1850 Scott County Slave Census – People of Color in Tennessee History

The Scott County record is unique, because the enumerator seems to have included the given names of each slave.

To create the searchable table below, enslavers’ surnames are indicated in square brackets ([]) for each enslaved person. This is simply a data configuration device and does not mean the enslaved individual used that surname after emancipation or manumission.

Page = number of original schedule page
HW = handwritten page number
Line = line number on original page, indicating left (L) or right (R) set of columns on page (each “page” was two sheets)
Last Name and First Name = identity of enslaver
# = number of slaves with the age, sex, and color (usually 1)
Age = age as known to enslaver
Sex = male or female
Color = racial mix as known to enslaver
From = state (location) from which slave was a fugitive
Free = whether free or manumitted
Deaf/Blind/Dumb = self-explanatory
Slave houses = number of dwellings for slaves on enslaver’s property
