Hamilton Genealogy
1. HANSFORD1 HAMILTON married SARAH HENDERSON.
Children of HANSFORD HAMILTON and SARAH HENDERSON are:
2. i. THOMAS2 HAMILTON, b. 1725, Ireland; d. Aft. 1805, Sumner Co., Tennessee.
ii. HANCE HAMILTON, d. 1778, In Virginia in the Revolutionary War.
2. THOMAS2 HAMILTON (HANSFORD1) was born 1725 in Ireland, and died Aft.
1805 in Sumner Co., Tennessee. He married JANE MCCRAKEN Bef. 1750 in
Ireland. She was born 1725 in Ireland, and died 1803 in Hamilton Station, Sumner
Co., Tennessee. Notes for THOMAS HAMILTON: The following information was produced by
Willie Flowers Carlisle, December 1936: This paper was submitted by Vaden McDonald, cousin
and researcher in Georgia.
"The Hamiltons became numerous in Scotland and North Ireland, many of whom immigrated to America in the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of the North Carolina Hamiltons were of Scotch-Irish descent."
THOMAS HAMILTON
"Tracing of Thomas Hamilton has been mostly done through land grants and
warrants, for services in the Continental Army, obtained from the Land Grant Office
of North Carolina, and from a family history written by a grandson. Thomas Hamilton
married Jane McCraken in Ireland. Two children were born and died in Ireland. He
and his wife immigrated to America about 1750 and settled in North Carolina. Three
sons, Hance, James, Robert and three daughters were born in North Carolina.
Thomas Hamilton served in Captain Vernon's Company, North Carolina Troops,
during the Revolutionary War. Hance, a physician, joined the army in 1776 and
either died or was killed in 1778. A warrant for 4,800 acres of land on the South side
of the Cumberland River in Davidson County, Tennessee, was assigned to Thomas
Hamilton, Hier of Hance Hamilton, for military Service was entered on 1793. James
Hamilton had Military Warrant for land on the North Side of the Cumberland River.
Robert received permission, and went as a missionary among the Indians in 1794.
James and his father seemed to have stayed together, as they were found in Guilford
County, North Carolina, in Sumner County and Humphreys County, Tennessee, by
census reports. From a history of West Tennessee, "Thomas Hamilton, a
Revolutionary Soldier, buried in Carroll County, had never applied for a pension, his
war service found in old documents," but the date of his death was not given. "
Notes: From Richard Wilson:
"The naming of Martha Hamilton and Anne Hamilton as children is based on there
being two unidentified daughters as per grandson Thomas recollection. He most
assuredly knew Elizabeth Shaw as she is the one who lived to be 101 years of age.
On Oct 13, 1794 - Sumner County, Tennessee deed book 1, page 110 - it states that
Thomas Hamilton Sr. made an indenture with Robert Hamilton - witnesses were King
Carr and Robert Shaw. I could find no other Hamiltons living in this vicinity who
would have had daughters marrying in 1789 and 1793. The only other Hamilton to
be married in this time frame was John Hamilton who married Isabell Snoddy March
13 1794 in Sumner County. I find no indication that he was one of our Hamilton's,
based on the marriage date, I suppose it could have been possible."
According to the Patriot List of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Thomas
Hamilton was called out with the Minute Men of Guilford County to fight in the Battle
of Guilford County Courthouse with Captain Vernon's Company. His son Thomas
Hamilton, Jr., fought in the Revolution with General Francis Marion, the "Swamp
Fox." Another son, James Hamilton, also served in the Revolution, enlisting with the
Continental Army in November 1778 and serving until after the surrender of
Cornwallis in 1781.

Migrated: 1833, To Texas Notes for JAMES L. LATIMER: Notes: From Article written by
Dottie Bolton Williams, Van Dorn Craddock Jr., Mrs. W.D. Armstrong, Mary Henry Dalton,
Jessica Patterson in " A History of Red River County" "James L. Latimer moved his family to
Carroll County, TN. They left there in 1833 with family which included 11 of the 15 children and
over 50 slaves and came to Texas. Bringing their possessions in an ox cart, they only made ten or
twelve miles a day. They crossed Red River at the mouth of Mill Creek and settled at Pecan Point
or Round Grove about 5 miles east of present Clarksville. Jane's brother, Robert Hamilton, and
his family accompanied them to Texas." "Farm Tools, plows, hand looms, fruit trees and seeds
and other things needed to build homes in the new country were brought with them. Of the 50
slaves, some were servants, field hands, carpenters, house servants, even Gabriel, expert in
tanning leather and as a shoemaker." "The women helped in so many ways to settle the new
country. They carded wool and cotton, spun thread for winter clothing while the men built and
worked preparing crops. These pioneers from the timbered country of TN were fascinated by the
prairie with their acres of tall grass waving in the wind and the scattered Bois d'Arc
trees loaded with apples. There was an abundance of wild game of every kind.
Once when facing a shortage of lard, they were saved from a trip to a market
perhaps 30 miles away by the advice of an old Henry Stout from MO. who appeared
one day "Heck, you don't have to go to Jefferson after lard, I can take you up into the
canebrakes on Red River where you can kill all the black bears you need, They're fat
and will make more and better lard than you can buy anywhere in the country."
"The young men were strong for a bear hunt, so it was arranged. They were off early
and he made good his boast, for they brought back 5 black bears that weighed from
400 to 600 pounds."
"The Latimers prospered during the next few years, and they opened up new farms
and increased their cotton acreage, selling cotton for 6 cents a pound in Jefferson,
the nearest market."

05, 1796 in Hamilton Station, Sumner Co, Tennessee, and died March 17, 1876 in Near
Clarksville, Red River Co., Texas. He married ELIZABETH BETHEY BETHEA 1815 in
Tennessee. She was born September 05, 1799 in South Carolina, and died
September 05, 1879 in Texas.
Notes for ROBERT SHAW HAMILTON: Special Thanks to Vaden McDonald for contributing
this paper to our research and for the research he has done: These notes are quoted from the
research paper of the Hamilton Family by Willie Flowers Carlisle, December 1936:
"Robert, son of James and Jane Gwin Hamilton, was born in Hamilton's Station,
Sumner County, Tennessee, July 5, 1796. Robert was sent to Scotland for his education.
Returning home in 1812 he learned
upon reaching New York that war had been declared between Great Britian and the
United States. He joined Captain Craig's Company, Tennessee Militia, Sept 1814
and was in the Battles of New Orleans during December 1814 an January 1815.
About 1815 he married Elizabeth Bethea, who was born September 5, 1799. He
taught school for several years and in 1833 or 1834 moved to Texas with his wife, six
sons, one daughter, a nephew Morgan Carter and the Latimer families and settled on
the Pecan Bayou in Red River County, Texas, where he purchased 1028 acres of
land. Some of his descendants still live on this land. One of the first acts of the
Hamilton and Latimer families was to establish the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian
Church, they having been members of the Shiloh Church at McKenzie, Carroll
County, Tennessee. The Rev. Milton Estill was the first pastor of this church.
In 1833, he was sent as a delegate to Washington on the Brazos, where he
signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and was on the committee that wrote
the constitution for the new Republic. In April 1836, he was one of the emissaries
sent to Washington D.C.. In June 1836, he joined Captain Elliot;'ss Company but did
not see active service, except in Indian raids. In 1841, he was chose Colonel in the
1st Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers, an Brigadier General in 1844. In 1838 he
signed his name Robert S. Hamilton to his application for a head-right certificate, and
after that date always added the "S" to his signature. He was elected Sheriff of Red
River County in 1858, his last public office. He died March 17, 1876, and was buried
in the old Shiloh Cemetery, near Clarksville, Texas. His wife Elizabeth Hamilton died
September 5, 1879, and is buried beside him.
RESOURCES AND REFERENCES ON ROBERT HAMILTON:
"I am aware that an early historian gave Scotland as the birth place of Robert
Hamilton, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. After a search of several
years, I am convinced the following data (on the Hamilton Family) is correct. This
information has been gathered from the older residents of Red River County, Texas,
who remembered him, from Pat Clark of Clarksville, Texas; Randolph Clark, founder
of Addran College who knew him, the Veterans Administration; the Adjutant Generals
Office; the General Land Office at Austin, Probate records in several Texas counties
and family records. His mother gave his name as Rober Jr., and the Adjutant
Generals Office has his war record of 1814 and 1815 as Robert. In no instance did I
find a record of Robert S. until 1838. At that time another Hamilton was in Texas
buying land certificates, as court records of Red River County and the Supreme
Court of Texas show. That, and the fact he had a son named Robert was reason he
had for adding the middle name Shaw."
Re: The Texas Declaration of Independence (1)
American Expeditions and Settlements:
By the early 19th cent. Americans were covetously eyeing Texas, especially after
the Louisiana Purchase (1803) had extended the U.S. border to that fertile
wilderness. Attempts to free Texas from Spanish rule were made in the expeditions
of the adventurers Gutierrez and Magee (1812-13) and James Long (1819). In 1821
Moses Austin secured a colonization grant from the Spanish authorities in San
Antonio. He died form the rigors of his return trip from that distant outpost, but his son
Stephen F. Austin, had the grant confirmed and in December 1821 led 300 families
across the Sabine River to the region between the Brazos and Colorado rivers, where
they established the first American settlement in Texas. Austin is known as the
father of Texas. The newly independent government of Mexico, pleased with
Austin's prospering colony, readily offered grants to other American promoters and
even gave huge land tracts to individual settlers. Americans from all over the Union,
but particularly from the South, poured into Texas, and within a decade a
considerable number of settlements had been established in Brazoria, Washingtonon-
the Brazos, San Felipe de Austin, Anahuac and Gonzales. The Americans easily
avoided Mexican requirements that all settlers be Roman Catholic, but conflict with
Mexican settlers over land titles resulted in the Fredonian Rebellion (1826-27) By
1830 the Americans outnumbered the Mexican settlers by more than three to one
and had formed their own society. The Mexican government became understandable
concerned. Its sporadic attempts to tighten control over Texas had been hampered
by its own political instability, but in 1830 measures were taken to stop the influx of
Americans. Troops were sent to police the border, close the seaports, occupy the
the towns, and levy taxes on imported goods. The troops were withdrawn in 1832,
when Mexico was again in political upheaval, but Texans, alarmed and hoping to
achieve a greater measure of self-government, petitioned Mexico for separate
statehood (Texas was then part of Coaphuila). When Austin presented the petition in
Mexico City, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna had become military dictator. Austin was
arrested and imprisoned for eighteen months, and Texas was re garrisoned.
Independence from Mexico
The Texas Revolution broke out (1835) in Gonzales when the Mexicans
attempted to disarm the Americans and were routed. The American settlers then
drove all the Mexican troops form Texas, overwhelming each command in Surprise
attacks. At a convention called at Washington-on-the Brazos, Texas declared its
Independence (March 2. 1836). A constitution was adopted and David Burnet was
named interim president. The arrival of Santa Anna with a large army that sough to
crush the rebellion resulted in the famous defense of the Alamo and the massacre of
several hundred Texans captured at Goliad. Santa Anna then divided his huge force
to cover as much territory as possible. The small Texas army, commanded by
Samuel Houston, protected their rear, retreating strategically until Houston finally
maneuvered Santa Anna into a cul-de-sac formed by heavy rains and flooding
bayous, near the site of present-day Houston. In the battle of San Jacinto (April 21,
1836), Houston surprised the larger Mexican force and scored a resounding victory.
Santa Anna was captured and compelled to recognize the independence of Texas.

" Robert Hamilton was born in Scotland in about 1783. He and four of his brothers
came to the United States about 1807 and settled in North Carolina, where they
prospered as businessmen. In 1834 Hamilton severed his connection with the
business interests of his brothers and moved to Pecan Point on Red River, claimed
by both Arkansas and Texas. There, he was elected one of Five delegates to the
Convention of 1836."
"Robert Hamilton, a man of wealth and recognized ability, played a small but
important role in the Texas Revolution. His active participation was confined to a
period of little more than six months, but during this time he signed the Declaration of
Independence, helped to draft the Constitution, and served as one of the two first
representatives appointed by the new Republic to the United States. Had he been
ambitious for a career in public life, his name might have been as indelibly stamped
upon the history of Texas as any of those deemed illustrious in the annals of the
Lone Star Republic. He however, chose to devote his time and talents to the
development of his plantation interest."
"Hamilton was not an uncommon name along Red River during the days of the Texas
Revolution, and it would seem there was no aversion to given name Robert. At any
rate, there were at least three men called Robert Hamilton in Red River County in
1836 which has tended to confuse the search and scramble the facts in the careers
of these men. On Dec. 11, 1936 the Board of Land Commissioners of Red River
County issued Robert Hamilton certificate # 97 which entitled him to 1,280 acres of
public land."
"This Robert Shaw Hamilton, second sheriff of Red River County, prominent on the
local scene for many years and sometimes referred to in later life ad Col. Bob
Hamilton. Another Robert Hamilton, on Nov. 18, 1837, received Bounty Warrant No.
402 for 640 acres of land in Red River County for military service from May 18, 1836
to Nov. 18, 1836. This man has not been further identified but could not have been
Robert Hamilton, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, since he was on
the official mission in the United States during May, June, July and Aug. 1836."
"In the summer of 1843 Hamilton's health having failed, he went to Saratoga
Springs, New York in a vain effort to recuperate. His search for health proved
unavailing an he became seriously ill. Realizing the end was near, he drafted, signed
his will and died the same day, Aug. 16, 1843. Hamilton's place of burial has not
been determined, but there is no evidence to indicate that he was not interred at
Saratoga Springs, New York where diligent search has failed to locate his grave.
There is a Texas Centennial Marker to the memory of Robert Hamilton in the Old
Rowland Cemetery northeast of Clarksville. (This is the only historical marker we
were unable to locate. We went to Bryarly to the Old Rowland Cemetery but could
not look further because of the dense growth.)"
1860 Red River County Census shows his son Thomas S. with family in the
household, along with Joshua White age 33 listed as a laborer With Personal
Property value of 600., born in Alabama. Also in same household was a D.A. Harbin
age 31 born in Kentucky listed as a teacher.
