The Wilson Whitson
and Elizabeth Mitchel Family
Wilson B. Whitson was born in Wilson County, TN ca 1834 the son of George B.
Whitson and Margaret Tipton. The Whitson farm was located along Spencer's
Creek off the Cumberland River and now part of Boxwell Boyscout Camp in Wilson
County. This land was an inheritance George Whitson received from his father
Abraham Whitson who had died in Wilson County in 1819. Abraham and Lydia
Whitson had moved to the Cumberland Country from East Tennessee after 1800.
George and Margaret moved their family to Sumner County before 1850, settling
in District 17 east of Fountain Head. George and Wilson Whitson purchased land
from John White and in 1861 Wilson obtained a deed. George Whitson died before
1870 and Margaret Tipton Whitson in 1901, she is buried in Hollins Cemetary in
Sumner County.
Wilson married his neighbor Elizabeth Mitchel in December of 1862 - she was 14
years old. Elizabeth had been raised by Henry and Mary Bradley after her
mother's death in 1850. Elizabeth went by Bradley even though she had never
been adopted. The couple set up house on the 123 acres Wilson purchased prior
to his marriage. It was situated about a fourth of a mile away from the
Bradley farm. Henry Bradley fell ill and Wilson went between the two farms
keeping them up. In the summer of 1864, Henry Bradley ask Wilson and Elizabeth
to move back home to care for him and they agreed. Their first child was born
in November of 1864. They stayed with Henry until his death in March of 1865
and then continued to live there to care for his widow and her mother. Henry's
widow Mary remarried George Sanford in 1868 and moved "Over the Ridge". She
gave Wilson and Elizabeth the farm. Mary Bradley died in February 1884.
Elizabeth Bradley Martin, a neice of Henry Bradley's, knew Elizabeth Mitchel
had never been adopted and also knew she held the farm by gift without a deed.
She decided she could take it. She obtained documents from Henry's closest
living relatives giving her their interest in his estate and filed a lawsuit
that lasted years. In November of 1890, Wilson and Elizabeth lost their home
to fire. Wilson Whitson talked of giving up the Bradley land. They moved back
to their original homestead and built a new house. Jacob and Elizabeth Martin
moved onto the Bradley farm one night in Nov 1891.They placed their possession
in a corn crib and settled in. The next morning Elizabeth Whitson and her son
John found them and ran them off - Elizabeth Martin filed criminal charges.
E.H.C. Sarver, Esq. heard the case and acquitted both Elizabeth and John
Whitson. Wilson dismantled his new home and rebuilt it on the Bradley farm. He
died in March of 1894 before the end of the case which was eventually
settled in his favor. In 1899 William Henry Whitson received a deed to the
property. Elizabeth died the 25th of October 1909 and was buried in Hollins
Cemetary. It is believed Wilson Whitson and his father George were also buried
in Hollins Cemetary in unmarked graves.
