William Norvell and Mary Payne

Mary Payne was born 4 Sep 1783 in Virginia and she married 8 Sep 1801 to William Norvell and her brother Dudley Payne posted bond for this marriage in Botetourt County Virginia. She and William came to Sumner (purchased land on middle fork of Red River in 1805) County shortly after their marriage, probably at the same time her father moved his family there. In 1828 they moved to Macoupin County Illinois where they lived out their lives. William was born 4 Aug 1771 in and possibly was the son of William and Susan Norvell of Goochland County, he served in the war of 1812 and in April of 1830 he served on the Grand Jury in Carlinville. He died 24 Jan 1833 in Macoupin County. All their children were born in Sumner County Tennessee before they went to Illinois.

  1. Elizabeth b. 20 Feb 1803 in Robertson County, d. 1803 in Robertson County.

  2. James b. 14 Feb 1804, m. 1st 4 Nov 1834 to Lavina Harris, m. 2nd to Sarah Walker, d. 1870 in Macoupin County.
    James was born 14 Feb 1804 in Sumner County Tennessee and he died in 1870 at Macoupin County Illinois. James was twice married, 1st was 4 Nov 1834 at Carlinville, Illinois to Lavina Harris who died before 1850 and his 2nd marriage to Sarah Walker was before 1850 also.

  3. Nancy b. 2 Sep 1805, d. 23 Nov 1884.

  4. Spencer b. 14 Nov 1806, m. 1st Emily Ross, m. 2nd Mary A. _________, d. 29 Jan 1879 in Macoupin County.
    Spencer was born 14 Nov 1806 in Sumner County Tennessee and he died 29 Jan 1879 in Macoupin County Illinois. He served for Macoupin County in the Black Hawk War Rendezvous at Beardstown the 22 Apr 1832. He was twice married the 1st time to Emily M. Ross of Sumner County Tennessee who died 9 Aug 1845 in Macoupin County, his 2nd was to Mary A. ______ who was born in Kentucky in 1824.

  5. Matilda b. 30 Sep 1809, m. 22 Feb 1835 to Oswell Horton, d. 28 Aug 1884.
    Matilda was born 30 Sep 1809 in Sumner County Tennessee and she died in 1844 and is buried in the Blue Grass (Horton) Cemetery at Morgan County Illinois. She married in Morgan County to Oswell Horton on 22 Feb 1835. He was born 26 May 1809 in Fauquier County Virginia to Augustus Horton and Mary Taylor. He went to Green County Kentucky in 1811 and to Morgan County Illinois in 1831.

  6. Mary b. 4 Mar 1811, m. Isaac Yarnell.

  7. Rebecca b. 4 Nov 1812, m. 16 May 1833 to Hugh Smith, d. 5 Sep 1887 in Crawford County, Kansas.
    The following is a history that was written by Esther Vernatti about Rebecca and her descendants.
    Rebecca was born 4 Nov 1812 in Sumner County Tennessee and she died 5 Sep 1887 at Girard, Crawford County Kansas. She is buried with her husband in Dumbauld Cemetery. On 16 May 1833 Rebecca married a widower, Hugh Smith, who had five small children, one an infant. Hugh was the son of Robert and Margaret Smith and he was born in 1795 at Lebanon, Wilson Co. Tennessee where with his parents, brothers and sisters, and his 1st wife Betsy Roach are listed as members of Suggs Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Mt. Juliet, Wilson Co. So besides raising nine of her own children she helped raise the 5 from Hugh's first marriage. About 1871 Hugh, Rebecca with seven of the children, including 2 daughters from the first marriage and their families went to Girard, Crawford County, Kansas where Hugh received land from services in the War of 1812 and the Seminole Indian Wars.

  9. John b. 30 Apr 1815, m. 1st Marie S. Harris, m. 2nd Emma Martin, d. Macoupin County, Illinois.

  10. William b. 1 Dec 1816, d. 26 Dec 1889 in Macoupin County, Illinois.

  11. Hugh b. 4 Nov 1819, d. 1 Jan 1863. on a hospital boat on the Miss. River, a private in Co A 32nd Reg. Ill. Vol. Inf.

  12. Sarah b. 30 Jan 1821, m. Henry Davidson, d. 5 May 1895 in Macoupin County, Illinois.
    Sarah Norvell was born in Sumner County Tennessee 30 Jan 1820 and she married 5 Jan 1845 at Palmyra, Macoupin County Illinois to Henry Davidson. She died 5 May 1895 at Modesto, Macoupin County Illinois and is buried with Henry at the Horton Cemetery in Macoupin County Illinois.

    Henry Davidson was born 15 Sep 1816 in Alabama the son of Joshua Davidson of Virginia and Elizabeth Sharp of North Carolina. He died 12 Sep 1885 at Modesto, Macoupin County Illinois. Henry and Sarah lived their entire married lives on their home place, 2 miles east of Modesto, the Horton Cemetery is across the road from their farmstead. Henry served in the Civil War entering with the rank of Captain and was discharged as a Major after serving 3 years he served with Sherman at the battle for Atlanta.

  13. Caroline b. 4 Aug 1825, m. Alexander Davidson, d. 23 Nov 1923 in Macoupin County, Illinois.
    Caroline was born 4 Aug 1825 in Sumner Co., Tennessee and she was married the 16 Oct 1843 to Alexander Davidson he being born 3 Mar 1821 in Alabama and he died 3 Nov 1862 at Boliver, Tennessee after having just enlisting in the 32nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, he contacted Typhoid Fever and is buried at the Corinth National Cemetery at Corinth Mississippi. Caroline died 23 Nov 1920 at Springfield, Illinois and is buried in the Girard Cemetery.
