Allen, John and Daniel
Barber sons of Matthew came to Sumner Co., TN from Orange Co., NC. Matthew
Barber in all likelihood was the son of Allen Barber who owned land along Tom's
Creek off Jordan's Creek in Orange County. Allen Barber was a taxpayer in
Orange County as early as 1787. Online research shows Allen Barber among the
heirs of John Barber who died in Anson Co., NC in 1802. Matthew Barber first
appears in the records of Orange County when he married on the 27 Nov 1799 to
Christiana Atkins daughter of Daniel Atkins. Joseph Barber speaks of "my
brother" Matthew when he wrote his Will in Orange Co., NC in 1802. Matthew
and Christiana may have been the parents of ten children based on NC
census records. Matthew does not appear after 1830 in records for Orange
County. He would have been in his fifties and young enough to have migrated
with his family. To date no information has been found indicating a date or
place of death. Sometime after 1830 Allen, John and Daniel Barber leave North
Carolina. Christiana Elizabeth Barber had moved from Orange Co., NC to Sumner
County prior to 1830 with her husband Edmond Moye.
She may have been a sister to the Barber brothers. While some researchers place
her as their cousin (the daughter Betty in Joseph Barber's 1802 Will) no proof
has been found to support either claim.
1) Allen Barber was
born ca 1805 in Orange Co., NC and married to Malinda Vickers in same about
1830. He was living in District #17 Sumner Co., TN by 1838 with one child
attending school. In January 1850 the heirs of William Denning sued Allen
Barber in Sumner County over a land lease. Allen was seventy-five yrs
old September 1879 when he died of pneumonia. According to the 1880
mortality schedule he had been born in North Carolina as were both parents.
Malinda died in 1887 and to settle her estate a lawsuit was filed between
brothers "J. G. Barber vs. W. A. Barber". Allen Barber's land located
in District #13 sold for $154.00 on 16 March 1895 to Joseph G. Barber.
2) James Franklin
Barber was born 1832 in Orange Co., NC and married in Sumner County 24
April 1851 Mary Jane Kirby. They moved to Logan Co., KY before 1880 where
Mary died in 1883 and James died in 1890. According to 1895 lawsuit James
Barber had one living heir W. J. Barber.

Arilla E.

daughter of Young and Amy Woodall
Brizendine. He
served with the 7th Infantry of the Confederate Army and was wounded at Seven
Pines, VA in 1862. He was captured within Union lines 25 March 1863. The
details of his release are not known but he had returned no later
than Feb the following year evidenced by the birth of a
daughter born Nov 1864.
Arilla
died (date?) and John married December of 1867 his first cousin
Rebecca Ann daughter of John and Rebecca Reed Barber. He sued her for
divorce in 1869 stating that while living together they almost never co-
habitated for reason she was impotent, incapable of
procreation and still labors under the same disabilities. She had unnatural
structure in certain respects. John Barber served as a Deputy Sheriff in Sumner
County. In 1866, he was indicted and pled guilty to retailing. He died
in Sumner County ca 1875 and maybe buried in
Sulphura
Cemetery?

up and shot Daniel. Daniel asked for $500 for medical damages and an additional
