three sisters, Mrs. Irving Hillis of Bone Cave, Mrs. Bruce Curtis of Irving College, and Mrs. A.O. Grover Hoyte Gillentine, a former resident of McMinnville last Tuesday in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 43. He had suffered a lingering illness. Final rites were held at High's Chapel at 3 p.m., Sunday with Rufe Higgins and Clayton Gribble officiating, and burial was in Gardens of Memory. A native of Livingston, he was born Oct. 7, 1922, and was the son of George Frank Gillentine and Cora Christian Gillentine. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of the Church of Christ. He was single. He leaves four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Hartrick of Del Rio, Texas, Mrs. Pearl Fazehas, of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Bessie Cook of Nashville, and Mrs. Ruth Watson Brown of Viola and one brother, Bill Gillentine of Cookeville. GRIBBLE, Willie Mae Jaco (circa 1918-1998)McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Willie Mae (Bill) Jaco Gribble, 80, died May 21 at Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville after an extended illness. A retired seamstress with Levi Strauss and a member of Northside Baptist Church, she was the daughter of John Henry and Minnie Hash Witt, and was preceded in death by her husband, W.T. Gribble; one daughter, Jimmie Grace Jaco; one son, Johnny David Jaco; half-sister, Margie Hale; half-brother, Charlie Lee Acuff; and brother John Bluford Witt. She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Marlow Bouldin of Red Oak, Texas; five grandchildren, Gina Marlowe Maxwell, Scott Marlowe, Randy Jaco, and Monty Jaco, all of McMinnville, and Vickie Jaco Martin of Murfreesboro; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for former Warren County Sheriff, A. E. (Doc) Grissom, 79, 106 Edison Street, will be held at 2 p.m. today at East End Church of Christ with John High, Rufe Higgins and Tim Lavender officiating. Burial will be in Long Cemetery in Van Buren County. Mr. Grissom died Monday in Warren County General Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Van Buren County, Mr. Grissom was married to Dovie Alice Myers Grissom who survives, and was the son of the late James Phillip and Lou Simmons Grissom. Sheriff of Warren County from 1960 to 1964, Mr. Grissom also served on the McMinnville Police Department and as chief of police. Other survivors include two sons, Gerald Grissom of Charleston, S.C., and Gordon Grissom of Bone Cave; two daughters, Mrs. Nina Turner and Mrs. Jo Ann Moore both of McMinnville; two brothers, Herod Grissom and Lee Grissom, both of Van Buren County; one sister, Mrs. Belle Johnson of McMinnville; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. GRISSOM, Alfred Elisha (1887-1952)Retired Farmer Dies In Hospital
Alfred Elisha Grissom, retired Van Buren county farmer, died at Medical Clinic Saturday morning at 9 o'clock. Ill for a week, Mr. Grissom was 75 years of age. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Spencer Church of Christ. Newton Gribble, the minister officiated and burial was in Long cemetery. Mr. Grissom was a native of Van Buren county, born May 21, 1887. He was a son of Easu Grissom and Permelia Johnson Grissom and he was married to Miss Sallie Yates, in 1912. She survives. He was a member of the Church of Christ. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Shurl Hunter, Sparta, and Miss Maude Grissom, Spencer, one son, Woodrow Grissom, Murfreesboro, and one sister, Mrs. Lucian Delon, Spencer. GRISSOM, Dovie Alice Myers (1909 - 1980)Mrs. Dovie Alice Grissom, 71-year old resident of 106 Edison Street here, died of a brief illness in Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday. A native of Warren County and member of the Church of Christ, she was wed Dec. 24, 1924 to A. E. (Doc) Grissom who preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1979. Her late husband served as both Warren County Sheriff and McMinnville Chief of Police for several years. She was a daughter of the late Albert and Myrtle Grissom Myers. Survivors include two sons and two daughters, Gerald Grissom of Charleston, SC; Gordon Grissom of Bone Cave; Mrs. Nina Turner and Mrs. Jo Ann Moore, both of McMinnville; a brother, Charlie Myers of Bone Cave; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild. With Tim Lavender, Steve Short and John High the officiants, last rites were held in East End Church of Christ at 10 a.m. Saturday with interment in Long Cemetery in Van Buren County. E.J. Grissom, 54-year-old retired employee of the Van Buren County Highway Department, died of an extended illness at his Mountain Route, Spencer residence at 6 a.m. Tuesday. A native of Van Buren County, he was the son of the late Ambros Smith Grissom and of Mrs. Minnie Jennings Grissom of Spencer. Mr. Grissom, who was single, is also survived by three brothers and a sister, Lowell and Edward Grissom of Spencer, Glenn Grissom of Campaign and Mrs. Elizabeth Boles of Doyle. The body will be in state at High's parlors at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Freddie Savage will conduct service in High's Chapel, the funeral home in charge, at 1 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services were today at 2 p.m. in Love-Cantrell Chapel with Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Burial was in Long Cemetery in Van Buren County. A native of Van Buren County, Mr. Grissom was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Clark Grissom. A son of the late Phillip and Lou Simmons Grissom, he was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Land, Mrs. Elizabeth Hillis, Bone Cave, and Mrs. Maxine Sweeney, Lincoln Park, Mich., and three sons, Teron Grissom, McMinnville, Clark Grissom, Brevard, N.C., and Jimmy Grissom, Muncie, Ind. Route 1, Rock Island resident and Delphi, Ind. native Freddie Grissom, 47, died suddenly May 7 at River Park Hospital of an apparent heart attack. A veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and a carpenter with the Elaine Rains Construction Co., he was the son of Sally Lourine Hillis Grissom of Bone Cave and the late Ivon Grissom. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Hillis Grissom; two sons, Robert Jason and Tracy Darrin Grissom of Bone Cave; one daughter, Samantha Lourine Dover of Doyle; two step-sons, Mark Whitworth and Robbie Hillis of McMinnville; one step-daughter, Kimberly Tyler of McMinnville; and one brother, Austin Grissom of Rock Island; two sisters, Zora Hillis of Rock River and Evelyn Powers of McMinnville; one granddaughter and five step-grandchildren. Long-time school board member George Burton Grissom, 88, died Feb 4 at River Park Hospital after a week-long illness. Mrs. Grissom served on the Warren County School board for 16 years. An elder of the Campaign Church of Christ from 1952-89 and a member of the Rock Island Masonic Lodge F&AM #452, he was a retired construction manager for J.R. Walker. A Campaign resident and Van Buren County native, he was the son of the late John Alexander and Laura Hillis Grissom and was preceded in death by one son, George Burton Grissom Jr., in 1947. He is survived by his wife, Clara Caldwell Grissom; two daughters, Catherine Grissom of Oak Ridge and Martha Wattenburger of Cleveland; two sons, John C. Grissom of Brentwood and Burton Grissom of Campaign; three grandchildren, Lis Grissom of Texas and Jamie and Stephanie Grissom of Campaign; and one brother, Mason Grissom of Campaign. Gerald S. Grissom succumbed to an extended illness Sunday at his Charleston, S.C. home He was 58 yers of age. A native of Van Buren County, he was the son of the A.E. "Doc" and Alice Myers Grissom and the husband of Lynn Boyer Grissom, who survives. Mr. Grissom was retired from the United States Air Force. Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Long Cemetery in Van Buren County. Military grave rites will be performed by VFW Post 5074 and American Legion 173. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughter, Deborah Grissom and Julie Ledford, both of Charleston; two sons, Gary and Daniel Grissom, both of Charleston; two sisters, Nina Turner and Joann Tate, both of McMinnville; one brother, Gordon E. GRISSOM, Havron Bryan (1897 - 1968)Havron B. Grissom, brother of former Warren County Sheriff, and McMinnville Police Chief, A. E. (Doc) Grissom, died Thursday in Cookeville General Hospital. He was 71 years of age and death came suddenly. A member of the Church of Christ, he was a resident of the Bone Cave community, but had been living with his son in Baxter. He became ill there. Funeral services for the World War I veteran were held Saturday in High's Chapel, with Bro. Paul Killom and John W. High officiating. Burial was in Long Cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Curtis Herriman, Route 1, Rock Island; one son, Lowell Grissom, Baxter; four brothers, Ernest and Lee Grissom, Bone Cave; A. E. GRISSOM, Lou Caroline Simmons (1868 - 1943)GRISSOM - Mrs. Lou Caroline Grissom, 75, widow of the late J. Phillip Grissom, died at her home at Laurelburg in Van Buren County at 2:15 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The funeral and burial was held at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Long Cemetery. The services were conducted by John W. High. Mrs. Grissom, a daughter of the late William and Mary Stipe Simmons, was born in Van Buren county April 5, 1868. GRISSOM, Lowell (circa 1928 -1996)Lowell Grissom
Spencer resident and Van Buren County native Lowell Grissom, 68, died Jan. 26 at Sparta Health Care after an extended illness. A truck driver and a member of the Church of Christ, he was the son of Minnie Jennings Grissom of Spencer and the late Ambrose Grissom. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Lee Madewell Grissom, three sons, Jimmy Lowell, Billy Joe and Jerry Lee Grissom, all of Spencer; one sister, Elizabeth Boles of Doyle; two brothers, Edd Grissom of Spencer and Glen Grissom of McMinnville, 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel with Olen Mooneyham officiating. Burial will follow at Shockley Cemetery. Mrs. Mary E. Grissom, 89-year-old retired educator of Route 1, Rock Island succumbed to a 10-day illness in Warren County General Hospital at 3:45 a.m. Saturday. A native of this county and member of the Church of Christ, she was an educator for 45 years in Warren and Van Buren Counties and was a member of the Retired Teachers and Senior Citizens Association. A daughter of the late William S. and Margaret Campen Galloway, she was married to Walter A. (Jim Buck) Grissom who preceded her in death in 1944. Survivors include a daughter and three sons, Mrs. Emma Hitchcock of Rock Island, Walter A. Grissom of Willoughby, Ohio; William Joes Grissom of McMinnville and John Byrd Grissom of Nashville as well as 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. John W. High and Bishop Cordell H. GRISSOM, Melvina Faye Miller (circa 1921-1987)Campaign resident Mrs. Melvina Faye Grissom, 46, succumbed to a short illness Tuesday in River Park Hospital. A member of the Church of Christ and native of Van Buren County, she was a machine operator at Turner Sporting Goods. The wife of James Glenn Grissom, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Miller and of Mrs. Nanna Lee Miller of Spencer. Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by sons Wayne and Randy Grissom, daughters Kendra Alice Grissom and Glenda Cox, all of Campaign, brothers Billy and Bob Miller of Spencer, and four grandchildren. Gene Brock conducted services in the chapel of High Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Thursday. Interment was in Long Cemetery in Van Buren County.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Minnie Lillian Grissom, 54, who died at Medical Clinic Sunday at 9:40 a.m. were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Campaign Church of Christ. Joe D. Gray, minister of Bybees' Branch Church of Christ, and John W. High officiated and burial was in Long cemetery. Mrs. Grissom, wife of H.B. Grissom, died following an illness of six weeks. She was a native of Van Buren county, born May 12, 1899. She was a daughter of the late W.M. Templeton and Mrs. Matilda Grissom Templeton and she was married to Mr. Grissom December 26, 1919. Mrs. Grissom was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband, mother; one son, Lowell Grissom, McMinnville; one daughter Miss Gleta Jo Grissom, Baxter; four brothers, Claude and Cooper Templeton, Bone Cave, Clyde and Charlie Templeton, Gadsden, Ala. Murfreesboro resident and White County native Oliver Pershing Grissom, 65, died Feb. 2 at North Texas Medical Center in McKinney, Texas after an extended illness. A veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he was retired from the Navy and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Murfreesboro. The son of Oliver Buchanan and Dovie Jane Walker Grissom, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Miller Grissom in 1990. He is survived by one daughter, Reanita Lyneece Davis of Kingsland, Ga.; three sons, Shelby Ray Grissom of Meridian, Miss., Jackie Clay Grissom of Allen, Texas and Myron Oliver of Pensacola Fla., one brother Jaes Grissom of McMinnville; and three grandchildren, Rachel Davis and Danille and Ramsey Grissom. Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel with Neal Glass officiating. Burial will follow at Long Cemetery in Van Buren County with military graveside rites to be administered by the Ft. GRISSOM, Phillip Lee (1908 - 1991)Route 1, Bone Cave resident and Van Buren County native, Phillip Lee Grissom, 83, died March 4 after a week-long illness. A farmer and TVA machine maintenance employee and member of the Laurel Creek Baptist Church, he was the son of James Phillip Grissom and Louisa Carolina Simmons Grissom. Mr. Grissom is survived by his wife, Velma Simons Grissom; four sons, James Lloyd Grissom of Tullahoma; David Lee Grissom of Loudon; Paul Douglas and Joel Thomas Grissom, both of McMinnville; and three daughters, Loretta Eastman of Chattanooga; Bonnie Mosley of Bone Cave; and Ruby Gooch of McMinnville. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements had not been announced at press-time. Burial will occur at Long Cemetery in Van Buren County. McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Theron Conard Grissom, 80, died unexpectedly Jan 21 at Columbia River Park emergency room. A retired employee of Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper Bottling companies and a deacon for Long Mountain Baptist Church, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 173 and the Warren County Rescue Squad. The son of Ernest T. and Nancy Ann Clark Grissom, he was preceded in death by one son, Trence Grissom in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Hillis Grissom; two sons, Douglas Wayne and Marshall Eugene Grissom, both of McMinnville; two daughters, Ruth Lyle and Helen Lance, both of McMinnville; two brothers, Clark Grissom of McMinnville and J.B. Grissom of Muncie, Ind.; three sisters, Maxine Sweeney of McMinnville, Elizabeth Hillis of Bone Cave and Mattie Land of Dunlap; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchild. GRISSOM, William Herod (1887 - 1982)William Herod Grissom, 95-year old retired farmer, died of a lingering illness at his Mountain Route, Spencer residence at 5:30 a.m. Monday. The Van Buren County native was married to the former Dora Measles who preceded him in death Feb. 22, 1981. A member of the Baptist Church, he was a son of the late Phillip and Lou Simmons Grissom. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Kathleen Barnes of Spencer and Mrs. Sue Roberts of McMinnville; two grandchildren, Mrs. Shelby Jean Mills of this city and Eddie Barnes of Florida; a sister and two brothers, Mrs. Belle Johnson of McMinnville, Lee Grissom of Bone Cave and Carl Johnson of Nashville as well as four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lydia Evelyn Grove, 76, widow of R.L. Grove, well known Warren county farmer, died at her home in the Dark Hollow Community of the fifth district Sunday afternoon at 2:45 o’clock. She had been ill five weeks. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at Crain Hill Church of Christ. J.R. Bailey, minister of Rockliff Church of Christ, and John W. High officiated and burial was in the Crain Hill cemetery. Mrs. Grove was a native of Warren county, born January 15, 1877. She was a daughter of Robert Oliver Hillis and Elizabeth Clark Hillis and she was a member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by one son, Smith Grove; two daughters, Mrs. Abe Curtis and Mrs. Woodrow Martin; three sisters, Mrs. Dema Johnson, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones and Mrs. George Smith, and one brother, John C. A homemaker and member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of Coy and Viola Hillis and was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Clifton Groves, in 1978.
