John D. Gregory (son of William Gregory and Mary "Polly" Epperson Gregory) was born in
1808. In 1861 he enlisted in Nashville, Tn. as a private in Company B 18th Tennessee
Confederate Infantry which was composed of Sumner Co. men and he trained at Camp
Trousdale. According to his military records he died in the Confederate Camp at Bowling Green,
Kentucky in 1861. His records state that he was in a hospital before he died. In a 1955 newspaper
article written by Cal Gregory of Smith County, Tennessee family legend states that John was
accidentally scalded to death. When soldiers died at this camp if they were claimed their bodies
were sent home and if not they were buried in Bowling Green in several different locations. We
do not know exactly what happened to John but with the help of Mr. Stephen Lynn King of the
Bowling Green Sons Of Confederate Veterans a memorial marker was set up for John at the
unknown Confederate section of the Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green, Warren County,
Kentucky in June of 2003.
