White Cake

(From Clara Mitchells' cookbook)

6 egg whites

3/4 cup butter or shortening

3 cups flour, sifted before measuring

2 cups sugar, sifted

1 cup sweet milk

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and sugar together. Add flour and baking powder alternately with milk. Add stiffly beaten egg whites lastly. Bake in well greased loaf pan in a slow oven for about 1 hour. If desired, add 1 1/2 cups hickory or walnuts to above recipe.
