The Moncrief Family
The first Moncrief to settle in Sumner Co was Sanders Moncrief. He was there
circa 1820. He was b. 1798 in Wilkes Co. Ga. M. Susanna Phillips, dau. of
Leonard Phillips and Fanny Brown Phillips. m. 1/7/1817. They were tenant
farmers at first then bought 150 acres on Deshea Creek. Sanders was also a
hatmaker, he made felt and beaver hats. His death date is unknown but he was
in census until 1860.
Susanna is supposed to have hung herself because of Sanders infidelity. This
occurred around 1854 and would coincide with the fact that the family was all
dismissed by letter from the communion of the Dry Fork Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in Oct. 1855. No further info has been found to explain
the dismissal. It is my own personal observation that this was probably due
to Sanders infidelity and Susanna's Suicide. No one knows where Susanna is
buried. Sanders remarried in 1854 to Mrs. Hannah Thomas. Not known is she
is the one he was indiscrete with!!
Susanna & Sanders had nine children: Martha, Elizabeth A., Littleberry B.
(my ancestor), James L., William P., Thomas J., Susan M., Drucilla and
Synderella.
Sanders and 2nd wife had 3 children: Emma R., Josephine, Samuella.
To date there is no concrete proof of the Sanders Moncrief's parentage.
There were several Moncrief families in Wilkes Co GA. By 1820 no Moncrief's
were there except Josiah, Mary & Thomas (and their families). Josiah was a
Rev. War soldier in Ga. Only a few facts are known of him. Josiah's son
Thomas has proved ,so far, to be the most likely to have been Sanders'
father. Josiah's Wife was Elizabeth Hammock.
I have more info on this family including some Civil War records and troop
information. Littleberry is listed under the all of the following:
2nd Lt. Co E, 9th TN Calvary, 1st Lt. Co E 15th Regiment, 1st Lt. Co E, 3rd
Regiment Cavalry (Morgan's Brigade), 1st Lt, 1st Co F, Bennett's Reg't
Cavalry (Morgan's Brigade.). Part of this is due to the fact that he passed
himself off as a PVT. after his capture in Cheshire Oh., When it was
discovered he was a LT. he was taken to Johnson's Island, Ohio.
