The
Clear Branch Baptist Church was named after a stream nearby that always
flowed "clear". It was founded on February 11, 1870 with the following 18
charter members: M. J. Brown, William Brown, Catherine
Brown, Cassia Clouse, Thomas Clouse, Sarah Clouse, G. W. Clouse, J. T.
Clouse, Mary A. Jones, M. J. Rice, W. A. Sams, Sarah E. Sams, J. A.
Tilson, Rebecca Tilson, J. S. Tilson, Margaret Tilson, Eliza J. Tilson, M.
C. Tilson.
Rev. Henry W. Gilbert was the first pastor and is interred here
[#137a.] The original chapel was a small log structure
near where the present day white brick building sits. Inside was a
fireplace for heating and split log benches with no back for seating.
Shortly after formation, a larger building was required to accommodate the
growing congregation and to also serve as a schoolhouse. Records
show that about 120 folks attended service on average between 1870-1900.
Around 1912, a third building was erected to include beautiful wood carved
pews crafted by fellow member George Tompkins, electricity, indoor
plumbing, stain glass windows, a Baptistery and bells to call folks to
church. For support, the church initially joined the French Broad
Association but in 1894, it transferred over to the Holston Baptist
Association of Tennessee along with other nearby churches: Coffee Ridge (1920), Higgins Chapel (1926) and Falls Gap (1894) on
Spivey. The Clear Branch Church is still a member of the association.
