This
is to certify that I, William Curl, Sheriff
of Stewart County, in pursuance of an act of the General Assembly passed at
Knoxville on the seventh day of November 1803, have proceeded to hold an
election at the house of George Martin’s,
the place of holding Court in the County aforesaid, on the first Thursday and
Friday in June 1804, for field officers, at which time and place was duly and
legally elected Thomas Clinton,
Colonel, Joshua Williams, First
Major and Starling May, Second
Major.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal,

The certificate states that William Williams has been elected
Ensign, and as there is no such officer of Cavalry as Ensign, the commission
for Williams has not been issued.

Agreeable
to a writ of election to me directed from the Col. commanding the 26th Regiment
of the aforesaid state's militia, I have this 6th of April 1816 held an
election under the inspection of Nathan
Thomas, John Kizer and James Tagert, freeholders in the County
aforesaid, for the purpose of electing an Ensign in Capt. William James's company in the County aforesaid, in which election John Kelly and John Pearce are candidates, and said Pearce is elected, having a
majority of sixteen votes.

obedience to a writ of election directed to me from the Brigadier General of
the sixth Brigade of Tennessee Militia, I have held an election at the
courthouse in the town of Dover on the sixteenth and seventeenth days of
January 1817, for the purpose of electing a first Major for the 26th Regiment,
and I do hereby certify that William
King was duly elected first Major by a large majority.
