Bartholomew DURRETT was born in 1716 in England, the son of Bartholomew Durrett and Elizabeth X. JOHNSON. His parents were probably Huguenots who fled France during the early persecution of members of the Protestant religion. It is not known when Bartholomew sailed to America, but the first record of a land purchase was on the Rapidan River in Hanover County, Va. Records indicate that this purchase of land took place on February 9, 1737. He married ? DURRETT and had 6 known children. He died in 1762.

  9. Calvin Durrett, b 1828, Robertson Co. Tn. In the 1850 census, Calvin was single and living at home. It is presumed he never married. From Confederate Records - Sgt. A Co. 27th Inf. C.S.A. last record - wounded Sept 19, 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Lucy W. M. Durrett (daughter of Francis Durrett and Elizabeth Grymes MOORE) married Hamilton ACKERMAN (oral history says that Hamilton Ackerman was lost at sea. Lucy came back to Robertson Co and raised Francis Edmond Durrett's children when her daughter Ann Elizabeth Madeline Durrett died.)

Francis Edmond Durrett (son of William Dawson Moore DURRETT and Nancy TURPIN) was a PVT in A Co. 7th Cavalry BN Sumner Co. He was taken prisoner at Springfield, Tn, Feb 7, 1863, and sent to Louisville and Camp Chase on Feb 26. On March 28, 1863, he was taken to City Point, Va for exchange by order of Col. William Hoffman, Commander General of Prisoners.

At this time, Francis was exposed to an act of mutual respect that forever remained in his thoughts. During his transfer as a prisoner of war, as the captives were crossing a river, he saw a prisoner slip from his horse and float downstream. Francis asked a fellow Confederate why the Sgt. had not stopped this man's escape. He was told that the escapee was a Mason and so was the Sgt. Francis said that if he ever got home, he was going to become a Mason. When he did return home, he split rails to get enough money to join the Masons. He was a Past Master and received his Fifty Year Pin.
