Lewis Crain (Crane)

Lewis Crain was born in 1761 or 1762 in Va or SC. His mothers name was Elizabeth. He died 7 Sept 1827 in Sumner County.

Along with Amos Eaton, and his father-in-Law, Isaac Lindsey, Lewis Crain was one of the advance scouts who founded Eatons Station (Heaton's Station). Eaton, Lindsey, Lewis Crain, his brother John Crain , and his step father Moses Winters, had all served in the "Rear Guard of the Revolution" during the Revolutionary War. John Crain and Moses Winters settled near Coopertown in Robertson County. Lewis Crain's 640 acres lay in Sandy Bend of the Cumberland river.

Children of Lewis Crain are (all of his children were born in Sumner County):

  1. Susannah born in 1782, was born at Eaton's Station. Susannah is buried in the Baptist Cemetary in Lively Grove, Ill. She lived until 9 Dec 1855. Marrried first to William C. Crain, married 2nd to Henry Wright.
  2. Elizabeth born in 1784 married Fletcher Sullivan in 1805.
  3. John born in 1787. He was one of the famous child evangelists during the religious revival after the New Madrid earthquake. At the age of 12 he began preaching the gospel and died in his early 20's as a circuit riding preacher on the Green River circuit.
  4. William B born in 1794 married Nancy Rascoe and remained near Nashville.
  5. Ezekiel born on 14 Feb 1795 married Nancy Haw and moved to Cape Girardeau, MO.
  6. Caleb born on 17 Sept 1799 married Lucretia Barkley and moved to Cape Girardeau, MO.


Susannah married her second cousin, William C. Crain, and had 4 sons by him. William died 3 months prior to the birth of his last son, William Lindsey Crain, in 1816. Susannah later married Henry Wright in 1820 and in about 1828 they relocated to Washington County, Illinois. After the Civil War 3 of the boys, John, Lewis Wesley, and William L relocated to LaBette County, Ks. The fourth boy, Isaac Newton Crain, relocated to Higginsville, MO. The decendents of these 4 boys still hold regular reunions and are located in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
