Jacob Hicks, and his two brothers, Henry Jack and William Cate were sons of Reuben Hicks (19 Jul 1800 - 12 Feb 1874), of the Dry Branch Community of Bluff City. Obtaining pensions for Confederate veterans or their widows was often a long and arduous process, mainly due to the veteran moving from unit to unit during his time in Confederate service, very few remaining with the same Regiment in which they enlisted at the beginning of their service to their completion of service. William Cate Hicks was listed as killed, so his family had to prove his death occurred after the war. Some interesting reading is in these papers and shows the difficulties families had to endure to receive the pension of a veteran.
The three brothers and their spouses were: Jacob Hicks (5 Apr 1842 - 18 Jan 1867) and Mary Jane Davis Hicks (19 Jul 1842 - 9 Apr 1925); Henry Jack Hicks (10 Nov 1836 - 24 Dec 1912) and Mary Jane Wassom (28 Aug 1838 - 24 Sep 1901) and William Cate Hicks (1845 - Oct 1915) and Josephine “Tiny” Meredith (m: 9 Jan 1871).
