Albert Sidney Johnston Smith, 79-year-old resident of Memphis who lived in
Tipton county until 17 years ago, died at 1 a.m. Sunday after an extended
illness. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Maley Funeral
Home by Dr. Robert G. Lee of Memphis, assisted by Rev. Preston L. Ramsey
and Rev. J.H. Turner, and burial was in Munford Cemetery. Mr. Smith, a retired
furniture salesman, was born near Covington in 1860, and was engaged in farming
and the mercantile business before moving to Memphis. He was a member of
the Baptist church, having served as a deacon for more than 40 years, and
had served as superintendent of several Baptist Sunday Schools. He leaves
a son, Rev. Egbert Thurston Smith of Shamrock, Texas, and six daughters,
Mrs. C. Marvin Applebury of Memphis, Mrs. Reuben Ermon Smith of Brighton,
and Mrs. Essie Campbell, Mrs. Martin Adkinson, Miss Gertie Smith, and Mrs.
Ernest Archer, all of Memphis.His grandsons acted as pallbearers at the funeral.
They were: Solon W. Smith of Memphis, Oliver Smith of Covington, Dr.Samuel
Wardlow Campbell of Covington, Harold Smith of Shamrock, Texas, and Royce
Applebury and Charles J. Perry of Memphis.
