First Generation

1.  Solomon BARNES was born in December 1762 in Bertie Co, NC.  According to his Revolutionary War pension application he moved to Sumner Co, TN in December of 1799.  He resided in Sumner until 1831.  In 1831 he moved to Madison Co, Mississippi where he died on October 30, 1833.  He is probably buried in Mississippi.

Solomon was married at least once and had several children.  The name of his wife is unknown to me as are the names of his other children:

        +2          i.   Wright BARNES (born about 1782).

2.  Wright BARNES was born about 1782 in Bertie Co, NC.  He moved to Sumner Co, TN with his father in 1799 as he is not found in the 1800 North Carolina census.  Wright married before 1805.  The name of his first wife is unknown.  She died before 1812.  Wright married 2 more times.  He died at about age 54 in July or August 1836 in Sumner Co, TN.  He wrote his will on July 2, 1836 and died shortly thereafter as his estate was probated in September 1836.

Wife Nancy & my four children:  William, Jane, Samuel, Joel.

Four oldest children: Elizabeth, Nancy, Polly, Zachariah already given portion.

EX:  Solomon Shoulders (The Sholar / Shoulders family were long time friends of the Barnes family in Bertie Co, NC)

Wright BARNES had the following children:

        +3          i.   Elizabeth (Betsey) BARNES (born about 1805).

        +4         ii.   Nancy BARNES (born about 1805).

        +5         iii.   Mary (Polly) BARNES.

        +6        iv.   Zachariah BARNES (born about 1808).

Wright BARNES and Kitty STONE were married on September 20, 1812 in Sumner Co, TN.  Kitty STONE died before 1825 in Sumner Co, TN. 

Wright and Kitty had the following children:

        +7          i.   Lewis BARNES (born about 1813).

          8         ii.   James BARNES was born between 1810 and 1820 in Sumner Co, TN.

          9         iii.   Thomas BARNES was born between 1810 and 1820 in Sumner Co, TN.

      +10        iv.   Araminta (Arminter) BARNES (born between 1815 and 1819).

Wright BARNES and Nancy DOUGHTRY OR DAUGHTRY were married on November 5, 1825 in Sumner Co, TN.  Nancy DOUGHTRY OR DAUGHTRY was born about 1805 in North Carolina.  She died after 1870 as she was living with her son Samuel and his family in that year’s census.  

Wright and Nancy had the following children:

        11          i.   William BARNES was born about 1827 in Sumner Co, TN.  (This is not the William C Barnes found later in Gibson Co, IN.  From the placement in the will, and the fact that Nancy had 4 children between 1825 and 1830, I think that William is one of the younger children.  He was still living with Nancy in Sumner Co in 1850 when the other William is in Indiana with his family.)

      +12         ii.   Jane BARNES (born between 1825 and 1830).

      +13         iii.   Samuel H. BARNES (born abt 1830).

        14        iv.   Son BARNES was born between 1825 and 1830 in Sumner Co, TN.  He died after 1830 and before 1836 in Sumner Co, TN.  He is not mentioned in his father’s will.

        15         v.   Joel H BARNES was born in June 1834 in Sumner Co, TN.  He lived in McMinn Co, TN in 1900.

3.  Elizabeth (Betsey) BARNES was born about 1805 in Sumner Co, TN.

Elizabeth (Betsey) and Wiley COOK were married on May 5, 1822 in Sumner Co, TN.  John Underwood was the bondsman.  They lived in Morgan Co, IL in 1830 and had moved to St Clair Co, Missouri by 1850.  Wiley COOK was born about 1790 in North Carolina. 

Elizabeth (Betsey) and Wiley had the following children:

        16          i.   Louisa COOK was born in 1831 in Illinois.

        17         ii.   Joel COOK was born in 1835 in Illinois.

        18         iii.   Wiley COOK was born in 1837 in Illinois.

4.  Nancy BARNES was born about 1805 in Sumner Co, TN.

Nancy and Benjamin COOK were married on May 7, 1825 in Sumner Co, TN.  Family friend Solomon Shoulders was the bondsman.  They lived in Morgan Co, IL in 1830.  Benjamin COOK was born between 1800 and 1810.

5.  Mary (Polly) BARNES was born in Sumner Co, TN.  Her father's will referred to Polly.  Since Polly is often a nickname for Mary I have paired her with this Sumner Co, TN marriage. Mary (Polly) BARNES and Archabald E MANSKER were married on May 27, 1824 in Sumner Co, TN. 

6.  Zachariah BARNES was born about 1808 in Sumner Co, TN. Zachariah BARNES and Elizabeth JOSS were married on June 14, 1828 in Sumner Co, TN. 

7.  Lewis BARNES was born about 1813 in Sumner Co, TN.  He died before 1860 in Sumner Co, TN.

Lewis BARNES and Rhoda ? were married about 1834 in Sumner Co, TN.  Rhoda was born between 1805 and 1810 in Tennessee.

10.  Araminta (Arminter) BARNES was born between 1815 and 1819 in Sumner Co, TN.

Araminta (Arminter) BARNES and James W RAGAN were married on May 4, 1843 in Sumner Co, TN. 

12.  Jane BARNES was born between 1825 and 1830 in Sumner Co, TN. Jane BARNES and John Z DODD were married on February 10, 1846 in Sumner Co, TN. 

13.  Samuel H BARNES was born in 1830 in Sumner Co, TN.  Samuel and Martha E BARTON were married on January 20, 1853 in Sumner Co, TN.  Martha was born in 1837 in Tennessee. In the 1860 Sumner Co census, Samuel, his wife and children, and his mother are living with Elizabeth Pollard.  Elizabeth is age 70, a “fisherwoman,” and she was born in NC.  In 1870, Samuel and his family along with mother Nancy, 95-year-old John Cartwright, and 10-year-old Ebba Barnes are living together in Sumner Co.   (He has no son named Matthew.  I have seen him listed as the father of Matthew Wright Barnes but he is not his father.  “Mathew Barns,” age 11, is living with Ann Eskin in Wilson Co, TN in 1870)
