John & Martin Booher

These records and reports were submitted by a Descendant of Martin and John Booher in hopes of dispelling a false assumption that Dr. John Bucher of PA. was the father of these men. We hope this information will be helpful in your research of this Family.

  1. Many people think their father was a Dr. John Bucher of PA. His will shows he had only three sons and he did not have a son named Martin.
  2. I have found the baptismal record of Martin Booher in PA in the Rev Casper Stover records. Also Baptismal Records of Martin's Children
  3. Statement of Elizabeth Booher Parrigan of Ky who was dau of John Booher of Sullivan Co. made when she was about 104 years old and my analysis of this staement which would be an aid to others seeking to find the Boohers in PA
  4. Will of a Peter Bougher of PA who has kids of the right age and names to have been the father of Martin and John Booher.
  5. Two pieces of correspondance from a church in PA where Martin Booher attended before he moved to TN
  6. Wife of Martin Booher: Her name is given as Catherina Hartman
  7. Will of Martin Booher
Martin Booher's Will was presented as evidence in a court case brought by the executors of the will to ask for relief from the court. Some of the children felt that the land was not worth what was asked for in the will or were unable to pay. I tend to think the execuators agree with them as they are not bringing suit against them but are asking to for relief or how to get out of this dilema so they can close the estate.
  8. As with any family research there is always room for errors and omissions. One can never be 100% sure! If you wish to continue this research in PA the following information is provided

John Booher, Elizabeth Booher Parrigan

Elizabeth Booher Parrigan, daughter of John Booher and niece of Martin Booher is the nearest living relative from which we have a statement about the Booher Family. She gave this statement when she was 104 years old and died when she was 105 years old. Her report on the family was given during an interview taken by her nephew, Benjamin Booher in 1901 at the home of her grandson in Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky. It was reported by Benjamin F. to the family reunion in 1902 at Darlington, Indiana. She reported that:

"My name is Elizabeth Parrigan and I was the youngest Daughter of John Booher. I was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee 11 Jan 1797, and if I live till my next birthday I will be one hundred and five years old. We moved to four miles of Bristol, Tennessee when I was nineteen years old from Washington County, Virginia, Abington being he county seat We moved to Clinton Coutny Ky , one mile form where we now live 17 Oct 1858. I was married on 10 Aug, 1821, at the age of 24 in Washington County, Virginia, to Henry Parrigan....................................

My father John Booher was of German Parentage. My Grandfather came form Germany to Pennsylvania but my father and mother were born in this country.

My grandparents died when I was a child and my father went back to get his legacy when I was about 10 years old. Martin was my father's brother. My Father had 10 children, eight sons and two daughters. They were Jacob, Mary "Polly", William, Benjamin, Jehu (died in infancy), John, Frederick, Twins Isaac and Henry and Elizabeth."

From this report we can conclude these facts.

Subject: Martinus Bucher

Earlier this year you indicated on the Bucher Forum that a 1794 will of Peter Bucher of East Hanover Twp, Dauphin Co, Pa listed his children and that you descend from Martinus and John and would like to receive info about possible links to them. I would like to see the will to which you refer to determine if that Peter was born in Germany in 1715 and is the son of Balgas Bucher.

While searching for the info I am seeking I found a copy of a letter from

Victor A. Young
************
Red Lion, PA 17356

to
Ned P. Booher of Kokomo,IN

which says;

"Peter Bucher of Hanover Twp. was the father of my Martin Bucher, b.1746 who appears to have traveled back to the area of Warwick Twp. In January 1774, Martin Bucher s/o Peter Bucher of Hanover Twp. married Catharina Hartman d/o Christian Hartman of Manheim Twp. (see Trinity Lutheran marriage records) Tax records indicate that Martin and Catharina Bucher resided in Hempfield Twp. for a few years following their marriage; Tax Lists of Hempfield Twp. Lancaster Co. list Martin Bucher for 1775, 1776, 1779, and 1781. During this time there is record of the birth of 5 children:

Christian b.14 Oct 1774, Trin Luth, Lancaster; and the following bapt. at Zion Luth Church, Manheim Twp.

Martin Jr. b.5 Dec 1775

Maria b.20 Apr 1777

Johannes b.23 Mar 1779

Peter b.14 Oct 1780

Note: These dates affirmed by records below.)

My Martin seems to have disappeared from Lancaster Co shortly after 1781. He may have returned to the area of his birth because there is a Martin and other Buchers in the 1790 census of Dauphin Co."

Hope this info is of some interest to you. Sincerely, Bob Bugher
NOTE:The birth date for Peter Bougher of 1715 and his father being Balgas Bucher have not been confirmed. That research is left to others. This information show that researchers in other states have come the same conclusion on this family.
