Stephen STONE, the grandfather of Stephen Stone (1811 - 1867) was born in 1750, Caroline Co,
VA. He married Kezziah A. _.
His application for a Revoluntionary War pension follows:
Stephen Stone, a resident citizen of said county, aged 82 years, who being first duly sworn, does
on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of an act of Congress,
passed the 7th June 1832.
That the applicant entered the services, first in the year 1776 or 1777 in Hanover County,
Virginia, as a drafted militia man for the term of three months.
That he joined his company at the Hanover Court Court House and was commanded by Capt.
William Winston and was marched from there down to Williamsburg, and was stationed there
until his term of service expired and he was discharged.
After this applicant was drafted for the term of three months each as many as four times, and
there being no man at home with his family he was discharged;
And again in the year 1780 he was drafted for the term of three months and was mustered into
service in Richmond, Virginia, that the company he belonged to was commanded by Capt.
Hardeman and he does not recollect his given name or regiment or field officer, he does not know
what became of his discharge.
That he was born in Caroline County, Virginia, 1750.
That he resided in Hanover County, Virginia, when he entered the service.
That he removed from Hanover County to Sumner County, Tennessee, where he now resides and
has lived for more than thirty years.
And the said Court hereby declares their opinion after the Interrogation of the matter and after
putting the Questions prepared by the War Department.
That the above Stephen Stone was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and served as he states,
and the Court further certifies it appears to them that Joseph B. Wynn who signs the preceding
certificate is a clergyman residing in Wilson County, Tennessee, and that Alonzo H. Douglas and
John Swaney who have also signed there, and resident in Sumner County, are creditalbe persons,
and that their statements are entitiled to credit.
His obiturary by Mr. Gaskill, from the Union Paper, Gallatin Tennessee, Friday, April 27,
1838:
Three children came with Stephen Stone to Sumner County:
Dolly Stone who married Walter LOVING, lic. obt. April 23, 1806 Sumner County. She died
about 1839. Children: Henry H. Loving, John P. Loving, Evaline Loving.
William Nicholas Stone (1788-1855) married Elizabeth (Betsey) LOVING, lic. obt. February 24,
1808 Sumner County.
The Lovings seem to have been children of Henry LOVING of Sumner County. From the Sumner
County Deed Books we have evidence to support relationships.
John O. Stone of Ferndale, Michigan, indicates that Henry LOVING had four children: Betty,
Walter, Mary, William.
William Nicholas STONE, the father of Stephen Stone (1811-1867_ was born in Virginia in 1788
and died in Sumner County November 15, 1857, aged 69 yr 11 mo; he married February, 1808 to
Elizabeth (Betsey) LOVING who was born in North Carolina in 1792 and died in Sumner County
September 28, 1858, aged 66 yr. They had fourteen children.

Zachariah BRAZIOR (December 19, 1812 - March 29, 1846); from Census Records her children
appear to be: Green, James, William, Zachariah, Orville D, and Elizabeth. It seems that her sister
Lucinda Stone stayed with them and raised the younger children after she died.
Sophia STONE (August 3, 1814 - September 5, 1885) married January 17, 1833 to John R.
BALCH (October 11, 1810 - July 20, 1892); from Census Records her children appear to be:
Catherine, Elizabeth, William, Alfred N., Susan Eliza, Martha, Nancy, Jane, John, Joseph. The
names is sometimes BAULCH.
Frankie STONE (November 6, 1816 - November 1835) a daughter.
Lucinda STONE (August 30, 1818 - May 12, 1880?) unmarried.

Kezziah A. STONE (January 7, 1824 - February 6, 1863) married July 16, 1848 to a JERNIGAN.
J. M. (1851 - 1898) and O. D. may be her children.
William M. STONE (January 22, 1826 - ) married September 6, 1856 to Jane HIGGASON;
children: William, Ellen, Josie, Lizzie, John R., Nora, Sally.
Fountain P. STONE (January 22, 1828 - November 2, 1857) a son.

Harvey DUKE (born about 1829.
Alexander G. STONE (July 8, 1834 - December 3, 1878) married; 1st October 7, 1858 to Martha

James Thomas STONE (March 20, 1837 - November 14, 1859); he mentions all his brothers and
sisters except Mary S. (Polly) Stone BRAZIOR, died November 7, 1859, Frankie Stone, and
Fountain P. Stone.
John WARD, the grandfather of Mary Ann Denney Stone, was born 1754 and died September 7,
1846, at the age of 92 in Arkansas. His wife was Roxy Lainye (Rocksolany, etc.) Carnegia who
was born February 12, 1766 and died March 18, 1812. They had seventeen children, born and
raised in Ward Hollow, now owned by Jim Stone, where William and Wandalene live. (This
information from Frances Waller). Hubert Ward said John and Roxy Lainye Carnegia Ward came
from Ireland through North Carolina. The 1850 Smith County Census gives William DENNEY
born North Carolina, wife Charlotte Ward Denney born Tennessee, so seems likley that is correct.
The children:
Jim WARD - born 1782.
Bryant WARD - born 1786, died 1872, married September 23, 1809 to Polly WINN, no children;
married Mary Tinley MURPHY who had three children by previous marriage: Andrew Murphy,
John Murphy, and Fannie Murphy KIRBY. Bryant and Mary Ward had one son James Bryant
Ward who married Tabitha F. STONE.
Luke WARD - born April 22, 1789, died 1811.
John WARD - born 1790
Matthew WARD
Marshall WARD
Wiley WARD
Ellis WARD
Jack WARD
Louis WARD
Cynthia WARD
Tylithia WARD
Nancy WARD - married Pink LOWE.
Tabitha WARD - married JOHNSON
Malinda WARD - married NELSON from Arkansas.
Lottie WARD - married Buck DENNEY.
William (Buck) DENNEY, the father of Mary Ann DENNEY STONE, was born in North
Carolina about 1795 and died in Smith County, Tennessee, in 1852 or January 1853. His wife,
Charoltte WARD was born in Tennessee about 1804. The 1850 Smith County Census shows him
as 55, her 46, daughter Frances 17. They had five children.
Mary Ann DENNEY m. Stephen STONE.
William C. (Bill) DENNEY married May 29, 1851, to Drucilla G. BRADLEY Smith County
Records. His children were: William BRADLEY (who married Josephine ALLEN and was father
of Herman WALTER, Gertrude, Randolph, Archie, Allen, and Nannie Edward Hughes), Edward,
Marshall, Lewis, Walter R. and Mollie.
Carroll W. DENNEY died 1894, born about 1825, married Josphine _. The 1850 Smith County
Census shows him Sam (father of Sam and Eddie), Hughlette, John Callie, Carroll, Lillie, and
Mary (Mattie) BEARD (mother of Callie CUTRELL and Jose GREGORY).
Harriet DENNEY married an UNDERWOOD.
Frances DENNEY born about 1833 married November 15, 1850 to Burton UNDERWOOD. Her
children were: Bertie OWENS, Johnathon, Clarency, Vantrease, Charlotte, Barton, and Emma
BRADLEY.
Statement by Chester STONE, June 1, 1956
They further show (Book Y p 110) that Stephen STONE bought from the Executors of Jacob
DICO deceased 250 acres of land lying on both sides of the road from Rome to Hartsville and
bounded on South by WARD, East by BURTON, North by Robert ALLEN, and DICO, and west
by DOUGLAS, also bought about this time shown in Book Z, p. 191, 33 acres from Francis
CUNNINGHAM, and in Book Z p. 310, from Frances CUNNINGHAM, 83 acres which is now
the Jim H. STONE place, and part of the Hubert WARD place, part of the Ellen STONE place,
and part of hte Marshall STONE home place.
Knowing that Stephen's eldest son, Wm. N. STONE later lived and died on the first place bought
by Stephen STONE, I assume that when Stephen STONE later bought the larger place that he
sold the smaller place to his son Wm. N. STONE.
I further assume that since Stephen STONE bought this larger tract of land just a few years after
the will of his wife's father Wm. DENNEY that the money she inherited from her father's estate
helped in this cause, also at about this time in 1854 Book Z p. 328, shows that Stephen STONE
bought two slaves from Johnson UNDERWOOD, who I suppose was his brother-in-law.
Family of Stephen STONE (son of Wiliam Nicholas STONE and Elizabeth LOVING), born
January 14, 1811, died May 19, 1867). Married November 25, 1835 to Mary Ann DENNEY,
(daughter of William DENNEY and Charlotte WARD born 1821, died 1870 or later).

While we treasure a remembrance of the amiable virtures and brillant talents of the Statesman and
divine who has slept the sleep of death, we would not forget those who are justly called the bone
and sinue of society (viz) the honest farmer Stephen Stone, Senr., the subject of this memoir living
to the advanced age of 88 years - 40 of which was spent in the service of God. He lived during
that time an acceptable member of the Methodist Church - so living to constain those around him
to acknowledge him, not only the honest man, but the Christian, and finished his race on the 16th
day of April, in full assurance of the inheritance which awaited him at the right hand of God.

was probated and that he left to his two sons Wm. C. DENNEY and Carroll W. DENNEY his

Ann STONE, being my grandmother, his slaves, money, and personal property.
Further in the year 1844 Will Book 10, p. 38 shows that Jacob DICE in his will made mention of
