The 20th Tennessee Infantry enlisted 1165 men. At the surrender at Greensboro, N. C. there were 34 left. This company furnished five of the survivors, namely, Thomas Harris, Samuel Stalcup, William Page, Joshua Talley and A. G. Pitt.
A word here about desertions. When thousands of men volunteered for service in the Confederate Army in the first several months, they enlisted for six months, twelve months or the duration of the war. There was no Conscript Law then. As these men enlisted before the passage of a conscript law they felt that it did not apply to them. The edict from Richmond decided that it did. This difference of opinion caused desertions, especially when regiments were near home.
In preparing this record of service we notice the service being badly crippled by the discharge of trained, battled hardened veterans.
There was no age limit the first year.
