ADDRESS: 501 Fishery Church Road, Erwin, TN

LEFT PHOTO: Macro view of the cemetery and church taken Sept 13,
2008, by bbpytel.
HISTORY:
Originally called The Fishery
Church (pictured on left), the chapel was established in 1906 as a nondenominational house of
worship. The land upon which the church and cemetery rest was donated by
two brothers, Robert Tapp and Thomas M. Tapp [#364a] with
a stipulation in the deed that the property be used for worship, education or other
activities that will enhance the community. The timber used to build the
original church came from the "Dark Hollow" section of the Unaka Mountains
including hardwoods of Hickory, Maple Oak, Cherry, Beech. The one room
structure had a wood stove in the center for heating and kerosene lanterns on
the walls and ceiling for lighting. The trustees from diverse faiths who
oversaw the construction were: Henry Banner, Alexander Jones, Robert and
Thomas Tapp and Jacob Woodward; three were Christian, one Methodist and one
Baptist. The church lived up to its promise serving as a house of worship,
a place for education and a polling station for voting. Rev. Frank Tittle
(in adjacent photo), a Methodist Circuit Minister for Washington and Carter Co.,
Tennessee, was the first to hold a service and continued services once
a month allowing for other ministers of various denominations (i.e. Baptist, Christian, Holiness, Free Will) to preach such as: Roy Brown, J. W.
Colbert, I. G. Crowder, Rev. February, Pastor Fischer, Ms. Fannie Garber,
Michael Hutson, Robert Kagen, Harry Leonard, Roy Lingerfelt, Leno Lyle, Francis
Radford, George Richardson, Ms. Silvers, Rev. Shemp, Rev. Trent, Rev.
Vandergriff, Rev. David White. Wade Ambrose (plot #5a) was a long
term trustee and in 1934 oversaw a major endeavor to have a basement installed
under the church which required blasting through limestone rock. Other
improvements through the years included: in 1956 adding rooms to the front and
back for Sunday school and a church office; 1968 installing indoor plumbing for
bathrooms; 1979 construction of a two story fellowship hall; 1992 modernizing
the HVAC system. Other notable Trustees were: Doug Allen, Harley
Allen, Clyde Brown, Alvin Haun, H. A. Jones, Grady Ledford, Sye Lyle, Ike Tapp,
Larry Tittle, Ronald Webb. In the early 1960s, Reverends Bob Ambler, Bill
Booth, and Alvin Hinkle alternated Sunday services. In 1967, Pastor Bill Booth
was voted in as a full time preacher and served through September 1970 when he
retired to be replaced by Pastor Bob Ambler. Known as "Uncle Bob" for his
dedicated outreach to children, Pastor Ambler served until July 1986. Rev.
David R. Lyle was his replacement and continued his pastoral duties in the
tradition of his predecessor.

Many
of Erwin's (Greasy Cove) early settlers are interred here (see section
III.) Part of the graveyard used to be the Brown Family Cemetery
[see plot #259], however, over time, it became the Fishery Union
Cemetery. This area was formally known as Swinglesville during the
1880 census, but after the establishment of the
Erwin National Fish Hatchery
in 1906, the area and church were referred as "Fishery". This is
an active cemetery and well taken care of. There are numerous
unmarked graves based on death certificates which I have placed in
familiar relationships based on available information. Birth or death
dates may differ from death certificates. When you arrive at the
cemetery, do check out the info box (left photo) which has a roster of
the interred with a corresponding map.
Email me if you have any questions/corrections
or would like your photos/info posted.
I give special thanks to the late J. Harold Rice (1945-2019 plot
1c), the former caretaker of the
cemetery who contributed information and updates for this site for
several years.
The initial survey was conducted on Sept. 13, 2008. I provide
continual updates to this page.

NOTE: BIO ~by B. Bradford updated 2-29-2020
Martha Patty Harris was 8th child of Jason L. Harris and Nancy Hensley, born on
their farm in Higgins Creek area of Flag Pond, Tennessee. In the 1860 Washington
Co., TN Census, Flag Pond area, HH #1045, she was noted as "Martha" age 9. The
Civil War broke out and Patty was 14 years old when her father died in a POW
camp in Asheville. She helped her widow mother Nancy with raising her younger
siblings William F., Manerva, Jason C., Deadrick and Nathan D. Patty continued
living with her mother and siblings in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Flag
Pond, TN. Sometime around 1885, Patty developed a relationship with Andrew King
who lived nearby in the household of Andrew Crain and Lydia working as a
laborer. Patty became pregnant with her only child James who was born in 1886.
She was 13 years his senior. They never married and Patty continued living with
her aged mother taking care her and raising James on her own. After the death of
her widowed mother sometime in 1893, Patty, her son and brother David lived
together in Flag Pond as noted in the 1900 Unicoi Co., TN Census, HH #15. They
were both noted "single". I could not find David or Patty on the 1920 Census. In
the 1930 Unicoi Co., TN Census, Patty was age 65 living in her son's household
#183 in the Fishery area on the northside of Erwin. James married to Bessie
Coffey and had 3 children at the time: Belle, Joanna and Fred. The family lived
next door to George Tapp on one side and William A. McInturff on the other. A
year later, Patty died. Her death certificate stated she was buried at the
Fishery Cemetery and her plot is unmarked. Her son James is also buried in
an unmarked grave at Fishery.

NOTE: * Per the writings of her son, DJ, he
states Margaret died in 1854 shortly after her father died. It is
unknown of the name of Margaret's husband or companion and there is no mention of
a father's name on any of her 5 children's death certificates. In the 1840
Washington Co., TN census, it is most likely she and her daughter Mary Ann (age
1) and DJ (just born) were living with her older sister Mary White-Honeycutt and
family as the age groups make a good fit. She is not found in the 1850
census for Washington Co., TN nor the adjacent counties. It's presumed she
is living in Washington Co. because her daughter Phoebe was just born.
Margaret's widowed father age 80, was noted in the Washington Co., TN 1850
census living with his children from his first and second marriages. Margaret
somehow became acquainted with the wealthy plantation owner Rev. and Dr.
Alexander Nelson Harris who lived about 12 miles north from Greasy Cove on
Little Cherokee River outside of Jonesboro. In 1854 shortly before she
died, she allowed DJ to live with him and be "bounded" to him until he was 21. She
died in 1854 and he moves on the Harris Plantation in February 1855.
Her stone is at the foot of the tree which was placed by descendant Brenda

WHITE, David Jonathan "DJ"
b. January 15, 1840 - d. June 10, 1928
[s/o unknown and Margaret White #267;
married Martha Garland on
Dec. 24, 1873]
MINI BIO: "DJ" White was prominent county
surveyor who helped define the official boundaries of Unicoi County. David
(known as DJ) was born on January 15, 1840, in the Greasy Cove area of Old
Washington Co., [now Unicoi], Tennessee. He was the son of Margaret White and
[unknown father] and the grandson of John White [b.1771] and his first wife,
Margaret Odell [1785] of the Greasy Cove area on the Indian Creek, Washington
Co., TN. DJ's mother, Margaret, was a widow in 1850 and she and her children
resumed her maiden name. Times were hard and Margaret struggled to raise 5
children on her own. Margaret
agreed that DJ [age 14] move to Jonesborough to live on the Harris plantation.
On February 5, 1855, at age 14, DJ moves in with the Harris'. The Harris' were a well to do family with a huge tract of land with a staff of
servants and slaves. Dr. Alexander Nelson Harris [s/o Rev. War veteran Benjamin
Harris and Jane Crampton] was a physician and Methodist minister and had a son named Nathaniel
Edwin Harris [who later became the Governor of Georgia from 1915-1917 and
founder of GA Tech University]. He was 6 years younger than DJ. Nathaniel writes
in his autobiography that his father worked out an arrangement with widow
Margaret to raise and educate DJ as if he were officially bound to him in
accordance to State law. He also agreed, that at the age of 21, DJ would receive
a horse, furniture and other household items of his choice to get him started on
his own. Living with the Harris' for 6 1/2 years, DJ played a major role and
influence in Nathaniel's life. In addition to being a voracious reader and quick
study, DJ would also work on the plantation along with the staff. Nathaniel
writes in his memoirs, "DJ awoke within me the ambition to succeed which
followed me the remainder of my days." When DJ left the plantation on or about
1862, the Civil War was manifesting; the Harris' were Confederate sympathizers.
During the war, DJ was conscripted for 15 months through April 1864 to work at
the Embreeville Iron mine (also known as the Confederate Iron Works) that was
purchased by General Duff Green. This ore was
used for confederate cannon balls.
After the war, he traveled to Indiana for a time where his sister lived, and
then returned to his hometown serving as a school teacher. After 1870, he became
a surveyor for Washington County. In 1875, Unicoi County was carved out of
Washington and Carter counties and DJ played a major role in the layout of Erwin
and defining the
official county boundaries and NC - TN state lines. DJ owned a farm in the
Fishery area of Unicoi Co. Later in life, he became county Magistrate
adjudicating marriages and a traveling Methodist Preacher. On December 25, 1873,
DJ married Martha C. Garland [d/o Hampton Crissenberry Garland and Jane
Elizabeth Burleson of Red Hill, Mitchell Co., NC]. DJ and Martha had 8 children;
he and Martha are buried in Fishery Union Church Cemetery, Unicoi Co., TN next
to his mother Margaret White. DJ kept many journals of his work and life
experiences. He craved knowledge and spent a lifetime learning. He said, "Books
became an idol to me. I esteemed time as precious." ---bbpytel

Vincent
Co. A., 3rd NC Mounted Infantry, Union Army
b. October
29, 1841 - d. May 3, 1911
[s/o John Tapp and Mary "Polly" Clouse]
NOTES: Vincent married 1st Rachel Caroline
Ambrose on Dec. 31, 1871 Washington Co., TN; d/o James Henry Ambrose and Rhonda Tilson. She was a widow who was first married James Tittle (1841-1863).
Her marriage record to Vincent was under the name "Caroline Tittle". Their child
was Martha Edna Tapp-Miller.
married 2nd Sadie
White #284 on Aug. 19, 1893, Unicoi Co., TN.
On Dec. 1, 1864, he volunteered for Co. H, 3rd NC Mnt Infantry at Embreeville,
Wash. Co., TN, witnessed by John W. Edwards; served 3 years in the Union Army.
On April 1, 1865, he was transferred to Co. A. serving as Provost Guard under
Capt. Hargrave and John W. Edwards. He was discharged on August 8, 1965;
military record described him as having red hair, blue eyes, 5'7".
His unit was based out of Knoxville, TN. During the winter of 1865, on a
march from TN to NC via Stoneman Road, he contracted severe rheumatism due
to wading in waters for long periods of time. On June 4, 1880, his
address was Jonesboro, TN and declared a Pension for his military service
stating he was 39. By 1910, his rheumatism became worse to the point of
being confined to a bed and appealed for an increase in his pension.
According to his son-in-law/neighbor, Jonathan N. Hicks, who attested for Vincent's
increase pension application of Oct. 29, 1910, Vincent had very little use of
his arms and legs, shortness of breath, would often fall down and in constant
care of a nurse. Effective July 10, 1911, after the death of Vincent,
Sadie received $12/month, Pension #726002 up through her death.

b. abt. 1848 - d. April 20, 1915
[d/o unknown and Margaret
White #267; she was partners first with James Eurasmus Click; daughter Julian Ann White.
w/o Vincent Tapp #289 -
married August 19, 1893; child: Frank F. Tapp; Sada is also the mother of Mollie White]
NOTE: Unicoi Co. Death Cert #480 - died of
"Pneumonia" at age 67 years; widow; Informant brother David J. White; buried in
"Fishery Cem."
Sada married Civil War Veteran,
Vincent Tapp, on August 19, 1893, in Unicoi Co., Tennessee. Before
she married Vincent, she had two daughters out of wedlock.
Her first was Mollie Click born in 1862 (father is noted as "Roy Click"
on death cert) and Mollie married Robert A. Hampton. The second
daughter was Julia Ann through a brief relationship with James Erasmus "Ras"
Click. Julia married Jonathan Nathan Hicks and they lived nearby to help
take care of Sada and Vincent. In 1910, Vincent’s health was
declining fast, bed ridden and thus applied (with the assistance of
Jonathan Hicks) to the pension board for an increase in pay. In October
of 1910, Jonathan offered testimony as a witness to the Pension Board of
his wife's stepfather's poor health and in need of constant care of a
nurse to support the application for an increase. Vincent died on May 3,
1911, at which time Sada received a widow’s pension of $12 a month. In
1913, Sada transferred her assets over to Jonathan most likely as
payment for his help with the pension board and the added expense of
nursing care provided by her daughter/ his wife. On April 20, 1915, Sada
died of pneumonia and was dropped from the pension. On May 3, 1915,
Jonathan Hicks requested from the Pension board reimbursement for burial
expenses and provided sworn testimony that Sada had no child under 16,
left no property or money and that she gave her property over to her
children two years ago (around 1913).

b. November 19, 1941 - d. August 21, 2023
OBITUARY: "Bob Lesher, an 81 year old
man known for his unwavering faith in God and in the Acts 2:38 message, he had a
great sense of humor, a strong work ethic and the greatest smile. He passed away
peacefully at his home on Monday, August 21 with several of his family at his
side. Born on November 19, 1941, he was the beloved husband of Mary Ruth,
a father, papaw and great grandpa to many. As well as a friend and a source of
encouragement to everyone he met. Bob lived a life with devotion to his
Church "Experience of Pentecost" in Elizabethton, TN. where he worked on many
building projects. Anything asked of him, he would make it happen, whether it be
a plumbing job, or painting an entire sanctuary single handedly at Harvestime
Apostolic Church, in Erwin, TN. Bob was a handyman in Erwin, TN for nearly
35 years. His handprint is on many projects in the town of Erwin. Oftentimes he
would do the work at his cost or for free, if he knew that the client he was
working for had few resources. He was a generous man in so many ways. He was a
passionate gardener and loved fishing; he loved to feed his birds and was always
on top of keeping the bird feeders full. He was often found driving around Erwin
or walking the Erwin Nature Trail with his Boston Terrier named Bo II...."
