5 & 10 CENT STORE COMING---B.B.OVERALL completed a lease yesterday which brings a new enterprise to Covington.W.E.HARLAN,operator of a number of 5,10,and 25 cent stores; has aquired the Paine Pool Room building on a long term lease.

BABY BURIED MONDAY---The infant son of Mr.& Mrs.R.O.JOBE of District #12 died Sunday as a result of an attack of whooping cough,followed by pneumonia.Funeral services were conducted Monday morning by Rev.J E MILES.Interment occurring in Munford Cemetery.

LOCALS---Mrs.W L McCULLOUGH is again on duty at Guttman's after a vacation of several weeks. Miss Vivian TAYLOR of Mason,is guest of Mrs.J H FLOWERS,Sr.,of this city this week.Miss TAYLOR was a Byars-Hall graduate of the 1931 class. Assistant Attorney General Nat TIPTON and Miss TIPTON,of Nashville,arrived Sunday and will be guests of relatives here for the next ten days.

AGED CITIZEN IS BURIED AT SHILOH CEMETERY---Mr.G.Frank PINNER,aged 80 years,11 months and 9 days,died at his Garland residence Sunday evening.Death was due principally to the infirmities of old age,he being unable to rally from a recent illness.Funeral services were held at Kelly's Chapel Monday afternoon.Rev.G.W.TRACEY was in charge of services;being assisted by Rev.STOKES of Curve and Rev.W.C.THARP of Garland.Interment in Shiloh Cemetery.Born and reared in this county,Mr.PINNER was in business at Drummonds,at Gift,and on the site og Hogan's store during earlier manhood,where he has since resided with his wife.She is his only survivor,except one brother,Jim PINNER,of Memphis.

DOUBLE BIRTHDAY PARTY---Little Miss Lucille BUCEY and her brother,Edward,gave a birthday party Wednesday to a large number of their little friends.The occasion was the young lady's 12th birthday and the 6th birthday of her brother.

THE SICK THIS WEEK---Mr.R.S.McDOW,of this city,who sustained severe injuries to a foot and ankle when struck by an auto some weeks since is again able to be up town. Martha Louise,small daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Gavin McCLANAHAN,of Gainsville,is being treated in Baptist hospital,Memphis,for typhoid fever. Mrs.S.S.DENNIS,of this city,was permitted to return home Monday,she recently underwent surgery in a Memphis hospital. Mrs.R.D.JENKINS,of Ripley,is at home after being treated some weeks in a Murfreesboro hospital for injuries sustained in an auto accident.Mrs.JENKINS is the mother-in-law of Mrs.James JENKINS of Ripley,formerly Miss Martha LOWANHAUGHT,of this city. City Recorder James J.MILLER,now convalescing after suffering from an unusually severe cold.His assistant,Mrs.Gladys COX,has remained continually in his office during his absence. Miss Hazel HUNT,daughter of Mrs.Annie Laura HUNT,is again home in this city and recovering from an operation for appendicitis. Mrs.Johnnie ALSTON is improving after receiving treatment in a Memphis hospital. Mr.W.H.BAILEY underwent emergency operation for removal of his appendix at the Baptist hospital,Memphis. Mrs.W.B.DOUGHERTY,of McCRORY,Ark.,is stilled confined to her bed after a long illness.She is known here,where she has been the guest of the family of C.E.LACKEY.

BRIGHTON NEWS---Mrs.Lula JAMISON,and daughter,Clemmie,of Clinton,SC are the guests of Mrs.W.S.DeWese and family. Mr.& Mrs.H.C.CARPENTER of Memphis,were the guests of Mr.& Mrs.A.L.TANNER Sunday. Mr.& Mrs.Safford McLISTER and daughter,of Memphis,were weekend guests of relatives here. Mr.J.B.MOFFATT of Rosemark,is suffering from an infected foot. Misses Frances & Annie Laura HART,of Trenton,are guests of Misses Ada Rose & Willie B.HINDMAN. Rev.& Mrs.Ross LYNN,of Clinton,SC,are visting relatives here. Misses Alice & Hannah SMITH and Effie MARSHALL are guests of Mrs.Otway DICKEY of Holly Grove. Mr.& Mrs.O.L.TILLMAN were the guests of relatives at Rosemark Sunday.

MR.& MRS.J.R.TAYLOR---of Tullahoma,are guests of the latter's sister,Mrs.W.H.COBB,of this city.With them returned Billie COBB,small son of Mrs.COBB,who had been their guest for sometime.Mrs.TAYLOR is the former Miss Josie FARRAR,of this city.

CICERO's ORATION GIVEN,BUT NOT IN LATIN---Cicero CURLIN,colored,who resides on the McCALLA farm near Brighton,Had an argument with one Simon (not Peter)PAINE,also colored,a tenant on the WITHERINGTON farm Monday.Cicero did not rely on the Latin so eloquently used by his namesake,but put his trust in a shotgun in bringing home the bacon.He did. Simon,who luckily for himself,was some distance from CURLIN,received all of 27 pellets in the back of his head.Also luckily for Simon,his head was hard,the skull not having been penetrated.He is now recovering from the effects of a severe headache,while officers are on the lookout for Cicero,who showed a clean pair of heels immediately after the shooting.

LOCALS---Born Wednesday,July 20,to Mr.& Mrs.Bryson COOPER,of Garland,a daughter. Mr.& Mrs.Jake LOWENHAUPT are at home in an apartment in the C.O.McBRIDE residence on South Maple. Mrs.Allie HILL,of Mt.Carmel,addressed the women of the Rosemark Presbyterian Church Tuesday.She was accompanied by Mr.HILL,Mrs.Mary DUNAVANT and Mrs.Andrew DUNAVANT. Little Miss Rosella Hill,of Mt.Carmel,entertained a few of her friends Monday at the lovely country home of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.Allie HILL.

PICNIC GIVEN IN HONOR OF PROF.& MRS.POOLE.---The Southall Grove,one mile north of Covington,was the scene of perhaps the largest private picnic ever given in Tipton County,Tuesday,in honor of Prof.& Mrs.L.H.POOLE,who leave soon for Rutherford where Mr.& Mrs.POOLE have been retained on the faculty for the coming year.

OAKES & ANDERSON---Mr.& Mrs.Albert Sidney ANDERSON,of San Antonio,Texas,announce the marriage of their daughter,Mary Kathryn to Mr.Nathan Waller OAKES,of New York.The marriage occurring Thursday,July 21st,in San Antonio.

RAIN INFLICTS DAMAGE---A cloud burst accompanied by high winds hit the eastern section of the county from Tabernacl to Stanton Sunday afternoon.The gravel levee at Little Memphis was said to have been badly damaged.Two large trees fell in the W.M.RICHARDSON yard at Charleston,and L.E.SHOAF of near that place said there had never seen higher water on his bottom land.

COLORED FARMERS IN INSTITUTE AT JACKSON---Negro farmers of West Tennessee will hold their annual institute at the experiment station at Jackson July 29.Appearing on the program are H.S.NICHOLS,district agent; L.R.NEAL,superintendent of the Middle Tennessee experiment station; J.B.PIERCE,federal field agent; Dr.D.B.GRANBERRY of West Tenn.colored hospital; R.E.CLAY,state Rosenwald Agent.

CHARLESTON NOTES---Mesdames C.H.& J.H.DAVIS and the latter's daughter,Joy,are guests of relatives in Fort Worth & Dallas,Texas. Mr.Elmer FRIEDMAN is the guest of his sister,Mrs.J.W.KURTS,of Leigh's Chapel. Mr.& Mrs.G.E.DAVIS and children,George Miller & Trudy Ann of Newbern and Mrs.Frank WRIGHT of Dyersburg,were recent visitors in this community. Mrs.J.W.DAVIS and children,Lester,Jane & Stanley,of this vicinity and Miss Eurie WADDELL of Big Sandy,VA were weekend visitors in Memphis. GIVES BIRTHDAY PARTY---Little Gene CHAMBERLAIN entertained a number of friends at the home of an uncle,Lester CHAMBERLAIN Tuesday,the boy's 7th birthday.

MT.LEBANON NOTES---Mr.Floyd HILL was the guest of his mother,Mrs.Bob BRYANT at Mt.Carmel over the weekend. Mrs.R.M.CONAWAY is still confined to her room on account of illness. Linta Ann,infant daughter of Mr.& Mrs.S.J.HAZELRIG,is suffering with an attack of whooping cough. Miss Jewell GILBREATH is the guest of her sister,Mrs.Coy PEELER,of Rough Edge this week. Mrs.Myrtle BILLINGS and family of Flatwoods spent the weekend with relatives here. Mr.& Mrs.Pete McDIVITT left Sunday for a visit with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.ALLEN in Ark. Miss Margaret ARCHER,of Covington,is the guest of her sister,Mrs.Lucille BENNETT,of this community.

CHILD HIT BY AX---Arnold,two-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.J.A.STRICKLAND,of Solo,received a very painful wound on the head early Monday.The child was accidently struck with an ax by his grandfather,C.B.STRICKLAND,also of Solo.Medical attention was given and he is thought not to be seriously injured.

REV.L.D.HAMILTON IS BURIED AT DYERSBURG---former pastor of the First United Methodist Church of this city,died at the home of his daughter and her husband,Rev.& Mrs.G.H.BOYLES,of Houston,Miss.,Friday.Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Church,Dyersburg,interment there.Surviving are his widow; five children,Mrs.G.H.BOYLES,Houston,Miss.; Mrs.Ray FLOWERS,Columbus,Ky.;Mrs.Albert AJAX,Corinth,Miss.;Messrs.Wm.H.HAMILTON & Wilbur H.HAMILTON,of Chicago; two sisters,Misses Eva & Martha HAMILTON of Dyersburg and a brother,Rev.W.P.HAMILTON of Memphis.

AMONG THE COLORED FOLKS---Cupid BURRELL,well known colored citizen of Covington,died at his home on Freize Hill about 1:25 o'clock Saturday.He had been unable to work for a year preceding his death because of the infirmities of extreme old age.He was born in Virginia,coming to Tennessee before the Civil War.A wife, daughter and two sons survive.

NEGRO AMBUSHED--Henry WILSON,colored,who lived on the Dr.N.W.KELLY place below Mt.Carmel,was fatally shot last Thursday while seated in the yard of his home.A change from a shotgun struck him in the right shoulder and back of the head,inflecting instant death.

CHARGES AT DEPOT--Two changes in the personnel of the Illinois Central railroad have recently been made at the local depot.The job of warehouse clerk having been abilished,R.S.FARRIS goes to Ripley as cashier.J.B.HEFLIN is now assigned to the coal mining spur at Graham,Ky.,his place being taken by C.E.COCHRAN,formerly of the Mayfield Ky.office.

RESIDENCE PARTIALLY WRECKED BY LIGHTENING--The Will GWINN residence at Burlison was damaged Tuesday evening when a bolt of lightening entered the house by way of a radio arial.Boarding,both on the exterior and interior of the house was knocked loose by the force of the bolt,and the radio completely demolished.No one was injured.

NEGRO FOUND DEAD--A negro said to be named FITTS,a trusty at the jail,was found dead on the Illinois Central railroad tracks at Rialto Saturday morning.The body was decapitated,and it is supposed that he fell between the cars in attempting to board a passing freight train.

J.C.CHUMLEY BURIED HERE THIS MORNING--J.C.CHUMLEY,64,of the Mt.Carmel vicinity,died in Baptist hospital,Memphis,Tuesday evening.He had been ill but a few days,death resulting from infection which followed an insect bite.Funeral services were held at the residence.Besides his widow,he is survived by four sons and three daughters.

OVER 3,000 HEARD PATTERSON TUESDAY--Judge Malcolm R.PATTERSON spoke to a huge,orderly and very attentive audience in Covington Tuesday afternoon.Briefly,but with forceful comment upon his record,Hon.W.V.BRINGLE introduced Judge PATTERSON.Miss Margaret SIMONTON,lovely daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Claud SIMONTON,presented a beautiful basket of roses to Judge PATTERSON.Young Henry VAUGHN,son of Mr.& Mrs.Will VAUGHN,of this vicinity,placing in the Judge's outstretched hand a 30-pound country cured ham.The noted visitor,used as he is to the gift of flowers,most graciously accepted them,but was much moved when the freckled face boy timidly presented this ham.He placed his hands on the lad's head and pressed his lips to his forehead.

CANNON & SMITH--A wedding which was a surprise to her friends occurred Thursday,July 28th in Ripley,Miss.,Miss Jimmie Etta SMITH,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.M.SMITH,of the Gilt vicinity,became the bride of Mr.Robert G.CANNON,of San Antonio,Texas,Rev.H.R.TAYLOR officiating.The couple was accompanied by Miss Willie Raiford McCALL and Mr.Walker SMITH,of this city.The couple will make their home in Texas.

OAKES & ANDERSON--In an impressive ceremony Thursday evening July 21st,at the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio,Texas,Miss Mary Katherine ANDERSON,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Albert Sidney ANDERSON,became the bride of Nathan Waller OAKES of New York City,son of Mr.& Mrs.Herbert King OAKES,of Cleveland,Ohio.Rev.Wm.Fred GALBREAITH of Denton,a life-long friend of the bride's familt officiated.After a short program on the organ by Fred KING,Mrs.L.L.MARKS sang "At Dawning."Given by her father,in an ivory satin gown made along the princess line.Miss Martha ANDERSON,sister of the bride was her maid of honor.Little Miss Betty Vandever McCAMPBELL,of Austin,was junior bridesmaid.Herbert King OAKES,Jr.,of Cleveland was best man for his brother.Ushers were:Marvin BOWMAN,Richard JOHNSON, SAm WOLFORD, Donald GLASS, John GRIFFITH and Albert S.ANDERSON,Jr. A reception was held in the garden at the home of Mr.& Mrs.Wm.McINTOSH in Terrel Hills.

YOUNG MATRONS HONORED--The young people's class of the Garland Methodist Church entertained at the home of Mrs.L.WISEMAN of Burlison July 27th,to especially compliment Mrs.Laudel FLEMING and Mrs.John PROCTOR.Both of these young women were December brides.Mesdames Charles WHITEHORN and Aubrey PARR served punch.

ALVIE WOOLEY HONORED--Mrs.Minnie WOOLEY,of the Salem vicinity,entertained with a dinner July 29th to honor her son,Alvey WOOLEY on his birthday.Messrs.Ed KEEL,Travis MAPLES,Ben HARDIE and their families were guests.

TACKY PARTY GIVEN--Mr.& Mrs.W.C.DAVID entertained the younger set of Leigh's Chapel with a tacky party Friday.Prize winners were Miss Marie FAUGHT of Brighton & Mr.Ernest CARROLL of Leigh's Chapel.

SHARP & WEATHERLY--On Friday,July 22nd,in Fort Sanders Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m.occurred the marriage of Miss Dorothy Siler WEATHERLY,of Maryville and Mr.Alexander Joseph SHARP,of Covington,Rev.W.R.DAWSON officiating.The bride's sister,Miss Marjorie WEATHERLY presided at the organ.Mrs.SHARP is the son of Mr.Walter SHARP of Somerville.He is the head of the history department of Byars-Hall High School of this city.She is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.C.ENGLAND.The bride's relatives;the SILER,WEATHERLY & ARMFIELD families are among the pioneers of NC.

MISS DRAKE BRINGS CHEESE EXPERT HERE--G.M.TOBEY,assistant dairy specialist at the University of Tennessee Experiment Station at Knoxville,was a visitor in Covington the past week.On Tuesday an all-day meeting with picnic lunch was given on the J.L.LUTTRELL place,near Garland.On Wed.& Thurs. Miss Ivie DRAKE,home demonstrator attended meetings at the West Tenn Farmers & Homemakers'Institute.On Friday,Miss DRAKE gave a demo in canning at the home of Mrs.W.F.BURROUGH of Drummonds and again at the home of Mrs.G.P.FRENCH.

LITTLE MISS TARRY HONORED ON BIRTHDAY--On July 27th in her country home at Keeling,Mo.,Mrs.Edward TARRY gave her grand daughter,Katherine TARRY a party on her 11th birthday.Eighteen friends were present:Katherine,Martha Jane & Virginia ANDERSON,of Memphis; Elia,Laura Louise,& Ethel POINDEXTER,Imogene & Evelyn WILLIAMSON; Fannie Macklin WILLIAMSON; Cornelia HANLEY & Mildred STEWART; Messrs.J.W.& Clarence Tarry POINDEXTER;Wilkins WILLIAMSON;Henry COLE; James RICE; Paul FLOURNOY and James TAYLOR,all of Mason.

MISS JONES ENTERTAINS--Miss Janet JONES,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Dan JONES,of this city,is enjoying a visit with an aunt,Miss Loula JONES,of Memphis.She is planning a dance Friday at the JONES residence for her Covington friends,Misses Margaret SIMONTON,Kathryn HILL,Verna & Lucille LOWENHAUPT.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Mr.W.H.BAILEY is at home following an appendix operation in a Memphis hospital. Howard ROACH,WW Veteran,is being treated for pneumonia in the Veteran Hospital,Memphis. Mr.Ernest RALPH is seriously ill at the residence of his father,Mr.I.B.RALPH of near Gift. Mr.J.L.ARMSTRONG,of near Munford,suffered a second stroke of paralysis this week,and is in critical condition. Mr.Will SOMERVILL,of near Mason,has been suffering from a complication of troubles recently. Miss Ella HURLEY,although showing some improvement will have been away from her business for three weeks next Saturday. Mr.E.H.McFADDEN,in an improved condition,but still ill,was brought back to his home from Baptist hospital yesterday. Miss Jeam GREEN,of this city,is reported to be ill at the residence of a nephew,Mr.Kent WHITTEN,of Jackson. Mr.Bailey HALL of Mt.Carmel,was taken to a Memphis hospital yesterday for examination.He was thought to have been suffering from the effects of a lick on the head from a baseball bat last Saturday. Roger LEACH,formerly of this city,is in a Memphis hospital,suffering a broken leg and broken ribs,the result from a fall from a truck.

CHARLESTON NOTES--Mr.& Mrs.Charlie CROSS,of Stanton,are visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Hayes FRYE. Miss Jesse COLE was the recent guest of her sister,Mrs.A.D.FORTNER,of Covington. Mr.Van RUSSELTON,of Nashville,is the guest of his aunt,Mrs.J.L.KEEL. Mr.Lester DAVIS delightfully entertained a number of his friends on Wednesday evening with a lawn party.An aunt of the host,Miss Evie WADDELL,of Big Sandy,VA.,suggested interesting games during the evening. Last Friday evening about 9:30,the residence occupied by Mr.& Mrs.Wilton KNIGHT caught on fire,being completely destroyed. BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Guy McDONALD,Wednesday,July 27th,a son,John Wesley.

LOCALS--Rev.J.E.MILES now has rooms in the Mrs.Eliza PEETE residence on West Washington. Mrs.Arnold MALEY and children have recently moved to the MORRISON apartments. Miss Delia MATTHEWS is now home in an apartment at Mrs.Annie May HALL residence on South College. Mr.&MrsPaul FORTNER and baby are now at home in the BEASLEY apartment. Miss Alice HUNGATE,of Ripley,was hostess at a dance last Thursday evening.about 10 members of the Covington younger set attended. Mr.& Mrs.Oscar WALK and family have moved to the Tipton County jail.Sheriff Jim T.SCOTT is now occupying his handsome country residence on highway #59. Extensive improvements are being made in the J.G.BADDOUR residence by Charlie BOWDEN. Mr.Elizie PERRY,for some months assistant to Mr.George TRACY at Covington,in the Kroger store,has been transferred to the Newbern unit of Kroger's and Mr.Cleo DAWSON,of that place is assigned for duty here. Irving MITCHELL,of district #8,was arrested by Deputy Barney BELK Sunday and lodged in jail on the charges of possession of liquor and resisting arrest.

VISITS OLD HOME--W.D.WILLIAMS,of this city,spent last week in the vicinity of Holly Springs and Victoria,Miss.Mr.WILLIAMS was a native of that section and spent some time at the site of his birth.He had the pleasure of being with all the surviving members of his family,seeing some for the first time in 35 years.

EURIE HIGGINS DEAD--Mr.Eurie HIGGINS,42,of St.Louis died at his home early last Friday morning.His body was brought to Covington,reaching here Saturday.Funeral services were conducted at Maley Funeral Home Sunday,interment in Munford Cemetery.A former resident of this county,he had been a resident of St.Louis for many years.He was married to Miss Lola HOGAN,several years ago.She survives him.

THE LEAFLETS--Mr.Louis HAYNIE & Miss Pauline KIRK,and Mr.Luke KELLY & Miss Louise JACKSON were participants in a double wedding at Macedonia church Saturday evening,July 30th,Rev.B.A.WALKER,pastor of the church officiating.Miss Margie SNOWDEN sang "I Love You Truly."The wedding march was played by Mrs.BATTLE.

COVINGTON GETS TELEGRAPH SERVICE--Allen LEE was appointed local representative of the Western Union Telegraph Co.,Wednesday and telegrams my be given Mr.LEE for tranmission by that company.Mr.LEE is at Baltzer's.

THREE MEN INFURED IN AUTO SMASH-UP--Two Covington men,W.T.ADDISON and Wayman WORTHEY,and one former citizen,Landon BEASLEY,now of Brownsville,were seriously injured about 3:30 a.m.last Friday in a terible auto crash.Mr.BEASLEY was at the wheel of his eight-cylinder car which had been driven but a little more than 500 miles.They had left Covington,going to his home in Brownsville when the accident occurred.Mr.WORTHY,his brother-in-law and Mr.ADDISON were passengers.Mr.BEASLEY stated that the lights of an approaching car blinded him and as he drove to the extreme right side of the road,the car struck the steel banister at the curve in the Hatchie river levee,several miles west of Brownsville.One post was pulled completerl out of the ground and that with the strong ribbon of steel and six other posts were carried by the impact into a deep cut beside the highway.Both BEASLEY and WORTHY were thrown clear of the machine,ADDISON being pinned between the seats,They remained unconscious for probably two hours.Mr.BEASLEY was suffering from a fractured skull,fractured back and from the tearing of ribs from his backbone.He had numerous cuts and bruises.Mr.ADDISON had a fractured skull,compound fracture of an ankle,about 125 stitches were taken in his face,arms and body to close the gaping cuts.Mr.WORTHY is apparently free of fractures,his serious condition largely due to loss of blood from very deep body cuts and because of him laying in the water after the accident.

TRANSIENT SAVES HOUSE--Had it not been for a Lauderdale County citizen,who happened to be passing near midnight,the Elbert KNIGHT residence north of the city would have been destroyed by fire.

DOG GOES FOR PAPER--Lanier OVERALL,agent for a Memphis paper,is authority for an account of a highly intelligent dog owned by A.E.BYRD,of District #8.Mr.OVERALL states that he blows his horn three times in passing the BYRD residence each day,and that the dog runs to the gate,picks up the paper and carries it to the house.

FARMER DISAPPEARS FROM HOME MONDAY--Walter ADAMS,a farmer,who farms a portion of the Dunlap Orphanage property,disappeared from home Monday and has since not been seen by members of his family.According to his father-in-law,J.C.JONES,with whom he had lived,he left home in a high good humor.Mr.JONES states that ADAMS was a religious young man and absolutely without bad habits.Prior to his disappearance Monday,he had been away from home but two nights since his marriage seven years ago.He was apparently very fond of his wife and two children. He and his father-in-law have an excellant crop and owe but a very small amount of money on it.ADAMS was seen in Covington Monday,but since that time,no one has been found who knows his movements since.He left home in ordinary work clothes.He is about five feet,six inches tall,weighs 165 pounds,and is a decided blonde.

YOUNG GIRLS HONORED AT DELIGHTFUL AFFAIR--Misses Kathryn WITHERINGTON,of Munford and Laura Winston STEELE of Ripley,were honorees at a moonlight picnic given at U-CUM-INN last Friday Evening.Misses Nell Hansen COX,Catherine WINFORD and Elsie SHERROD were hostesses to 45 guests.Chaperons were Mr.& Mrs.Paul SHOAF; Mrs.John CLARK; Miss Mary TAYLOR; Mrs.Gladys COX and Mrs.John WINFORD.

BOYCE & SCHAEFER--A Wedding of interest to relatives in Tipton County occurred in Galion,Ohio Wednesday,August 3rd,when Miss Annabel SCHAEFER of that city was united in marriage to Moffatt Grier BOYCE of Cleveland,at the home of the bride's parents,Mr.& Mrs.John J.SCHAEFER.Mr.BOYCE is the son of Mrs.Thomas G.BOYCE of Due West,SC.His father,the late Rev.Thomas G.BOYCE was for 20 years pastor of the Salem Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of this county.

YOUNG CHILD DIES--Clyde Hunt STEVENS,five-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.J.L.STEVENS,of near Gainsville,died Monday,August 8th.Funeral services were conducted at the residence Tuesday morning at 10:30 by Rev.S.B.MORRISON,interment occurring at Mason.Besides his parents,the child is survived by one sister,Mary Christine,and all grandparents,Mr.& mrs.J.W.STEVENS and Mr.& Mrs.C.L.HUNT.

CELEBRATES HIS  BIRTHDAY--W.T.HOPKINS,of this vicinity,celebrated his birthday with an excellant barbecue dinner Sunday.The guest list included H.G.HOPKINS & Family,Mrs.FULLER & Family,Mrs.BRICE & Family,and an aged uncle of Mr.HOPKINS.Besides members of family attended:A.E.SLOVER & Family,Rev.W.C.THARP and Dr.V.H.PRICE.

REMEMBERS HIS FRIENDS--Barnham RICE,ex-sheriff of this county,recently sent several friends here most interesting walking sticks made by prisoners at Petros.A.P.TAYLOR,T.A.NEVILS and W.C.SIMONTON were the recipients of Mr.RICE's gifts.which were brought here by W.B.OVERALL,who recently was Mr.RICE's guest at the East Tennessee point.

ENJOYS HIS VACATION--D.L.GODDARD,of Tipton County Farmers Union Bank,is vacationing.He,Mrs.GODDARD and their two children were guests of his relatives at Saulsbury.Mr.& Mrs.GODDARD and their daughter,Elizabeth,left yesterday for Nashville.

OLD OFFENDERS IN TOILS--Willie "Desperate Bill" BYRUM,colored,and an old offender in Covington,is again in the toils of the law.He was seen in the 454 Service Station building about 2 a.m. Sunday by W.F.PARKER and Dick RAY.Before they could summon officers he escaped but was later apprehended at the house of a friend.Brought before Esq.J.Lauderdale RICHARDSON on a charge of housebreaking,he was unable to make the required bond of $500,waived examination and was remanded to jail.

BRIGHTON NOTES--Misses Lavinia McDANIEL,of Salem,Annie Laura and Frances HART of Trenton,have been recent visitors of relatives here. Mr.& Mrs.Book WISEMAN,of Caruthersville,Mo.,are on an extended visit here with relatives. Mrs.Ethel RICHARDSON and sons,Howard and Edward Lee,of Rosemark,and Mr.& Mrs.Harold RICHARDSON of Curve,spent part of last week with Mr.& Mrs.O.L.TILLMAN. Mr.& Mrs.A.MARTINEZ of Memphis,were recent guests of Mr.M.J.FARMER & Family. Mrs.D.E.TANNER is visiting her daughter,Mrs.Martha BASKIN at Burlison. Mr.Harry SPENCER was rushed to the Illinois Central hospital,Paducah,Ky.,Saturday for an emergency operation for appendicitis.At last report he was resting well. Mr.John NELMS,of Pittsburg Landing,was the guest of the family of his brother,Mr.W.L.NELMS Sunday. Mrs.Verdie SARTEN of Covington,spent two days last week in Jackson.She was the guest of her sister,Mrs.Clara ROSS,of Brighton,the latter part of the week. Mrs.A.L.TANNER and daughters,Jean,Kathryn,Ann and June,spent part of last week with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.M.J.FARMER near Salem.

BARBER & BOSWELL--Mrs.Myrtle BOSWELL,of Clopton,announces the marriage of her daughter,Velma,to Mr.Elmo BARBER,of Kerrville.The wedding took place Saturday,August 6th,at Marion,Ark.,Rev.Leslie officiating.Their only attendants were Miss Julia BOSWELL,sister of the bride and Mr.Gordon BARBER,brother of the groom.They were also accompanied by Mr.& Mrs.Monroe OWENS of Memphis and Mr.Jack JOLLY of Millington.On their return through Memphis,they were entertained at the OWEN's home.They were greeted by a group of friends at the bride's mother's home,including Misses Beth & Loree SIMS and Mr.Drew MIMS of Brighton.They are at present with his parents,Mr.& Mrs.James BARBER,of Kerrville.

FORMER RESIDENT IS TREATED BY DAUGHTER--Miss Lucille ARCHER,anaesthetist at the Baptist hospital,Memphis,was called to the emergency room at the hospital recently to administer oxygen to a patient asphyxiated by gas.The patient was her father,Fireman Guy ARCHER,gassed while fighting flames at the Chickasaw Cooperage Co.The shock of the discovery,however,did not deter the young anaesthetist one instant from her work.Fireman ARCHER is a native of this county.

METHODIST MEN PLAN FOR THEIR ANNUAL FISH FRY--Plans are being made this week for the fish fry that is held annually by the men of the First Methodist Church.Earl ELAM,Edward OGILVIE,C.D.McLISTER,Curtis COCKRILL and C.W.BEASLEY are in charge of arrangements.The committee has selected Craven Springs,which is near Richardson's Landing,for the affair Thursday,August 18th.

SUDDEN ATTACK TAKES MRS.EMILY HERRING--widow of the late James HERRING,died suddenly about noon Monday at the residence of her nephew,Julian J.WHITLEY,on West Sherrod Avenue.Mrs.HERRING had been ill for several days but her death was unexpected.She was born and reared in this county,being a member of a well known family,and was universally esteemed and beloved.She was about 75 years of age and was for many years a member of the Methodist Church.Funeral services were held at the WHITLEY residence Tuesday,Rev.E.W.CRUMP officiating.Interment in the Clopton Cemetery.She is survived by one daughter,Miss Henny HERRING.

AMONG THE COLORED FOLKS--Notice is hereby given that the early fall meeting of midwives and nurses has been poatponed at the request of Dr.A.J.BUTLER,county health head,until the fourth Saturday in September.At this time the association will meet in Dr.BUTLER's office. Sarah ALSTON.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Dr.& Mrs.H.W.SALE are expected home today after attending the bedside of Mrs.Harry KLEIN,a sister of the former,who has been ill in her Elgin,Ill.,home.Mrs.KLEIN recently slipped in alighting from a taxi-cab and fell,striking her head.At first her injury was thought to be slight,but she later became violetly ill.She is now in an improved condition.She is the former Miss Pauline SALE of Covington. Little Oren COUSAR,five-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.COUSAR,of near Gilt Edge,is being treated in the Methodist hospital,Memphis.The child fell from a bed,and it is thought that a general infection has resulted from his injuries sustained at that time. Mr.W.E.FLETCHER,of Gilt Edge,had a foot and leg badly crushed while rolling logs Wednesday.It is not known where a fracture or compound fracture was the result of the unfortunate accident. Bailey HALL,who was struck on the head by a baseball,has been permitted to return home from a Memphis hospital.Attending physcians advise he must be kept quiet and stay out of the sun for some time.

Misses Ora & Lois MOORE left Friday for a two weeks visit with Mrs.R.N.HUNTER of Cotton Plant,Miss.,a sister of the Misses MOORE. Mrs.Jess TURNER,of near Hogan's store,was the guest of her cousin,Mrs.R.L.BRYAN,of the Pleasant Grove vicinity Sunday. Mr.& Mrs.Mike WILSON and daughters,Cornelia and Jean,are the guests of her mother,Mrs.S.J.OSBORNE,Jr.,of Pleasant Grove. Miss Marguerite GRIFFIN returned to her home near Brighton after a weeks visit with her aunt,Mrs.E.H.ROBERTS of near Covington. Mr.Luther FREDRICKSON of Sardis,Miss.,was the weekend guest of his parents,Mr.& Mrs.Jeff FREDRICKSON of this city. Mrs.Thomas STRONG of Memphis arrived Tuesday for a visit with the family of her father,Mr.J.P.MARSHALL of this city. Mrs.Ben KING of Brighton and Mrs.Belle BOLICK,of Dallas,Texas were visitors at Sharon last Sunday.Mrs.BOLICK was formerly Miss Belle HARPER,well known to the older people of this section,most of her life prior to her marriage to Mr.BOLICK having been spent in the old family home near Almyra. Mrs.Elizabeth RAINES of Bells was the guest of her sister,Mrs.Emma SHAW,of the Idaville community the past week. Mrs.Charles HENDREN and little daughter,Kathleen of Memphis,are spending this week with her father,Mr.Will WRIGHT.

A number of men of the younger set attended a dance given by Miss Margaret TUCKER of Ripley Tuesday evening.Included among her guests were:F.R.FISHER,Jr.,Exum FISHER,Herbert JACQUES,J.S.RUFFIN,Jr.,Harris COBB, John SIMONTON,Johnnie HARVEY and Farrar ELAM. Tom Sidney CLARK,colored,of Mason,who has long been a familiar figure in court circles here,was ambushed last Friday night near Mason.He was instantly killed as the result of a charge from a shotgun which entered his back and head.No clue to his assailant. W.E.DAUGHERTY of this city,had the misfortune to lose the first joint on the thumb of his right hand Wednesday.He was using the high speed planer when the strong suction pulled his finger under the blade. Mrs.Harry BRITTAIN and daughter,Martha Jane and Mr.& Mrs.Horace WILLIAMS of Nolensville,Tenn.,spent several days with Mrs.BRITTIAN's sister,Mrs.P.A.TURNER of this vicinity.Returning home Mr.WILLIAMS becoming seriously ill on the return trip and was taken to a hospital.

CHIEF WALL'S ANNIVERSARY--Fire Chief Ed WALL rounded out a period of 35 years with the local fire department this week. Following volunteer service of three years he was made chief,which position he has held for the past 32 years.

SOMERVELL'S CLOSES--R.T.SOMERVELL,of this city,filed a petition in bankruptcy in federal court,Memphis this morning.Mr.SOMERVELL was the operator of the oldest grocery business in the city.His health partially failed him following the death of his wife,which occurred about two years ago,and he is now confined to his bed in his South College street residence.

LOCAL ITEMS FROM OVER THE COUNTY--Mr.Don BAXTER has the contract for the erection of a four room bungalow for Mr.D.A.BRYANT,of this vicinity. Gordon YARBROUGH and Robert TURNER have left with the Everett McCORMICK trucks for New Madrid,Mo.,where Mr.McCORMICK has been awarded a contract for about 30 days government work. Miss Dixie ASHCRAFT and her mother have an apartment at the residence of J.B.HEFLIN.Miss ASHCRAFT will teach domestic science at Byars-Hall High School. Mr.Abe CAUDELL,formerly of this city but recently of Fulton,Ky.,has moved with his family to Memphis.He will continue to manage Brooks--Boone Company from his new location.

FORREST OAK STRUCK ON T.B.WRIGHT FARM--The elements in the course of an electrical storm Tuesday was unfriendly to the giant oak,said to be over 100 years old,standing majestically in the yard of T.Bennett WRIGHT,10 miles west of Henning.A bolt of lightening struck the tree and ripped it from top to bottom.This would not be news except for the history to this tree.According to tradition,in April 1874,while awaiting the arrival of General Nathan Bedford FOREST,who was riding through from Jackson to Lauderdale County,his division commanders,Cols.BARTOW,WILSON,RUSSELL and Major ANDERSON,were in conference under the shadow of this tree,perfecting plans for an attack on Fort Pillow.FOREST arrived early the next morning and he was appraised of what had been done.On April 12,everything being ready FORREST directed the activities and the battle raged,the Confederates suffering a loss of 20 killed and several wounded,while the Yankees paid a total of 272 men killed and a large number maimed and wounded.Access to Fort Pillow was by a hazardous route.John LANEY,who resided near the fort and knew every nook and corner of the country,gave General FORREST minute directions for the advance of his men.Mr.* Mrs.WRIGHT are well known in Covington,where they frequently visit.Mrs.WRIGHT is related to Mrs.Will REID,of this city.

MRS.CARRIE B.WHEELER BURIED LAST SATURDAY--Mrs.Carrie B.WHEELER,wife of James I.WHEELER,Illinois Central railroad engineer,of Memphis,died Friday morning at her residence,following a lengthly illness.Although in failing health for the past seven years,her condition did not become serious until a week ago.She was 53 years old.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.J.W.ORR,pastor of McLemore Ave.Presbyterian Church,at the residence Saturday,burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery,Memphis.Pallbearers were:W.W.CHENAULT,H.H.WALSH,John MOSS,J.B.CRAIG,Phillip MAHONEY,and Herman SLUSMEYER.Born in Covington,Mrs.WHEELER had lived in Memphis most of her life.A half-sister of the late A.B.COBB,of this city,she had been the guest of Mrs.COBB frequently following Mr.COBB's death,until her invalidism.Besides her husband,she leaves six neices;Mrs.Aurora DAWSON & Mrs.J.B.MILLS of Memphis,Mrs.Dan JONES,Mrs.Mildred BROWN,Mrs.Nannie CALHOUN,Mrs.Grace JETER and Mrs.Verna LOWENHAUGHT,all of Covington and five nephews; L.E.,J.W. & M.F.Weaver,all of Memphis,A.B.COBB,of Baton Rouge,LA,W.H.COBB of Los Angeles,Calif.,and Harris COBB,of Covington.(there are six listed)

ATOKA R.F.D.NOTES--The many friends of Miss Margaret DRAFFIN and Mr.P.G.McQUISTON were both interested and surprised to learn of their recent marriage. Both friends and relatives were saddened by the news of the recent death of Mrs.Viola PERKINS.She with her husband and their son,had made her home in Oxford,Miss.,for the past several years.Besides her immediate family,she is survived by one brother and three sisters.

WALTER ADAMS FOUND--Walter ADAMS,young farmer of near Sharon,who disappeared under odd circumstances about a week ago,has been found.It has been learned he is visiting an uncle,J.T.ROGERS,of Lake City,Ark.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Dr.H.W.SALE,of this city,received a wire this week from Elgin,Ill.,stating that his sister,Mrs.Harry KLEIN was better after suffering a relapse.She is the former Miss Pauline SALE of Covington. Florence Alice,12-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.C.L.GLENN of this vicinity,has been seriously ill with an attack of appendicitis this week. Mr.J.H.FLIPPEN,who has lately returned to his home after being under treatment of specialists in El Paso,Texas is improving.

WAR NURSES TO MEET; MRS.HUNTLEY OFFICER--Nearly 14 years after the war,Tennessee's World War nurses will meet each other again for the first time in a state wide meeting during the American Legion convention in Memphis next week and for the first time nurses will be delegates to the convention.There are 30 nurse-veterans in Memphis,most of whom formed an organization last Armistice Day.Among the 26 members is one who wears the croix de querre,in recognition of her feat in saving the life of a French officer.She is Mrs.Henrietta WARING,who is vice chairman of the Memphis organization.Mrs.Ruth D.HUNTLEY is chairman and Mrs.Lens Lyon SAINT,secretary.Mrs.HUNTLEY,Mrs.WARING and Mrs.B.L.CAWTON are delegates to the state Legion convention.Mrs.HUNTLEY,a daughter of Mrs.S.S.DENNIE,of this city,is a sister of Mrs.Ben MATTHEWS of Tabernacle,and of L.L.DENNIE,of this city.

MRS.C.C.BYRD DIES--Mrs.Roxie BYRD,widow of the late C.C.BYRD,of this county,died suddenly in a Memphis hospital Monday morning.Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Mt.Lebanon Baptist Church by Rev.W.C.THRAP,interment occurring in the church cemetery.Mrs.BYRD,who was 72 years of age,is survived by four children;Messrs.Lytle,Lannie and Claud BYRD and Mrs.Jennie PATTERSON,the latter of Munford.

INFANT DIES--The four-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs.E.C.EUBANKS,of South Covington,died at the family residence about noon Monday.Funeral services were held by Rev.S.B.MORRISON,interment in Munford cemetery.All the infant's grandparents survive.They are Mr.& Mrs.E.B.WILSON and Mr.& Mrs.D.W.EUBANKS.

DR.C.T.WRIGHT WAS ONCE MASON-RECTOR--Dr.Charles T.WRIGHT,rector of Grace Episcopal Church.Memphis for the past 13 years,died Sunday morning at Baptist hospital following a heart attack.He was 69 years old.He was born in London,England and came to the United States with his father in 1870 and settled in Memphis.Following the death of his father during the yellow fever epidemic of 1878,he was adopted by the Rt.Rev.Charles T.QUINTARD and lived in Sewanee.He graduated from theological college in 1887,becoming rector of the Espicopal Church at Mason,where he met and married Miss Anne Rivers SEARY,daughter of the late Maj.Charles I.SEARY.Besides his widow,he leaves a daughter,Mrs.J.M.OLIVE of Memphis and a son,Charles Quintard WRIGHT of Albany,Ga.Burial occurred in Elmwood Cemetery,Memphis.

TENNESSEE TOWNS IN THE NEWS LIGHT--Adamsville."Grandma" BREWER,of this vicinity,voted her first time in the recent state primary.She was born in Wayne County in 1837,being 95 years of age.She was able to read the election returns without the use of glasses and enjoys excellant health.

Miss Evie WADDELL has returned to her home in Big Sandy,Va.,after enjoying a visit of three weeks with her sister,Mrs.J.W.DAVIS. AGED MERCHANT ROBBED--A.B.LAXTON,aged merchant who is in business at Peckerwood Point,several miles west of Munford,was robbed last week of about $60 worth of merchandise.Mr.LAXTON sleeps in the store and he was awakened by pistol shots fired over his bed after the thieves had removed the shells from his gun.It also was found later that telephone wires leading to the store had been cut.

FIRST BALE OF COTTON GINNED BY JIM HALL--Jim HALL,of near Crosstown,brought the first bale of cotton of the 1932 season of Covington yesterday.He has also been first upon several occasion.C.R.SIMONTON bought the cotton for eight cents,oremuims to the value of $16.00 being given Mr.HILL by local merchants.Nick BRADSHAW brought in the first bale last year,it selling for only 6 cents a pound.

DEMOLISHES WAREHOUSE--L.P.FLIPPEN is wrecking his large warehouse which has stood for some years on the property behind his store.The building has stood partially on land owned by Mrs.Albert HALL and I.L.WORTHAM.

CAMPGROUND NEWS--Miss Lurline CAMPBELL of Memphis is visiting Mrs.T.E.WILLIAMS. Mrs.C.O.STARNES of Millington is visiting her son,Reber STARNES of this vicinity. Mr.& Mrs.A.L.FLETCHER and daughter,Helen,were weekend guests of Mr.& Mrs.M.C.JOYNER. Mr.Jim WISEMAN was the guest of his mother,Mrs.Martha WISEMAN Sunday. Mr.& Mrs.Reber STARNES and mother were weekend guests of Mr.& Mrs.Wess LUMPKINS of West Memphis,Ark. Little Jim JONES,grandson of Mrs.N.JOYNER,has returned to Nashville after a few months with relatives here. Mr.Woodrow JOYNER accompanied Rev.& Mrs.T.E.CALHOUN and son of Randolph,when they left for Washington,D.C.,where they will visit relatives for about three weeks. Miss Louise WILLIAMS has selected Sept.10 as the date for her marriage to Mr.Everett L.WATERS,son of Mr.& Mrs.H.O.WATERS of Memphis.Formal announcement has been made by the parents of the bride to be,Mr.& Mrs.R.L.WILLIAMS,also of Memphis.The wedding will occurr on the 22nd anniversary of the wedding of Miss WILLIAMS parents.

KERRVILLE NOTES--An informal party was given on the lawn of Mrs.Henry WILLIAMS last Saturday night. Miss Annie Ruth PARR is on the sick list. Mrs.Bessie SAUCIER and daughters,Mary Elizabeth and Dorothy spent a few days with Mr.& Mrs.John BOWERS of Munford. An entertainment was given last Saturday in the home of Mr.T.E.DENSFORD to compliment his aunt,Mrs.SallieMORGAN,of Poplar Grove,who has spent the week here.

LOCALS--Mrs.Mike HUFFMAN of Greener's is spending her vacation this week at Dawson Springs and other Ky.,points. Mr.Allen Lee is enjoying a vacation from his duties at Baltzer's.Mr.Cecil McKEE is working for him during his absence. Born to Mr.& Mrs.J.B.THOMAS,of Memphis Sunday,a daughter.Mrs.THOMAS is the former Miss Ellen SIMONTON of this city. Mr.& Mrs.Bland PATRICK of the Mt.Carmel vicinity,gave an informal musical Wednesday to especially compliment Cooper BLACKMON. Mr.Henry HENDRICK,of this city member of the Cincinnati Reds,National League baseball team,has been out of the game for about a week with an infured finger. Misses Sue FLOWERS and Louise O'NEAL entertained the members of the Junior Epworth League,of the First Methodist Church.A watermelon feast was given at Miss O'NEAL's residence on North Maple street.Small reidences owned by Jim GRANBERRY and Gordon CONNELL,both colored,were destroyed by fire on Zion streer about 3:30 a.m.Wednesday.The orgin of the blaze is unknown. Mr.Charlie NEWMAN,of the Cotton Lake vicinity entertained with open house Friday to compliment his daughter,Dora Edna.Community families gathered at the NEWMAN residence and brought baskets of food.About 100 were present.

U.S.SOLDIER DIES--Vernon B.BOTTOM,who recently completed a three year enlistment in the United States army,died last week in a Denver government sanitarium.The body was brought under military escort to Covington,reaching here Friday morning.Funeral services were held at Elm Grove Christian Church the same day by Rev.W.C.THARP.The young ex-soldier was a step-son of William WALKER,of near Detroit.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Miss Nell Hanson COX,daughter of Mrs.Gladys COX of this city,dislocated an ankle this morning for the second time,on a tennis court. Mr.John MAYO of Memphis,a son of Mr.& Mes.W.Ross MAYO of this city,is reported convalescing after an appendix operation. Mrs.J.D.McCLANAHAN,of Gainsville,is again at home after confinement of several months in the home of a daughter,Mrs.A.S.WITHERINGTON of Millington.She fell some time ago at which time she suffered a broken hip and arm. Mr.J.W.FLEMING of this city has recently been ill in Memphis,where he was the guest of his daughter,Mrs.Frawley PIPPEN,of that city.

WEBB IN COLLISION--L.L.WEBB and one of his children of Gainsville,escaped with minor bruises last Saturday in an auto collision near Hansonhurst.A small car occupied by four negroes turned a corner at high speed according to Mr.WEBB and he was moving to slow to avoid the crash.

SPLENDID WOMAN DIES--Mrs.R.Y.McCALLA of Rosemark,a highly respected Christian woman died last Saturday afternoon.Funeral services were held Monday,interment occurring in Rosemark Cemetery.She leaves her husband and one son.

Mrs.Doyle HILL and children have been recent guests of Mr.& Mrs.Ellis HAZELRIG,of the Mt.Lebanon vicinity. Mrs.Spencer BISHOP of Memphis was the guest of Mrs.Ruth KINNEY of this city last week. Mrs.Ernest SMITH and sons,Joe,Edward and George have returned to their home in Memphis after visiting relatives in Burlison. Miss Mary Charlotte CLARK,daughter of Rev.& Mrs.R.A.CLARK of Paducah,Ky.,was a guest of Miss Elizabeth McMahon of this city. Mrs.Bertha CARLYLE and son returned to their home in Black Oak,Ark.,after being guests of Mr.& Mrs.Jim Tom WOOD of this vicinity. Little Miss Marie WHITE of Memphis is the young guest of Master W.T.BIDDLE,Jr.,and his sister,Miss Dorothy Carolyn BIDDLE. Mr.Hebris McGAUGHEY and son,Billie of Memphis were weekend guests of his sister,Mrs.Edgar GReer and brother Mr.H.D.McGAUGHEY of this city. Mr.& Mrs.Ben MORRISON have returned to their home in Okla.,after several weeks visit with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.W.STEVENS,of Gainsville. Mrs.W.E.SMITH and two sons,Billy and Raymond of Memphis are visiting her parents,Mr.& mrs.W.W.PEELER and her sister,Mrs.E.L.FLEMING of this city. Mrs.Winnie Bess RAWLINGS of Little Rock,Ark.,is the guest of Mrs.Lizzie T.SHELTON of this city.Mrs.RAWLINGS has just returned from a seven months' tour which included a motor trip through Egypt. Miss Janet MORRIS,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Tom MORRIS,of near Mt.Carmel is their guest this week.She has made her home in Philadeplhia for about four years where she has studied and taught ia an Espicopal school in that city. Mrs.J.E.TORREY,son,James,and daughter,Elizabeth of Fayette Miss.,were guests of her sister,Mrs.P.A.TURNER for the weekend.A brother,H.H.TURNER and a neice Miss Lula BRITTIAN of Nashville and another neice,mrs.GREEN and son of Dallas,Texas were also guests of Mrs.TURNER.

THE LEAFLETS--Practical Economy;Mr.R.J.McDONALD,a modest farmer of the Idaville community,a regular user of pipe tobacco,and his good wife,who knows the value of money and can stretch a dollar to the limit,conceived the idea that empty tobacco sacks might as well be made useful by being used as the top part of quilts.For the past 16 years,Mr.McDONALD has been saving these sacks and in the meantime his wife has covered 10 quilts with them.She used 278 sacks to the quilt.The original cost of the sack and tobacco for each quilt was $27.80. Mr.Arnie BRADFORD and Miss Ethel SALMOND were married at Marion,Ark.,Saturday,August 20th.They were accompanied by Messrs.Ben HARDIE,David and John DRAFFIN.Mrs.BRADFORD is the youngest daughter of Mr.John D.SALMOND.The young couple will make their home in Idaville.

OFFICERS SUCCESSFUL IN TWO LIQUOR RAIDS--On last Friday afternoon two stills were destroyed by local officers and five lots of mash poured out.Sheriff Jim T.SCOTT destroyed a one-barrel cooker on the Roy BOYD farm in the Willow Grove vicinity.On the same day,Chief Deputy Jim Tom WOOD,accompanied by Deputy Ed ROBERTS and his son,Kemmett WOOD,found mash at four points in district #9 and a small one barrel still.Both stills and mash was destroyed.

CHARLESTON NOTES--Mr.& Mrs.Bill BOURNE and daughter of Brunswick,were weekend guests of Mr.& mrs.Jim FAULK and family. Mrs.Addie BRIGHT and children of Mason,were recent guests of Mr.& Mrs.Bruce WHITEHORN and family. Miss Mabel BRAMMER and Mr.Edwin EVANS of Memphis were guests of Mr.& Mrs.Will BRAMMER last week. Miss Minnie WALKER and Mr.Eugene WALKER spent last Wednesday with their sister,Mrs.Fannie WILLIAMS of Stanton. Mrs.L.E.SHOAF was the weekend guest of her sister,Mrs.Chester YARBRO of Mason. Mrs.Ray SHOAF and children were guests of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.C.E.LACKEY,of Covington during the weekend.

GIN NEARS COMPLETION--The four-stand,oilburning Hardwig-Etter gin being erected by Esq.V.W.BRINGLE,at Gift is nearing completion.

HONOR MRS.BOWDEN AT FAMILY REUNION--"Grandma" Ellen BOWDEN,of near Covington,was honored last Sunday when more than 150 members of her family and friends called during the day for the reunion and homecoming.The occasion was celebrated at the R.C.MATHIS residence in the 12th district.
