Dr. Humphrey Howell Bate, Sr.
Humphrey Howell BATE, Sr. was born 1 Feb 1844 at the Old Bate Home Place, Castalian
Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee. He died 8 Jun 1911. He died at the Old Bate Home Place
and is buried in the Gallatin Cemetery. His parents were Colonel Humphrey BATE and Anne
Franklin WEATHERRED.
He entered into the Civil War when he was 16 years old. He was wounded at Shiloh 6 Apr 1862.
He was wounded through the neck, left shoulder, right leg, and knee joint of his left leg. He was
unable to feed himself, and was furloughed indefinitely. He was taken by his sister, Eugenia
Bate
BASS, to her plantation in Mississippi and she nursed him until he was well enough to return to
his regiment. He returned to his regiment 19 July 1864 and was discharged on disability.
In 1866, Humphrey entered the medical department of the University of Nashville (later renamed
Vanderbilt University) and graduated in 1868. After taking another course of lectures, he
commenced practicing medicine in Sumner County.
His first wife was Martha Anne FRANKLIN, who died two years after their marriage. They had
no children.
His second wife was Nancy Drucilla SIMPSON, born 29 Sep 1840 in Tipton County, Tennessee.
Her parents were William SIMPSON who died in 1840, and Nancy COOK, born 1804, died
1853.
Humphrey and Nancy were married 25 Nov 1873 and had four children:
