The Samuel Higgason Family

  1. Samuel Higgason born 1743, Hanover Co., VA, son of John Higgason and Caty Christmas married Sally Gentry, born Virginia, died Sumner Co., TN. Samuel died 14 FEB 1832, Sumner Co., TN. As a young man Samuel moved to neighboring Louisa County and was married in about 1774 to Sally Gentry. Just as he was settling into married life and his career the Revolutionary War started and he was called into service in the Virginia State Militia. In the spring of 1776, leaving his pregnant wife at home to be taken care of by her family, he set out for Richmond, Virginia where he was mustered into Capt. Benjamin Timberlake's Company and was to serve for 3 months. During this 3 month time period he marched from Richmond to Jamestown and from there to Williamsburg. After remaining there for awhile his term of enlistment expired and he returned home to his family in Louisa County. Then in the fall of 1777 he was again called into service this time for two years and he was still assigned to Capt. Timberlake's Company. This time however he was sent to Albemarle County Virginia to guard prisoners. In January of 1780 after his 2 year term expired he re-enlisted in Capt. Hawkin's Company of Artificers (skilled craftsmen) and was sent to Richmond. His duty as an artificer was to make coffins and to mend wagons and carts for the Continental Army. He stayed in the militia as an artificer for several months after the defeat of Cornwallis in October 1781. After the war Samuel returned to Louisa County Virginia where he and his wife raised their children and worked as a carpenter. It is unknown why that in about 1805 at the age of about 62 Samuel and all but one of his children moved to Sumner Co. He purchased 45 acres of land on Sink Creek from Thomas Patton and lived for the next 27 years until he died.

Second Generation

  1. David Higgason born ABT 1785, Louisa Co., VA, married 1803, in Goochland Co., VA, Nancy Crenshaw. Sometime after 1820 and before 1830 David moved to Fayette Co., TN. In the 1820 census he had two sons, one under 10 years and one 10 to 16. He also had 3 daughters, one under 10 and two 16 to 18. He and his wife were in the 26 to 45 age bracket. Also in Fayette Co. in 1860 was a Edward J. Higgason, age 30, he was probaby a grandson of David.

Cecilia died BEF 1836, Sumner Co., TN. Cecilia's children lived with James' second wife Sarah after he died. James: James' last name was also spelled Itson. James died in the fall of the year when drowned in the Cumberland River.

Turner) died 23 OCT 1858. John d. 16 AUG 1872, Sumner Co., TN, occupation: Magistrate. John's first wife, Lucretia, died sometime about 1830. In March of 1843 John was made guardian of Sarah E. Parsons and her brother Dixon. In December of 1845 Sarah would marry John's son James E. Higgason. The two marriages for John were found for under the name of Hickison. The Higgason name was spelled, Hickason, Hickison, Hickinson and Higgatson.

In 1850 James and Sarah's children were living with Sarah and her mother Sarah M. and step-father John Carr. In 1860 the children living with their grandmother Sarah M., who was a widow, and their uncle John Baker Parsons.
    Sarah: Sometime after 1850 and before 1860 Sarah died.

William was a school teacher before he went to work for Missouri Pacific Railroad as a section foreman. In 1929 William was involved in an accident involving a railroad motor car on which he was riding and an automobile that collided with them in Johnston City, IL at a grade crossing. In the accident William suffered a skull fracture which lead to his early retirement. William and his family moved from Johnston City, IL to Cape Girardeau, MO in 1930 to be closer to his daughter Mabel Lorene.

When Herbert died he was cremated and his son scattered his ashes at sea off the coast of Cuba. Herbert was a Navy Reserve Chief and enjoyed his time in the Navy.
