The
“William Williams Letters (1814 – 1855)”, published as Some Letters from Dover, Tennessee, 1814 to 1855, were edited by
Chase C. Mooney and published in the Tennessee
Historical Quarterly in 1949 and 1950 (Vol. 8 No. 2, Vol. 8 No. 3, Vol. 8
No. 4, Vol. 9 No. 1 and Vol. 9 No. 2).
The
collection contains transcriptions of 148 letters written primarily by Dover
resident William Williams (1794-1847) to his brother Samuel Williams, who lived
in Ohio, as well as by Edward Tiffin Williams, also a Dover resident and Samuel’s
son. William Williams was, at various
times, County and Circuit Court Clerk, a merchant, wool carder, State
legislator, iron producer and farmer.
These letters are the “Tennessee” items within the much-larger Samuel
Williams Collection, held at Indiana University.
The
letters were diligently footnoted by Mr. Mooney, providing an excellent
identification of most of the people mentioned in the correspondence.
An
index was not created with the original publications in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly. Name, place and subject indexes are provided
below. Bolded entries denote the volume
and number (8-2, 8-3, 8-4, 9-1 and 9-2) of the issue in which the indexed item
appears.
The
referenced issues of the Tennessee
Historical Quarterly are viewable online in the JSTOR archive at http://www.jstor.org.
