Levi Summers
Levi Summers was born in 1790 in Guilford, N.C. Levi's father was Joseph SUMMERS
(sometimes known as James Joseph SUMMERS).
Joseph SUMMERS married Mary JACKSON in Guilford County, NC in 1774. Joseph
SUMMERS wrote on his pension application that he had no written record of his birth or of his
revolutionary war service time, but as near as he could determine he was born in Kent Co,
Delaware in 1746. He added "My memory is treacherous." Then he described his revolutionary
war experiences as near as he could remember. He signed his name with an X. His application
was accepted, and he received a pension.
His son, Levi SUMMERS, moved from Guilford County, N.C. to Sumner County, TN., and
there he married Louisa Hatchett in 1817. Louisa probably died in childbirth because after Levi
married Polly PRICE in January of 1820. There is a female child under five years of age in their
household on the 1820 census which was taken that summer. The child must have been born to
Levi's first wife, Louisa Hatchett.
Levi appears on the 1830 census in Franklin County, Illinois. His age in 1830 was listed as 40-50.
His wife's age was 30-40. By this we know that Polly was not a teen aged bride. This is about
all we do know about her. On the record of their son, Peter F. Summers' third marriage, his
parents are given as Levi Summers and Mary Price. That's the only time we see her listed as Mary
rather than Polly . The name Mary opens up so many possible nicknames. Some of them are
Molly, Mamie, Mame, Marie, Minnie, Pol, and Polly.
On the 1840 census in Williamson County, Illinois, Levi appears with one son age 5-10, and two
sons age 10 -15. We suspect one of the sons to be Robert SUMMERS and another to be Levi
Franklin SUMMERS.
Polly (Mary) must have died by this time because there is no female aged 40-50 on the 1840
census. Another probable case of death in childbirth. They had seven or eight children by that
time and poor medical attention.
Joseph PRICE was witness to a deed of gift of land to the Station Camp Baptist Church, Sumner
Co. in 1800.
He owned 100 acres of land on Station Camp Creek in 1820.
In 1808 a Joseph PRICE worked on the road from George HUMPHREY'S ferry to William
CURLEWS'. This info is from a book entitled "RED RIVER SETTLERS" by Edythe
Whitley.
There is a PRICE'S MEADOW (later called PRICE'S MILL) over the border in Wayne Co,
KY., but we didn't find him on the KY census. Nor did we find him on any census in 1840.

The only man on the Sumner County Census of the right age to have been the father of Polly
PRICE on the 1820 census is Joseph PRICE. He was 26-45 at that time. There was also a
woman in his household aged over 45.
In 1830 Joseph PRICE appears in Jackson County, TN. His age on the census there is 50-60.
There is a Polly PRICE listed in the minutes of Spring Creek Baptist Church of Jackson County,
TN page 22. It says "March the first Saturday 1818. The church met and after Sermon
proceeded to business dismissed, Sister Polly Price by letter.
