{"id":1421,"date":"2012-05-09T21:56:30","date_gmt":"2012-05-10T02:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/sullivan2\/?p=1421"},"modified":"2012-05-09T21:56:30","modified_gmt":"2012-05-10T02:56:30","slug":"morrison-and-goads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/sullivan\/morrison-and-goads\/","title":{"rendered":"Morrison and Goads"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Morrisons and Goads in Sullivan County, Tennessee ca 1790<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">All information is submitted by Kenneth Haas who adds; \u201cI do not vouch for all of the below I have deeds and other records for the Goad but most Morrison data is from the internet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>John GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0was born 1729 in Richmond County, Virginia. He was a a brother to\u00a0<strong>Joannah (GOAD) Sevier<\/strong>, mother of Gen\/Gov\u00a0<strong>John SEVIER<\/strong>. He and several of his brothers\/cousins\/uncle took the oath in 1777 Pittsylvania County, VA as did\u00a0<strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>. John&#8217;s oldest son William married\u00a0<strong>Betsy (Elizabeth) MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0in Pittsylvania. William then joined his first cousin, John Sevier, in the State of Franklin area. His pension application in 1832 Hawkins County asserted he had fought at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/revwar\/kingsmountain.html\">King&#8217;s Mountain<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Father\u00a0<strong>John<\/strong>\u00a0took his most of his family to that area in 1782 and they settled on Bay&#8217;s Mountain near today&#8217;s Kingsport. It is a beautiful nature preserve today. The GOADs built an entire &#8220;mountain village&#8221; there complete with a school and church.\u00a0<strong>John<\/strong>\u00a0died ca 1793 and his wife Margaret probably ca 1802. All the sons except\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0left in ca 1803, going to Hopkins County, Kentucky except\u00a0<strong>Gabriel<\/strong>\u00a0who went to Lincoln\/Casey County, KY, then Perry\/Crawford County, IN;\u00a0<strong>John, Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0to Posey County, IN after Hopkins;\u00a0<strong>Lewis<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Peter<\/strong>\u00a0stayed in western Kentucky. William received a 640 acre grant from the State of North Carolina for his military service, bought up more land later so had no reason to leave East Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I do not think the William in 1766 Rowan could have been this William as he was only about age thirteen then (born ca 1753). There were several\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>s by then. Old\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0in ca late 1830s re-married to Mary HALL, age 21, and fathered two sons\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Peter<\/strong>. Most GOADs in the Sullivan\/Washington\/Hawkins area today descend from this\u00a0<strong>Peter GOAD<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0is often rendered \u201cGOARD\u201d or \u201cGOURD\u201d and one Kings Mountain history has\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0as \u201cGOOD\u201d. Many census indices have\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>s under \u201cGOOD\u201d. My\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>s mother said the people in the Blue Ridge of Virginia often called it \u201cGOURD\u201d even into the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A number of Pittsylvania families moved to Sullivan by 1790. Bryant Ward Nowlin, Vaxchal Dillingham, John Dalton, Abel Morgan, Stephen Bennett come to mind. Some had a\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The first William above had a son\u00a0<strong>Reuben GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0who did not go to East Tennessee but to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/smith\/\">Smith County, TN<\/a>\u00a0ca 1803. Among his descendants was Gov.\u00a0<strong>Frank GOAD Clement<\/strong>\u00a0of the 1960s and his son Congressman\u00a0<strong>Robert Clement<\/strong>\u00a0of recent years. A descendant of John, Jr. of Posey County, IN was\u00a0<strong>Louis GOAD<\/strong>, vice pres. of General Motors in the 1940s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I wrote a book on all branches of the\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0family. My mother was a\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0born in Carroll County, Virginia. Our ancestor,\u00a0<strong>Robert<\/strong>, was first cousin to the first\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This listing of\u00a0<strong>William &#8220;GOOD&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.combs-families.org\/combs\/records\/tn\/sull12.htm\">1812 Tax List of Capt. Everitt&#8217;s Company<\/a>\u00a0was almost certanly\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>, the Kings Mt veteran and first cousin of Gov. John Sevier.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Patrick Morrison and Goad Family Connections<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Under discussion. Claim there Were TWO\u00a0<strong>Patrick MORRISONS<\/strong>\u00a0with Rowan County one confused with Pittsylvania one ???<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0died Wilson County, TN in 1810, wife Ann in 1838. He was a son of\u00a0<strong>William and Margaret Morrison<\/strong>\u00a0who lived in Rowan County, North Carolina. (now Iredell).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Son\u00a0<strong>James MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born 1758 (by first wife) married Mary BARNARD, daughter of John and Anna (CARR) Barnard, father of John was Francis.\u00a0<strong>James MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0lived in the Kingsport, TN area as did<strong>GOAD<\/strong>s.\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>\u2019s parents and most siblings joined\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0in East Tennessee (then North Carolina) in 1782. They lived on Bays Mountain. BARNARDs married\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>-related Daltons in Hawkins County, TN for decades after 1800.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>William MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born 1778 North Carolina, died in Alabama, buried in Clay County married Elizabeth SNIDER, says father\u00a0<strong>James MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born 1738. How related ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0had four sons &#8211;\u00a0<strong>James MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born 1758 and\u00a0<strong>David MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born 1743, who (each) married BARNARD sisters.\u00a0<strong>James MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/roane\/\">Roane County, TN<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>John MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>William MORRISON<\/strong>. Daughters were\u00a0<strong>Jinnett MORRISON<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Betsy (Margaret) MORRISON<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Betsy<\/strong>\u00a0married\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>, Kings Mountain veteran from Pittsylvania Co, VA and Sullivan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/\">Hawkins Counties, TN<\/a>. He was born ca 1753, first cousin to Gen. John SEVIER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">One source says\u00a0<strong>William MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born Rowan 1757 was the eldest son. Conflicts with the above.\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0went to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/wilson\/\">Wilson County, TN<\/a>\u00a0ca 1780. Had children\u00a0<strong>Daniel MORRISON<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Margaret MORRISON [REASONS]<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Charity MORRISON [JONES]<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mary PARR<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0born Tuckahoe, Scotland 1719, came to America with brother\u00a0<strong>James MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0and cousin\u00a0<strong>George MORRISON<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>, married (1) Elizabeth SMITH who died in Greene County, TN (2) Ann FOSTER. They earlier lived in Sumner County.\u00a0<strong>George MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0was killed at Kings Mountain.\u00a0<strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0enlisted in Rowan in 1778 and was a captain in the 1st Rowan regiment. This seemingly conflicts with him (or another Patrick MORRISON?) taking the oath in Pittsylvania in 1777.\u00a0<strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0married Ann FOSTER 9 Aug 1768 in Rowan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">On 4 Aug 1776,\u00a0<strong>Patrick MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0bought land from John COCK in Pittsylvania, witnessed by\u00a0<strong>Thomas GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>John GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0and Abel MORGAN.\u00a0<strong>John GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0was the father of\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0who married\u00a0<strong>Betsy MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Thomas GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>\u00b4s older brother. John COCK married\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth GOAD<\/strong>, sister to\u00a0<strong>John GOAD<\/strong>. Abel MORGAN too, went to East Tennessee and lived among the\u00a0<strong>GOAD<\/strong>s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When\u00a0<strong>John GOAD, Sr<\/strong>, father of\u00a0<strong>John GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0above, left a will in 1771 Bedford County, VA, he left his rifle to young James WALDROP (many spellings).\u00a0<strong>James GOAD<\/strong>\u00a0later married<strong>Margaret MORRISON<\/strong>\u00a0and was an ensign in the company of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/revwar\/counties\/sullivan1788.html\">Capt. Thomas VINCENT<\/a>\u00a0in 1788 Sullivan County, TN. In that same company were the following. ????<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In 1787, the inhabitants of \u201cthe western country\u201d (State of Franklin) sent a petition to the governor of North Carolina. Signing were\u00a0<strong>Patrick, William, John and James MORRISON<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Patrick<\/strong>\u00a0listed next to Thomas VINCENT, Abel MORGAN and Benjamin HENSLEE (HENSLEY), all from Pittsylvania. A bit further were listed Easleys, Lights, Shipleys, all connected somewhat to the GOADS, and\u00a0<strong>William GOAD<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>John \u201cGOARD\u201d Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Gabriel \u201cGode\u201d<\/strong>, all sons of\u00a0<strong>John GOAD, Sr<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Patrick<\/strong>\u00a0was listed quite far from the three sons listed together. Joseph \u201cWALDRAP\u201d was another on the list.
