"This is a photo of Theodore Baxter Hayes and Clara Alice Trump Hayes with 8 of their children. The girl standing behind Clara is Eugene Pearl Hayes (my great-grandmother), born March 6, 1880. The girl in Clara's lap has to be Addie Arminta Hayes, born March 17, 1899. Theodore died May 28, 1910, in Montgomery County. Judging from Minta's size, I think the photo was made about 1901." -Sandra Ellis
"This is a photo of Clara Alice Trump Hayes. According to her daughter Bertie Lee Hayes Wilyard, Clara Alice was born 2 Aug 1859 in Canton, Ohio, and died 7 Mar 1930 in Clarksville, TN. She married Theodore Baxter Hayes in Hopkinsville, KY in 1876. She was the daughter of Isaac and Hester Ritzel Trump. "Aunt Bert" also listed several family members including Hester's sisters. Among these sisters, she named Mattie Ritzel.
In May, 1985, I spoke with daughter Addie Arminta Hayes. She said Clara Alice spoke of coming to Tennesse by riverboat as a child. Cornbread was served on the riverboat and Clara Alice thought it was some kind of cake and expected something sweet. She did not like her first taste on cornbread. "Aunt Minta" also remembered that Clara Alice's mother had been widowed several times. She remembered the names "Martin" and "Swagle" and thought these might be names of men Hester had married.
The 1870 Stewart County, TN census, Dist. 1 page 5, Cumberland City P.O., family 45 shows the family of Mary (Bartee) Hayes. This includes her son Theodore, age 20. Page 9 of the same census district shows family 69. This is the family of Benjamin and Hester Swagger. Included in this household are C.A. Trump, (F) age 10; Michael Trump, age 7; Mattie Ratsill, age 22; Hattie Messer, age 3. (Mattie appears to be one of Hester's sisters mentioned by "Aunt Bert". The census indicates that she was also born in Ohio.)" -Sandy Ellis
Parents of Clara Alice Trump Hayes
This is Isaac and Hester Ritzel Trump. According to their granddaughter Bertie Lee Hayes Wilyard, Isaac went to the civil war 4 July 1860 and died 4 Jan 1861. She said "he was on his way home and drowned in the Potomic River". They are the parents of Clara Alice Trump Hayes. -Sandy Ellis
