John WRIGHT Sr, was born abt. 1740. His wife's name is unknown. They lived in Warren Co. NC and appear on the State Census of 1787 with 2 males between 21-60, 4 males under 20 or above 60, 5 females and 2 blacks between 12-50. They are still in Warren Co. NC in 1790 and 1800. Sometime after 1800 they moved to Sumner Co. TN. In the Biog of Porter Wright, son Gideon, in Simpson Co. KY says "my father came to Sumner Co. TN, as a young man with his parents." Both John WRIGHT and his wife died in Sumner Co. TN soon after arriving here. John died just prior to October 20, 1809, when the children sold 125 acre farm in Warren Co. NC to their brother, John WRIGHT, Jr., and he in turn authorized George TODD to "sell and make deed for said land."

  1. Briton Y./J. Wright born abt. 1766. Briton married March 5, 1787 in Warren Co. NC to Mary HUDSON.
  2. Zachariah Wright born abt. 1769. Married Cathrine NEAL.
  3. John Wright Jr., born 1771/1772, died after 1860 possibly in Wilson Co. TN.
  4. Delilah Wright
  5. Susanna Wright
  6. Gideon Wright born December 30, 1777 NC, died September 26, 1867 Sumner Co. TN. Married on 1813 in Sumner Co. TN to Catherine ANDERSON.
  7. Lucy Wright born February 13, 1779 NC, admitted to communion of Dry Fork C. P. Church October 12, 1832, soon after the church was organized. In 1850 we find a Lucy Wright 73, living with Lydia WALLACE 67 (Lydia was the widow of James WALLACE). In 1860 we find Lucretia Wright aged 79, midwife, living near her brother Gideon Wright. Church records shows her death as Jan. 1868. Sumner Co. TN.
  8. Elizabeth "Betsey" Wright born 1780 NC, died after 1850 Sumner Co. TN. Married April 15, 1795 in Warren Co. NC to Brooks NEAL - See Neal Family.
  9. James Wright born abt. 1780/1785 in NC, died 1828 Sumner Co. TN. Married in 1812 Sumner Co. TN to Nancy MONTGOMERY.

      John WRIGHT Jr. (son of John WRIGHT, Sr and unknown wife) born 1771/1772 in NC, died after 1860 in Wilson Co. TN. Wife is unknown.

      Children of John WRIGHT and wife unknown are:

      1. William R. Wright born abt. 1796. Married on July 1, 1819 Sumner Co. TN to Elizabeth SANDERSON. (William is not a confirmed child).
      2. Susanna Wright born 1794/1796 NC, died 1886 Wilson Co. TN. Married on August 29, 1816 in Sumner Co. TN to James T. ELLIS born 1790, died 1878.
      3. Betsey Wright married on May 12, 1819 in Sumner Co. TN to James O. NEEL. (Betsey is not a confirmed child).
      4. James Brittain Wright born 1802, was living in Carrol Co. TN in 1830. (James is not a confirmed child).

      Gideon WRIGHT (son of John WRIGHT, Sr and unknow wife) was born December 30, 1777 in NC, died September 26, 1867 Sumner Co TN. In 1813 Gideon married Catherine ANDERSON, daughter of Robert and Mary ANDERSON, and granddaughter of John and Margaret ANDERSON. She was born in NC on April 14, 1790.       James WRIGHT (son of John WRIGHT, Sr and unknown wife) born 1780/1785 NC, died before February 14, 1828 Sumner Co. TN. He married on December 4, 1812 in Sumner Co. TN to Nancy MONTGOMERY, born 1780/1790, died January 30, 1841 Sumner Co. TN. In 1817 was given 337 acres by father-in-law Wm MONTGOMERY, Sr.

      1. Emily Wright born December 15, 1814 Sumner Co. TN, died after 1880 Sumner Co. TN. Buried in family cem. near Friendship Church. Married on January 3, 1839 Sumner Co. TN to Andrew H. GUTHRIE.
      2. James W. Wright born August 6, 1816 Sumner Co. TN,died August 3, 1889 West Lindsey, MO. Moved to MO in 1834. Married 1st Mary J. HUGHES, married 2nd Nancy PARKER, married 3rd Mrs. Rippy KINKAID. James "professed religion at age 20...moved to Benton Co. MO 1834." Children (1st wife) all born in MO, William b. 1845 d. 1846, James F b. 1846, d. 1868 of typhoid fever, Emily J., b. 1849, d. In childhood, Isaac B. B. 1851, d. 1868 of typhoid, Mary M. B. 1854, d. 1868, Joel M. b. 1857, d. 1857 aged 12 days, Martha M. b. 1858, d. 1932. Child (2nd wife) born in MO, John Wesley b. 1863, d. 1901. Child (3rd wife) born in MO, James Clifton.
      3. Mildred "Milley" Wright born abt 1817 Sumner Co. TN. Married on May 23, 1836 Sumner Co TN to Wm. F. KIRKPATRICK. Wm. bought land in Benton Co. MO 1842 and 1844.
      4. John M. Wright born abt. 1819/1820 Sumner Co. TN. Lived with his mother in 1840, moved to Benton Co. MO, bought land there in 1857.
      5. William M. Wright born abt. 1820/1821. Bought land in Benton Co. MO, 1848, 1855, 1856 and 1858.
      6. Mary M. Wright born January 30, 1822 Sumner Co. TN, died August 29, 1838 Sumner Co. TN. Buried at the Family Cem with parents at Desha Creek.
      7. Gideon Wright born abt. 1824, a minor in 1843 when land was sold.
      8. George M. Wright born abt. 1826 Sumner Co. TN, a minor in 1843. Went to Benton Co. MO. Died in 1886 in Benton Co. MO. Married Eliza FULLER. His will is dated Jan. 6, 1886. Children were: Nancy DUNN, Elderenda TODD, Robert T. WRIGHT, Felix G. WRIGHT, and Martha STADLEMAN.
      9. Gabrella Wright born abt. 1828 Sumner Co. TN. Married on November 17, 1847 to Wm. HANES. Hanes bought land in Benton Co. MO in 1841, 1847, and 1848.
