Note: Will and Testament of John Hassell Jr, son of John Hassell and Ann Jennett, and brother of Asa Hassell.
In the name of God, amen. I, John Hassell, of the County of Sumner and the State of Tennessee,
calling to mind the mortality of man and...to die do ordain this my last will and Testament which is
in manner and form as follows. I do now recommend my soul to Almighty God who gave it and
trusting in the care of my.... to have a blessed resurrection, and as to my worldly estate it is my
soul wish and desire that my beloved wife Peggy Hassell shall have the management of my
property until her death and it is also my wish and desire that she shall have the house ..... that is
now on hand ....... fit to live in.
And it is my wish and desire that my three sons shall have a good english Education with their
names as follows (viz) Jourdan, Presley and John Page Hassell and of my estate, my three
daughters to have sufficient learning to read and write (viz) Charlotte, Harriett and Sally Hassell,
the same to come out of my estate.
I also leave my property to my wife and wish her agreeable to the above statement and at her
death it is my wish and desire that my estate shall be sold and the cash to be equally divided
amongst my six children that I have above named and further it is my request that my Executors
shall see to the managing of my children as I have mentioned that is to give them their education
agreeable to my request.
And lastly I do constitute and appoint Rueben Douglas and my Brother Abraham Hassell my
Executors to this my last will and testament, Hereby revoking all others In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th of Jany(?) 1806.
