Towell and John Towell was a brother of Isaac Towell of Sumner County, Tennessee and I

Franklin 20th November 1843
I again take up my pen to correspond with my brother
Samuel.
In vain have I searched the Post Office for a leter from him as
anxious as I have been and continue to be, to correspond with and keep up with those sacred
feeling of brotherly love and the ties of consanguinity that should ever characterize brothers and
sisters and relations. It is very seldom I receive an epistle from Samuel, and seldomer from Jessee.
Since I located in this place I addressed letters to all my corresponding relations requesting them
to direct their letters to this office but few have I received yet. I (have been) crossed out- am very
anxious to write to Brother Jessee if I knew where to direct my letter so that he would get it. But
I am induced to believe many of my letters have been lost or I should receive more answers to
them.
Since writing my last to you I have been to visit my friends in
Sumner, have had my family with me part of the time but they are in Sumner at this time. I
received a letter from my wife a day or two past, informing of the reception of your letter by
William Whitworth & also of the health of our friends. Williams wife (Nancy) is in a very bad
state of health. Robt West Family Group starts to Mississippi in three weeks (moves). I suppose
William will answer yours and give you the particulars as I for-bear.
In Brother Williams last (received the past week) from
Illinois, he informs me that there has been much sickness the past season and many deaths among
my _patients and employers who have been in the necessity of calling on the regular
POGSOPEPS(?) or have no doctors this _ me very much to see "washed sow retu_ to her
wallow." I have long since made up my mind to die a natural death that is, I will not eat nor drink
myself to death- nor take poisons that will kill me.
Since my last to you I have take(n) a partner in the practice
with me he is an accomplished young man a good collegiate education, raised in Illinois and read
medicine with me before taking lecture.
Since coming to Franklin I have done business enough to pay
expenses and a little more. I have not set up housekeeping for myself for want of means to
fillup(?) having left a part of Illinois. But believe I shall begin on the new in three or four
weeks.
I had the misfortune to loose my horse last week which left
me very flat on foot, but one horse is sufficient to do all our country practice at present and I shall
as soon as I can see myself in the horse-price-and pay I do not grieve at the loss as he was the first
horse of mine that ever died, and better been the horse than the owner. My motto is to do my duty
and abide the consequences. Observe the physciological laws of our nature, and we need not fear
the analysis of animal matter.
At the last September term of the White County Court Eli
Pitchford was appointed conservator for Father, he being incapable of managing his own concerns
and having some property. they (Father & Mother) live with William.
With much Brotherly
feeling. I. Towell
