In his campaign against the Cherokees, Col. William Christian established his first camp here on October 1-4, 1776. The Double Springs Church, to the south, was founded by 1786 by Jonathan Mulkey and pastored for 40 years by Jesse Riggs. Nearby lived John Jones, one of the commissioners of the Watauga Association.” Tennessee Historical Commission marker #1A-97.

Additional historical information

Several large springs in the area have been called Double Springs since before 1788. The area served as a mustering ground for soldiers during the Revolutionary War and the War Between the States.

The first known settler to the area is Captain Henry Clark, who settled here around 1776, obtaining a land grant for 300 acres. He sold 97 acres of land including the Double Springs and the mustering grounds to John Howser in 1788. Clark also had a grant for land, which included the “Long Island Path,” between Long Island and Double Springs. Colonel William Christian’s army consisting of 2000 men used this path during the Cherokee Campaign in October of 1776, stopping at the springs for water. Here, a company of men from the Watauga Settlement joined them and they proceeded to the Cherokee towns. The cemetery has been in use since the 1780s.

Early pastors of the church include Jonathan Mulkey, Richard Murrell, and Jesse Riggs.

BACON, Lillie M 6 Feb 1879 27 Feb 1928 Mother

BARNES, Salley Cox 1877 1940

BARRETT, Bobbie 21 Aug 1943 10 Jul 1999 [Funeral home marker bears the name, “Barbara B.”] [Same stone as James “JJ” Barrett]

BARRETT, James “JJ” 7 Feb 1942 [No date] [Same stone as Bobbie Barrett]

BARRON, Will 1878 1966

BASKETTE, Anna V. 16 Apr 1912 17 Aug 1989 [Same stone as Roy H.
